Hello Everyone,

Well, here's my first sketchbook. I'll try to update it regularly.

Recently, i just acquired myself a pen tablet, a basic Bamboo, and now learning how to paint digitally. But it appears i still have much to learn, I was trained as a graphic designer and currently working as one. But i realized, quite lately, that my true passion is in Illustration. It means I have much catching up to do. So, help me out guys.

EDIT 11/25/2010: Well it's over a year now since I have my Bamboo and I have been learning to paint digitally since. This sketchbook is a chronicle of my progress. Enjoy and please drop some crits and/or comments, I still need much to learn

Here's some fan-art sketches of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman.

1st attachment: It's Dream a.k.a The Lord Shaper. This is a cleaned scan, my sketchbooks are messy., i wish i have that architects hand . I finished it, I'll post it to my gallery soon. EDIT: i posted it, check this out
2nd attachments: It's Despair, Desire's twin sister. It's overdone I think. Too much hand-oil, paper scars, etc...

Here's another update.

Notes:
It's, again, overdone . I worked on this one for too long and eventually smeared it with hand-oil *ew!*. Anyone had any tips for the wet-handed? I already tried to cover my hand with a sheet of paper, it works but i often ended up feeling uncomfortable. Rubber gloves is a hell-no.

Critiques are encouraged. Help me get better

Notes:
1st attachment: some thumbs, trying to get some ideas and looks.
2nd attachment: i named this one Bob. first scarecrow pop out from my head.
3rd attachment: this one is Verne. 2nd scarecrow.
4th attachment: and Trent. The latest scarecrow with some skull and face studies. I stylized the drawing a bit in photoshop and added those alien inscription for no reason but fun

Here's an initial sketch i've done for this character, A Samurai Girl (i've not yet found her a decent name ), and a color blocks as a painting base. I wanted her to look like she's rising with rage from a fiery building rubble. I've posted this in "WIP and Study" forum, please drop by and tell me what you think

Hey man.
You got a cool style going on with some good ideas.
The value range in this one is pretty good. But some of your other pencil work looks a little flat. Try and push the value range a bit more with darker darks and lighter lights to add depth.

Thanks Josh! Yeah, I've been working on adding quick values to my sketches while keep being spontaneous at the same time. I have to do more study from the real-life objects. The drawing that you mention was done in, possibly, 3 weeks! I am a slow renderer, i have to work on that problem too.

Here's a scan of a sketch I'm planning to work on and a cleaned version for painting preparation , i think i'll paint this with Watercolor brushes in Painter. As you can see I also fixed the proportion in the cleaned version.

Latest stuffs i made. I haven't been too artistic lately, some kind of mental block or whatever. Anyway, here goes: the first one is for the DSG; and the other one is a colored version from my previous sketch, still in sketch quality, so i post it here.

Really cool stuff you got here, I'm surprised there aren't more comments cuz it's very good (especially the scarecrows).

Perhaps the reason your graphite sketches are so messy is that your lead is too soft? Maybe try a harder lead. I have the same problem, since my hand always rests on the paper and press too hard when I draw. But hey, there's always digital sketching as you've already discovered.

The only crit I can add is using more reference or do some anatomy studies for practice, which may help your accracy. Otherwise, you seem to be on the right path.

Keep posting and don't get discouraged... the best way to get visits and comments in your sketchbook is to visit and leave comments in other peoples sketchbooks.

to bad_painter: That is an encouraging words and your critic is very well accepted. Thank you . I agree i should have practice painting/drawing from life. I've been trying to do that, in stealth, if you know what i mean. I'm still caught in a non-conducive environment to practice my art (ah... yes, here i go again, making another excuse ). Anyway, thank you for taking time to comment. I really appreciate it, bad_painter... ... ... it feels kinda bad, you know, calling you by that name, really... especially just right after going through your SB and that is totally un-bad

I forgot to post this, this was done some months ago. I've been drawing various different stuffs since I started to draw again, and I found out that I'm really slow at drawing figure from imagination, so I decided to learn again from Loomis' book, Figure Drawing for All It's Worth, to refresh my memory. Well, here's the first:



It's somewhat harder to draw figure with a rigid guideline, now i remember, it's like playing an instrument along with metronome. It makes me nervous

Approx. 15-20 minutes for each figure and some extra for those card-boxes, for a compositional reason.

Continuing the animal studies, here's a cane-toad, with a frustrating warts on its skin.

Study #01
It supposed to be a rough quick sketch, but i got sucked in trying to draw those warts in hours of little success


Study #02
Still curious of those warts. Learning from first mistake, this time i try to focus at one aspect at a time, and draw those warts later on!
a) a quick line-work, as i usually do (approx. 10 minutes)


b) Further defining the line-work, suggesting depth and such (approx. an hour)


c) Laying in some basic smooth tones (approx. another 1 hour)


and a variation of the last one for i don't know what

Hope fails, no warts today. I was out doing some non-art academic stuffs today. But i managed to sketch a couple of things in the meanwhile.
Continuing on animal studies, here's another bandog done digitally in Painter IX.5 with a charcoal brush:


And a scooter sketch. I'm not really good at sketching un-organic stuffs, those perfect geometric shapes are making me nervous


In overall, i noticed my pencil sketches is better than my digitals, both in quality and speed. I'm curious if that always the case for everyone (?)

I'm really diggin the Ram Spider haha, it looks sweet. It looks like you are already off to a great start with illustration and digital painting; just keep up the practice and keep doing daily sketch group concepts, because I'd love to see more stuff from imagination for sure. More anatomy studies would be good too
