IllustStudio new art program, Photoshop, Opencanvas, SAI... all in one!

The guys behind MangaStudio thought about us and made this amazing software called IllustStudio, at the time being it's only available to Japan but I imagine like ComicStudio it will be available in English soon.

Watch the demos on youtube and be amazed! It even has a 3D engine for helping with layouts, granted it's very manga orientated but hopefully we can change the 3D models to more realistic figures and a brush is a brush, they even took SAI's inking layer to an whole other level, a software to keep an eye on.

Yes very true I hadn't thought about it that way, still it's nice to have the options and there are so many new ideas here that it's hard to imagine it's the debut version.

One section in the 2nd video appeared to be talking about the option to make individual layers either a "vector layer" or "raster layer." The vector layers were then able to be manipulated by some special tool-- the part where you saw a green highlight on a line and then the line getting thicker or thinner.

If this program really does have options like that (letting lineart be a vector image with bitmap color layers underneath) and all the other stuff, AND it's selling for only $70... I can see it being a major competitor with Photoshop among artists. Much easier to buy a copy of this program than buy the $700 PS. I don't think Adobe would like the competition, though they might appreciate the drop in piracy rates for PS.

Definitely going to try to translate this over the weekend, I think.

I'm wondering though Manga Studio had 2 different price ranges. The lower one didn't have features certain features like Debut was about 40 and the higher end one was about 300. I'm not saying that's bad by the way it would still be worth it at the higher range.

Just wondering if that will happen here since MangaStudio had the perspective and Concentric circles option in the Pro version.

IllustStudio does look pretty cool. They make it seem like the selection tools are exceptionally easy and quick, doing a lot of the work for you. Which would be nice since selecting areas and setting up layers takes up probably half of my time when I'm digitally painting over some scanned work.

That lil' trick with the fill bucket rocked my socks though. I hate when my line work has that one nearly indiscernible break and the entire background gets filled in. It's not really a big deal and it is pretty easy to fix or work around, but it is one of those little annoyances that irks me every time it happens.

Overall pretty cool, although if it becomes popular I fear some of those gimmick brushes *coughleafbrushcough* might become the new lens flare.

You can use google to translate the site somewhat, but a lot of the stuff is text in pictures. Also you can expand the videos on the site to full screen to see it better.

They aren't actual real vectors, it's like an emulation.

btw i think thats the only thing (vector like lines) other than the mirror and draw around a pivot that potoshop doesn't have from what i saw.

Illustudio's vector feature is geared towards drawing with lines and inking. It lacks many advanced vector tools of Illustrator, those of which are generally not used for drawing/inking, so you're not gonna see graphic designers abandoning Illustrator or Photoshop for that matter, anytime soon.

Bigger problem is if you don't have your computer set to japanese text (kanji?), it nerfs the characters and you can't install. One file has a | in it and when its converted it breaks the file structure.

won't setting the computer's langage to japanese do something to our other programs? Can we set it back to english once we've installed the patch?

Setting the region setting for non-unicode programs to Japanese will only result in non-unicode programs using the SHIFT_JIS encoding for text, instead of your normal local encoding. You'll for example notice the backslash appearing as a yen character in applications that aren't unicode aware. This is only a visual difference, and does not have any influence on the actual working of the application, unless it somehow needs characters that aren't available in the character set. Some speial characters in the texts will be broken if you set the region code back to English or whatever your region is, but it normally shouldn't be a problem.

Do I check the box next to "japanese" in the list that lets you check multiple langage or do I change the langage from french to japanese in the list where I can only pick one?


sorry for being so computer illeterate, going back and forth between english and french tends to blow my brains out...especially since french translation can sometimes be...wierd.

Been trying the painting brush, the blending is beyond amazing! So responsive, smooth, perfect would be the right word, it doesn't seem to have any texture options though. The color guide really puts Adobe to shame, it's inventive, ultra useful and works a treat.

Found the brush textures, good for people who like them.

Has a real pressure and slope curve, you can edit all point of the curve not just the center.

You can change the tip of the pen to a square point or to a polygon and change the shape of it.

Rulers like Sketchbook Pro.

Perspective rulers.

Auto-correct like SAI.

Levels and other color correction.

Will try more.
