    Tjena Gringos,

Seen some of this before, great to see it all here!

I used to work for Grin too a year ago but in the Barcelona-office so I unfortunately never had a chance to meet any of you guys except for old friend Tuchten ! (thats some wild robot-gun action right there! much love)

Best of luck with everything, go get them tigers! ; )

Now, don't misunderstand me: For a Tolkien or World of Warcraft inspired fantasy game (which is what I see here), the art is certainly up to par. But to me, it is nowhere as exaggerated or enough detailed as the last several Final Fantasy games (or their concept art) have been.

Again, this only makes this thread even more interesting. The Japanese first started out with copying the then masters of the genre, Wizardry and Ultima, for their Dragon Quest. And today, they have gained enough skill and evolved enough so that they themselves are the masters with Final Fantasy and such.

The only thing which comes close (in my book) is some recent Korean offerings, and also Guild Wars. But they still lack a certain something (grandure?) in order to surpass Final Fantasy.
Yeah, you do have a point. Japanese have managed to craft their own unique look nowadays.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, Marko especially.
Glad to hear even preproduction mockup work like mine can get appreciated in the current rendercrazy climate!

It's kind of sad the project never got a fair shot of being successful.. on the bright side, we are spared all the potential fan rage.

SamsonsReaper: Yeah, a few new studios/projects have sprung from the corpse of GRIN and some look really promising. Even though the swedish games industry has taken some punches lately there are some dark horses around that might flip the situation back fairly soon. Personally though, like most/all of the previous posters, I'm looking into going freelance. Hopefully this will unlock more time for studies and personal projects, something working fulltime has a tendency of instantly nuking.

these are all really really incredible...but the first image I like especially. The soft watercolor, simple media is attractive. And it's a bit Bob Rossy, I think...haha

I was wondering if any of the ex-GRIN artists could shed some light on this piece from Bionic Commando, in particular the design on the left.

Part of the design has quite a bit in common with the Kauz from Maschinen Krieger by Kow Yokoyama-san.

    Hey NeecHMonkeY,
I wasn't working on the project during the preproduction/prototype-stage, but I'll try to answer your question best I can. (Someone with better knowledge about it is free to correct any wrongs - Martin/Tony?) -

I'm not sure who exactly made that specific concept.. (might even be different people who made the colour and b/w version) - but it's most likely an early concept of one of the "Biomechs".

The reason you can see elements of Kow's Maschinen Krieger/SF3D-design is because it was one of the sources of inspiration for tech - more prominent early on in the project than later on. A lot of the people at Grin were (or became) fans of MK, and I figure someone with a say in the matter felt they wanted to see more of a clunky, "if Sovjet formed the future"-feel in the game. And what better place to look for inspiration than in Kow's work? Good eye!
