p sage thanks a lot dude glad i haven't aroused any harsh crit with this one (yet) i've been wonderin the same thing about The Man With No Name, hope he gets back here soon

JailRockHouse feeling better now & trying to get more productive & thanks a lot dude

GweNdZ Thank you very much I'm excited about it too, though i've neglected that image the last couple days, time i continued working on it

erdbeefeldheld That's very encouraging it brings life drawing closer to the top of the "things to do list", weekend's here so i'll do something basic, maybe my mouse

seagulls It really does mess things up, especially when you're in the mood to draw but just can't, i hate that. but i'm better now & so it's time to get back into the rithym thanks dude, she really is pretty fearless eh it's in a city so it's a great fall, the idea is that she's basically being pulled/dragged somewhere by the fairy so that's why the forwards direction in the hair, i should try to get that with the clothes as well thanks a lot for the help man

i've finished one of the contest images i've been workin on it's a shame i can't post it here there's two left, for now i discovered an easier and more efficient way of painting hair so i went back to the "caught" image & re-did her hair (amongst other things) and also tried out some colour on it. i now regeret getting so excited colouring from greyscale i've spent a total of 15 hours on this image & about four hours have been spent trying to get colour into it which i a real pain. i'm thinking of renaming it, not sure what to though.

    last week's & the greyscale

nice love the hair a lot more now. I just don't like that coloring for now... if you just make an overlay, multiply soft light or whatever layer type above it and block in the main color, it will always look artificial. I love the color sheme though, so I would make an additional normal style layer on top and make it a bit more natural, like adding different hues and saturations, mainly to the skin.
But that's just my impression and thoughts.
So do what you like, dude!

Good to see you back in the saddle with updates

A little anatomy crit: The sternocleido mastoids don't quite come together so sharply at the bottom of the neck... there's a bit of a hollow between the two clavicle bones (commonly called the neck pit or pit of the neck) and each of those muscles actually connect to the clavicles not right at the center of the neck.... more in the center of each clavicle.

Hm... I dont think you should use colour for now. It's not so simple to actually colour an b/w. You've gotta work on it even after making that overlay thing.

nice update! i think the lines on her neck are too deep, and the bones a little bit too much on the right site. when you reduce the lines in the middle, she looks more feminin i think ^^

The hair is looking much better with that gradient. Its really hard to color the greyscale isn't it. I have a fair bit of trouble too. Maybe too saturated but I'm just guessing.

Arestocrat i feel the same about the colours, i will have to fix them on a normal layer but i've done so many experiments on this which kinda makes it feel like a waste of time, oh well i'll just revisit it another time, thanks dude

Incinerated Thanks dude colour studies are definately in the pipeline

p sage thanks so much for the info Senor

Creusa thank you it is quite annoying colouring form b&w, feels like extra work.

Hanny Honeymoon you're right, her neck muscle's are leaning to the right the right, thank you so much

seagulls thanks dude greyscale to colour really is a piss-off right now but i guess it's just part of the learning process. boy that wacom really would be fantastic i need to take this thing more seriously, the deadline's looming & i haven't done much this weekend

latigid chingola's a couple kilometres outside lusaka, so you & i were once neighbours zambia's a great place to visit but living here's another story, so here's hoping i get whisked away as well thanks a lot dude

    towy thanks dude

jailHouseRock thanks dude b&w's cool for learning values but like you i think i'll stay away from it when doing finished pieces

did some work on the fairy image Fairy Friend

i also did a bit of studying this weekend starting with my first ever life study drew an old mouse, it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be, infact it felt the same as staring at a picture only i could look around it if i felt like the colours aren't exact but they're close to the real thing so i'm happy with it (too bad i don't have a photo). i'm trying out softer brushes again so it's a bit mushy, donno why i find it so hard to switch between soft & hard.

this was meant to be an hour long back study but i got carried away & painted the whole of her there's a lot of stuff i do in the begining which causes problems later on so i thought i'd post before rendering, also i didn't draw any lineart cause i tend to spend hours fixing those, crit please

Life drawing is looking nice mate,
mouse is probably a good thing to start with, I see you don't have that foreshortening problem I have when drawing from life.
The snake charmer paint is really good , the pose is a bit more straight that the ref picture but has the illusion of being correct anyway.
The fairy friend is good as well. The problem that may be bugging you is the fairy creates another light source and the scene is a little empty.

The life drawing is great but the colours seem a bit off ... Take your time with "seeing" and try to choose the colours as accurately as you can. Hatching and texturing might help to create a more realistic image. The "Fairy friend" pic looks nice so far, you should revise the lighting though ... It doesn't look like it's night. Use some photos to get an idea how moonlit figures should look!

Man, the rendering on that girl came out quite nicely but she still looks and feels flat. Study more from life and you will begin to better understand the interplay between lights and darks. Check that shadow under her neck, looks like an outline. Despite a good job rendering it, her hair looks like a flat image that has been pasted on her head. Also check the neck, some of the anatomical parts are too pronounced. Necks are way tricky; we know that there's a lot going on underneath the skin but in a lot of people those details barely show through.

Really dig the mouse study. Keep em coming buddy!

Very precise life drawing there. And you know why? It's not because you saw it right; it's because you understand what it is AND because you saw it right.

I think both things have to come together to make a convincing drawing. That's why drawing figures is so hard.

But this is a good step for you.

edbeerfield (erdbeerfeldheld) is probably right about the colors (I wouldn't know)... but otherwise, spit spot on this one. Nice job.

You have quite some nice, varied studies!!
I certainly like your speedy bridgman hands, and your other anatomy studies too. Do you do them digitally? I ask because they look very clean.

I also like the fact that you vary your other studies too, do landscapes a bit, do value studies, portraits, anatomy, and so on

    Really nice signature too.

seagulls Thank you very much mate i have a small confession to make on the snake charmer, when i finished painting in the values i realised it was leaning to the left, like REALLY leaning to the left so i transformed it to get her standing straight, which is the cause of the "illusion", & on the fairy friend you're right about both things, the good thing is that the primary light source is behind the fairy so it may end up looking she's the one lighting the place , unfortunately i couldn't think of anything else to add to the scene so it's looking kinda dull, awe well still learning

    laxon thank you very much

    Wakoes thanks a lot mate

erdbeerfeldheld thank you you're probably right about that, i haven't really tried hatching while doing a digital piece, i kinda feel like it might slow things down & i'm only just starting to try out textures & custom brushes so it might take a bit of time before i'm confortable enough to try those on life drawing, but it never hurts to try on the fairy image i figured it would be easier to paint the skin that way then use colour balance to get the appropriate effect

Mr. Smile VERY RIGHT thank you very much, with the girl i rarely paint them with square jaws so i wanted to try something i hadn't done before (hope it came out alright )

Peetaer Thanks a lot dude i really do need to make time for more life & value studies, and thanks a lot or the crits dude, it's really hard to get a three dimentional feel when painting & i think the image lost a lot of depth with the conversion from greyscale to colour. really need to work on those areas you mantioned

jatherip thank you dude you're right i really should try to loosen up bit

p sage THANK YOU SO MUCH DUDE i really did try & remember the stuff i've read on these forums while painting it which made it a bit easier to approach. i think painting simpler stuff like this REALLY will help a lot with more complex stuff like figures, now i need to get into the habit of doing them

BlackDelphin Thank you very much i do everything digitally (messed up my scanner & too lazy to take pictures). i've been scared to try landscapes, but i'll get to those sooner or later & i will definately do the rest of the stuff you mentioned & thanks again

johanson hey man, great to see you here dude & thank you very much

jailhouseRock2 Thank you very much dude & same goes for you & i'll definately do my best to keep going

towy hey man, thank you very much

incinerated thanks a lot dude i had some trouble with the mat, i just couldn't figure out a balance with the lighting so ended up leaving it that way. thanks for the crit

Haven't had the net for the past couple of days Anyways, I spent most of last week & the weekend working on the Fairy Friend image (which is finally finished) so not much in the way of updates here, just a bit of crap from imagination, a very unfinished study of an ornament (got bored, even though i liked where it was going), a couple old doodles (just to bulk up the update )

And finally something i started working on at the begining of the month for a photoshop contest, i ended up scrapping it & started another image so i thought i i'd post it as well

Oooh i so soo love that christmas ornament!!
I was thinking of doing something for this christmas too

Glad to see the wip on that drawing too, and you changed her design quite a bit on the way!! But it ended up nicely Have you considered drawing the windows for the entire background? I think it would look better, smoother.

I hope you'll internet will be better from now on so you won't have any excuses to update on us!

I really like that robot portrait you did

This portrait http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...ughtcolour.jpg is AWESOME! She looks so alive and she kind of reminds me of an actress on 'Days of our lives'

in this piece http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...lmostThere.jpg you could improve the shading around here face and neck to emphasize her face more, she can use a wider value range as well, her values are pretty much the same all over her face and upper body which rarely is the case in real life.
Also try to either add warm highlights to her or blur the background or just desaturate it to make the character stand out.
