so there is this dude over on facebook named Mike Tiscareno who made this awesome sheet with hundreds of little character thumbs on it, and said that anyone who wants to, feel free to work them up to a more finished level! a very cool idea indeed!! so i grabbed a few of my favorites, and picked one to work up...

I agree with the comment that your character are a little stiff, bring up those poses, I really like those last silhouettes

Looking good Nicky. Couple of things I'd recommend though.. to try bigger brushes to begin with since there's a lot of little licky marks in some of the bigger areas. Also, For the characters (or anything really) there's sometimes way too much detail. You'd be amazed at how much better things look just for cutting stuff out where it's not important! Oh and try to lead the eye with your shapes to the face or wherever.. sounds like an obvious thing to say but it makes a ton of difference. Keep it up man!

Adam@Lyme - thanks man, its funny that i have gotten loads of positive vibes about that study, but i really dont like it at all, i was trying out something new by zooming way out the whole time, so seeing it bigger makes it look like complete crap. you gotta squint ha.

M.Calza - yea i just did it again as you will see below haha. damn. i do it all the time, even after i did these loose warm ups i still got the stiffest figure ever. i think its because i always go back over the same stroke until its just a straight line.

Veshkau - thank you man, its tough repeating the same mistakes over and over, i have so many to constantly think about, but i honestly really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. i do try to stick to going from big to small brushes as the painting goes along, but my mind wanders so much that i will jump back and forth to refine, but i always skip out on the smoothing process. getting all of the shapes to line up. the characters is my biggest problem right now. im like a hoarder when it comes to designing my characters, especially anything like soldiers, holy shit if i was designing for film the poor actors having to wear that gear would murder me haha, but i do need a lot of training in that department. i think ill try doing some fashion studies, some minimalist things for a change. big thanks again man!!

    -----------------------

some sketches from work, i did some loose warm up sketches, but once i started in on this character design thing i fell right back into old habits, shit lines on top of shittier lines with erasing, then some more lines in order to get my lines in. (and that was the gesture) . . . time to loosen the fuck up!

Really cool stuff you have here i like your defined style. One piece ill say is try more dynamic posing with your characters, really think about what theyre doing/who they are/what personality they have before you pose them and once thats done make the pose yourself and see how it feels. Use a gesture line that shows the movement of the action and exaggerate that movement along the line. Just my two cents keep it up!

Thumbs up for Roland, brosef! I totally recommend you to give the original book a read!
While I really like your traditional comic thingies, I'd recommend you to play with percentage of Flow in PS,
that could help you avoid the "messiness".

P.S I have no idea how did I end up commenting on stuff that is on first page after going to the last one.

I love the energy in your brushwork! It makes even your more static images look really lively. Reminds me a bit of Ben Templesmith, but...better, honestly. Kickass stuff here for sure.

Only thing I'd suggest is try varying not just your characters' poses but also angles--a few from the side, the back, above, a dutch angle or two couldn't hurt--this would probably push the awesome energy of your work even further. Good luck! One day I hope to be half as prolific as you.

Nice character, reminds me of Kano from mortal kombat. Would like to see the tattoos come back in. And keep pushing that face, looking really good.

Dude, one bit of criticism, and don't take this the wrong way because I tell myself the same thing pretty much constantly - stop doodling, start drawing.

If you are anything like me then when you pick up a pencil and have a blank sheet of paper, it's easy to start just noodling away at the usual stuff you have been drawing for years, and in the same style. Its a habit, and occasionally you might get something cool come out of it, but at the end of the day, you'll rarely learn anything form it until you break out of that and start really trying something different.

Sorry if that seems harsh mate, but every time you draw you should be a little better than the time before, and that's hard going if you always end up drawing the same sort of thing.

Edit: All that said, really like the rendering on that last dude!

palladium - thanks man! yea i really need to finish this guy, its just that school work is totally controlling my schedule at the moment...

Inkthyosaur - thanks for the crit, and im not blowing it off at all, in fact your very right, its just that this sketchbook is not just something to show my improvement, and steady concentration. its also a place for me to get my mind right again when im feeling crappy. usually when i have no free time, which nowadays is always, i will just do lots of loose scribbles and doodles just to keep drawing without the pressure of staying consistent with the things i have been posting. so thats why i will do lots of really loose crap in between my real studies and paintings. thanks for the words though!

Lightship69 - thanks man! really appreciate it!!

    ----------------

nothing really to update, just some random doodles to take my mind off things. i have tons of stuff to do for classes, so these loose scribbles keep me sane...
