    "After the giants war..."

Once there were giants walking on this earth, fighting each other...
fighting for what? For whom? Nobody knows...it was such a long time ago, it has all been forgotten in the shadows of time...
now, those almost indestructible shells are the foundations of newborn cities...

    CS4 and Bamboo
    take care everyone
    peace!

    Hi everyone

this is my entry for Newborn
the idea being that the character constantly growing and changing by shedding her skin, and hence being born again. I was hoping to keep a reptilian feel by adding a chain of bows to her costume, to simulate scales maybe that of a crocodile cross with a snake.

A lot of amazing entries. It never gets old to see the things people concoct in their mind ^_^

The initial idea of mine was the birth of a rivalry which may or may not have been a bit lost in the process. Still, this was great motivation to push myself outside my comfort zone, and I had a lot of fun with this. Good times

    Hi all

I have nursed this creature and fed it green oil paint. Now she is ready to feed - or perhaps something else. Who knows? At any rate, the young man is in some sort of predicament.
Maybe she even thinks he is cute, but with a creature of that size and constitution it is certainly no candlelight dinner that awaits him.

You can look at this picture as a more or less classical alien-meets-human-situation, but there is also a layer of mythology to it. For millennia gods have assumed many different guises and most often they have had animal features. Furthermore, they were fond of members of the opposite sex among the human race (to say the least).

Here, I have given the creature insectoid features which also bear some similarity to what we perceive as alien features (the creatures that our ancestors called gods, we call aliens - each age its own mythology).
The way the creature points at the guy is not just a "I want you!" gesture, it also reminds you of Gods gesture in Michelangelo's fresco of God creating Adam. Maybe this meeting will transform the guy in some manner. Maybe he will be newborn too.

P.S. The picture is made with oil paint on masonite board. The lighting conditions were awful when we took the photo. It has been rain and thunder the last couple of weeks - and very dark. If we get a bright day one of these days we will take another photo.

P.P.S. Edarttogo - your contribution is really, really great!

This has been such a fantastic adventure as a contest.
    Here is my entry

    "At Least I'm Honest"

Weather you are a a poet, a writer, an artist, an actor,or even none of the above, when we create, it all comes from a deep well somewhere inside. As humans we have a need to try and hide so many things about ourselves that there are few visible truths on our surfaces. And sometimes, you have to really just pour yourself out there, and take your chances that someone will understand it. The character the viewer is seeing is not a good person or a bad person, just an Honest person. That was my thought process behind Newborn. Everything we create must be born somewhere of us.

    Good Luck to all!

Yggdrasil - the world tree. Once it reaches the end of life span, it spawns a young Yggdrasil. The scene of birth is quite surrealistic and a spectacular scene, as two events occur at the same time - old Yggdrasil dying and rotting, alongside with surrounding and young One seeing the world for first time in warm and cheerful atmosphere. For mentoring young tree, a ancient guardian of forest is called to take care of him and prepare for role of the most powerful being in the world.

    Thumbs up

Wow, so many incredible entries. Pretty exciting.

I probably should have explained my theme, but I was a little too excited by this whole thing and got swept up.
While pondering the theme, I became intrigued with the very notion of "creation" and bringing creations to fruition. The intrinsic human desire and the drive to create is the central focus of this piece. This drive can be overwhelming and so vast and expansive that often times we find ourselves dwarfed by sheer aspiration and the magnitude of our undertakings. What I find dually interesting is our ability to identify ourselves through our creations- to create a self and a legacy by creating. And thus I arrived at my concept. In this particular image, a new creation (though inhuman) has begun to materialize from seemingly nothing amidst the cosmos. Yet despite its relative infancy, this "newborn" has already begun to create something, though its motive a mystery- to satisfy the urge to create or perhaps to provide itself an identity amidst the universe?

    Here's mine:

The scientists at the Moseby Center for the Study of Artificial Life are very excited today, as the announcement of the first bio mechanical marine life form is finally giving birth. After many unsuccessful tries, the baby appears to be healthy and they are hoping to extract her today. "The implications, the experiments, we can't wait to see how she came out, what she's really made of!" one scientist said. There are reports of the "mother" of the mechanism lashing out and injuring scientists, as she has had over 300 miscarriages and is reported to be "unusually protective". Security at the Moseby Center assures that everything is under control.

Here's my final entry. It's not quite done, but it was a fun exercise doing something completely crazy.

The term newborn is interpreted here in quite a surreal manner. It's about the birth of a new hope in a world which is about to fall into complete chaos (apocalypse). Other than that it encompasses many different symbols of what I relate to "birth".

I'll post the finished piece some time later this month.

Hi everyone Some phenomenal entries in here! I have one piece for the contest below. Good luck to everyone!

The painting is intended to be about the reinvigoration of a dessicated bone field, dead and barren from a battle that took place long before. The two figures are Life Wardens (akin to a druid, perhaps), mother and daughter, both investing in renewing life from the bones and earth through magic, or by just tending to it as the child is doing. In the background are the more idyllic lands on the boundary of the bone field from where they've come.
