    Chow 170 :: Napoleonic Naval Hero - CHOW/EOW

ROUND #170:: Napoleonic Naval Hero - CHOW/EOW Cross Over!
    DESCRIPTION

    TWO WEEK CHOW

For the next two weeks we're running a cross over with EOW, featuring a brave naval hero in an epic sea battle.

You have three options with this contest:

    a) Do a more illustrative piece and combine chow & eow and meet the requirements for both contests in one image (a battle on a quarter deck, for example)

    b) do two illustrations seperately, one with a naval battle, and one just with the hero,

or c) only do one of the two - you don't really need to do both, but it'll be more fun!

For the EOW requirements, please follow this link: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=166423

    Now for the chow requirements:

    - Design a hero in the navy (english, french, spanish, american, whatever you wish, but ONLY navy, no pirates or privateers please) along the lines of Nelson, Hornblower, Aubrey, etc.

    - Napoleonic time period, but with some lee way (hah). Naomi Novak's "Temerraire" series, for example, is based in the time period but with dragons. Some very early steam punk or clockwork punk is also acceptable. You should be around 1800 to 1815.

    - Ladies are allowed, but keep to uniform convention, please, no random hot ladies wandering around, no one would know what to do with them. (Also, that was mostly the work of pirates.)

Some books and movies to help you get started:
"Master and Commander" (and the rest of the series, and the movie) by Patrick O'Brian.
the "Horatio Hornblower" book series (and BBC TV miniseries) by C.S. Forester.
"His Majesty's Dragon" (and the rest of the series) by Naomi Novak.
Any Biography on Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson, Captain Cook (though this is a little early, most of the stuff is the same) etc

there are tons of other book series and stuff based in this time period, so have fun!

Funny, I was watching an episode of Sharpe (with Sean Bean) last night - right time period, but on dry land.

I'm always amazed by the silly hats worn by the ground forces of that era.

Is it possible to do someone non-human? or could the enemies in the sea battle be non-human? could they be space aliens? could they be atlanteans? pirates? ghosts? does the sea battle have to be against another ship? could our heroes be fighting a whale or squid or cthulhu-esque super beast? could the battle take place in an imaginary place, like the tropical garden area at the north pole? (fits in well with the time period)

No. If I specified that Female heroes were okay but only in line with usual uniform, then why would non-humans be okay...?

As for the rest of the questions, those are better posed in EOW: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=166423

However, I think you're completely missing the spirit of the competition. :/ I guess you could have non-humans, but only if they were in one of the navies / working for one of the countries involved in the war, and even then I think you're missing the point...

Because dragons and steampunk are ok. Its cool though I asked so that I could know. So its more about people fighting people, both on military ships of opposing countries. Like historical fiction?

I love 'Sharpe'! Even the recent ones are OK, but remember Sharpe was in the 93rd Riflles which were infantry. The brief is specific to nautical. If you've seen Star Trek: Generations, the uniforms Picard and the crew wear when in the hologram chamber at the beginning are typical of the thing Daestwen is refering to.

I saw Nelson's night shirt not too long ago at Greenwich. It had one long sleeve and one short. Also, He was a TINY WEE FELLA! Can't have been that much over 5 feet.

What about an angelic navy? kept with the ships and outfits of the time period but made to look "holy" and maybe sailing a top the edge of a rolling storm front? Or battling a demonic presence a top a hurricane. whould that be acceptable?

It's allowed to just do one part, like only the character?

    Good.

Interesting theme, I think I'll have to do a heroine for this, we can't all do the same hero type sailor with the square jawline and determined expression.

A reluctant hero? Hmmm. Brainstorming time.

Yeah, it just struck me as a funny coincidence to watch a Napoleonic piece one evening and then see a Napoleonic CHOW in the morning

The Naval (and Marine) uniforms weren't nearly as silly looking, which is saying something considering the large fin the upper ranks put on their head!

I gottcha, I actually was thinking about a storm over the ocean. I posted without reading the other posts and I guess I missed the point as well. I think I might go back and rethink what I might try to do here. Thanks for responding though.

Great topic! Not sure whether i'll increase the size and include some more of the environment in it, but this is what i got so far after a some doodling tonight.

Im thinking that his ship is under attack and its nearly sunk, but the hero pushes his men forward to make their last stand! I'm thinking of add alot of parts from the ship flying about, waves crashing in, and the crew struggling to stay on the boat.

Here's my initial sketch. I'm not great with BG's, so I'll probably change it up before I'm through...but here we go.

hey, westoon - some very impressive progress, and I like how you are handling the whole environment. One thing, tho, is that the sail above his head looks more like a modern sailing vessel... these early 19th century ships tend to have a sail running perpendicular to the ship, not parallel (apart from the front small sails at the front of the ship)... they also sit up alot higher. I think you can still make that space interesting compositionally with some of the thousands of ropes the rope ladders that would run from the deck up to the masts:

Smaller ships often had the sails that you've got there, it's not modern, per say, just not regular on a ship big enough to have a quarter deck... In this case anything from about 20 guns (or a 6th Rate, usually referred to as a frigate). Sloops and other smaller vessels were often not square rigged (which is the rigging that jessi has up above there), but were not the prime suspect when it came to naval battles as they were just too small. Sloops and other small vessels were usually used for transport or for relaying messages - anything about a 6th rate would be square rigged and more likely used in a battle scenario.

(this isn't to say that sloops didn't fight in battles, more that you probably wouldn't want to intentionally, unless maybe you were fighting pirates or trying to take an unarmed - or underarmed - merchantman vessel and in that case a couple of canon balls would be more likely to end the conflict than swords)

okay that's it for my lecture...

Jessibean: thanks for the reference, and the suggestions...it was mainly compositional consideration, to put the mast in as it is, but ropes or, no doubt, countless other elements could fit the bill.
Daestwen: the lecture is appreciated. I love character work, and generally loathe BG's, hence the lack of historical detail, but I'd like to correct this in my work.

And in general, all the movie suggestions were good, but a classic was missed. Mutiny on the Bounty, starring a young Marlon Brando...great movie!
