Hiya! My name is Ariel, I'm 17, italian, and I've been trying to teach myself how to draw, with the goal of doing it professionally one day or another, for about five-six years.

I finally got up the courage to post a sketchbook of my own here, after lurking endlessly around everyone else's.
This forum is amazing, it inspires me each day and I've learned so much from it and all of you people, just lurking, that I just couldn't help but joining you in hope of learning even more. Can never get enough, right?

I'll start off with my latest Moleskine Pages and watercolors from my last vacation (in the second post).
I'll try to update daily, so I won't get too lost in the sea of other awesome sketchbooks. Crits are of course much appreciated!

Watercolors ahead! The not-people one (eh, can't help it, human figures are just so much fun) are inspired by Lucy Willis' Traveling with Watercolors.

Some digital work today! A couple of close-ups for an illustration I can't fully show (it was a commission), a vector - just for the hell of it -, and a WIP. Yes, I'm guilty of being captivated by that deviantArt trend that hit a couple of weeks - pick a Disney coloring book page, re-colour it using a Master painting as inspiration/palette. I'm using Water Serpents II by Klimt - maybe not a Master, but I love him so.

some really cool stuff going on in post #2. You mentioned color in my SB.. you may already have but you should check out Winslow homer and another off the top of my head.. the great Sargent.

I did loads of master studies from them to learn color. The impressionists in general.

Starting a sketchbook on ConcpetArt is always a really good thing, so keep it updated, and make a lot of excercises If you have time enough try to partecipate some group activity or contest or design of the week or things so, and you'll improve a lot (more then simply art academy stuff, still quite usefull I think)

Thank you both! Anjinn, I'll try - I must admit I'm intimidated by contests, but challenges should be a good way to start without feeling in competition with other people who are infinitely better than I am.

Kenny Calicutt, I was already a Sargent fan, but didn't know Winslow - his watercolors are very inspiring! Watercolors are kind of my favourite medium, people may have noticed that, ehe.
Anyways, I took one hour out of my schedule today to do this small Sargent master copy in Paint Tool Sai (I should probably get Painter, there's even a brush named after the artist himself!)

Thank you! Yes, they are - except for the dancers, they're from contact sheets of a dance school's end of the year show's photoshoot.

I like your pen sketches too. I like the flow in the shapes in some of them, and it's great You do these from life. I hardly ever do that myself. Pay closer attention to the proportions though, maybe it's just me, but it seems you tend to draw the heads a bit big sometimes.
I like the watercolors and the Sargent study.

Gildorek, thank you, and you're right! I should get out of my comfort zone and do some more real proportions studies, I got my hands on some Loomis study material that I will use in the following days, for sure. And oh, I love drawing from life, there's nothing like it!

Frank, thank you! I love the constant challenge with watercolors - graphite is reliable and easy, but can get boring sometimes. (Also, I'm really quite honoured you're gonna drop by again!)

I'm sorry to have missed the update yesterday, but every now and then Real Schoolwork calls, and Math is somewhat unavoidable until I graduate High School, ehe.
Some more Moleskine sketches, a bit older (from London and of a friend's dogs and bunny!) plus some life drawings I've posted in the Fine Art section as well. Hope that doesn't break any rules!
I'll probably post later with whatever I'll work on today! I've been trying some digital posemaniacs sketches but I'm real rusty with digital linearts, so nothing worth showing yet.

As a matter of fact, I do have fun sketching, ehe.
Speaking of which - my sketching progress for 'serious business' (sort of, ehe) work. Pencil sketching, digital correction after a chat with the client, better pencil sketch + digital coloring mock up. This'll be a watercolor A4 and I will work on it in the next few days, just before school actually starts.

Plus, a silly doodle I did last night in half an hour in Paint Tool Sai (boy I'm loving it) & Photoshop to practice negative drawing, with reference. I think that's Dita Von Teese, maybe? Mhm.

I really like that watercolor piece you're working on. Make sure You show us the final version if You're allowed watch his hand, though, it looks short.
Also, nice figure drawing from the previous post, I'd love to see more of such studies.

Do you mean the hand of the suit guy, or the wifebeater guy?
And yes, expect lots of those pen figure drawings as soon as I get in class. They're basically what I do instead of listening, some of the other classmates know it and sometimes they do me the favour to stay still, ah!

Yesterday I've done a couple of silly brush studies in Paintool Sai to get confident with the program, and also to soothe my terrible stomache which is thankfully gone, so I'll be able to do something serious today and finish the lineart for the watercolor commission, on the good shiny expensive paper. I really want to sit down and do some values studies today, because I *suck* at values, damn me.

Plus, there's a sketch of my sister in a style that's not usually my thing, but it was to get a job (which I did get, yay! You don't even wanna know what I need all this money for, ehe xD)

Sorry for missing so many updates guys, you have no idea how many times I've re-drawn the lineart of that commission - I've actually had to trace it on another page because I'd worked the paper too much. But I think the final result is pretty cool.
I've also done a tonal study, finished my Moleskine and started a new sketchbook (not Moleskine D: I have SUCH a fetish, but no money to indulge it) that I WILL scan by tomorrow, dammit. In the meantime, have crappy pictures of everything but the new sketchbook, because the page is only half-done and I hate showing half-done pages, the mess lacks the sort of composition that comes to be when all the little people and poses crammed together fill a page in every possible way.

I am also reposting the Moleskine pages in the first post, because I'm dumb and didn't realize they would show up as thumbnails - putting a cooler thumbnail up, yep.
