    Red face My Magical Sketchbook!

Hey guys! I'm Alex, a 15 year old girl from a tiny island called Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. I'm currently still at school, but I'm taking Art as an O'level and will definitely try to pursue art as a career.

I try to draw whenever I'm able to, and have some finished pieces over at my deviantArt page if you'd like to check them out.

So this is my sketchbook. I'll start off with some sketches I did in pen on a squared copybook about 2 weeks ago. The last pic is actually done in pencil on a proper little sketchbook but the scan turned out very washed out and editing in GIMP didn't really help much. So advice on scanning pencil sketches would be appreciated! Thanks.

Would really, really, really, REALLY love some proper critique.

Nice start for a sketchbook! Now I cannot really offer proper critique since I am just starting at the basics, but I will try to offer something.

Browsing through your DA as well it seems hand studies are something to work on. Hands are tricky since there are so many muscles involved that give them their versatility, so practicing and learning how these muscles work together to form movements will help make yours more believable. Right now the hand you posted has a wrist that bends a bit unnaturally. Also perhaps try to accentuate the bump where the thumb comes out a little more. Even in a position like this, the transition between hand and wrist is somewhat wider and more noticeable. The palm should probably be wider. Maybe I would recommend looking at Bridgman's book Constructive Anatomy as one source for help on that.

The one study you did of your own hand was good. Try to do more of those (or find pictures/other people to help you); they will be very helpful. Maybe work a little more on face proportions as well since that third image looks like her lips are too low.

I hope those tidbits help. I tried to offer something. ^^; Sorry if they were picky, but I was trying to find things to critique. XD

I really like the way you rendered the hair on her though, it gives nice movement and texture. The part master copy and one from your imagination looks good as well. Keep posting and keep pushing, looking forward to seeing how you progress.

Thanks for the critique! I'll do some more hand studies. At the moment I'm working on male anatomy...I've got some sketches which I should be able to post up soon.

In the third image the lips were kinda low and wide on purpose, to be honest, to make her look slightly creepier. Eh, well I ended up concentrating on the hair anyway.

    Thanks again!!

New upload! Did this quick landscape today.
Sorry the photo really sucks. It looks a lot better in person. Need to figure out how to get my sketches up properly. It looks way too flat and darker.

I did this last week. Funny thing is, since then my shading technique has improved A LOT.

Hello world, I am back, with my pencils and kick ass sketchbooks in hand!
I am now 16 and my life has changed A LOT since July 2009, and so has my artwork I suppose.

    This is my latest sketch!

It's an Eagle from Scotland. I went there about 2 weeks ago to leave my brother behind for University, and I fell in love with the countryside. Especially the Highlands. I've been wanting to visit them for a few years now!

Done using a 4B pencil and a rubber
