Fayestardust's Sketchbook (updated in this decade, I swear)

    Hello everyone,

I'm rather new to CA.org, but was told to go here by a member a long time ago. Finally decided to do it, as I'm now graduated from university and thought it was time for something new.

Small introduction is in order I think. I am first and foremost a digital artist. My favorite style is realism and I've learned to paint digitally mostly by recreating photographs as best I could. My first tablet I stole from my dad years and years ago, some tiny Wacom Classic that I still have laying around in a cupboard somewhere, and up to about last year, still used (it's about eight years old now, old lady).

I didn't start painting seriously until about three years ago, and since then have improved fast, according to some. I, however, think I lack a sense of originality, but I'm trying hard to improve by not only drawing photographs, but also just trying to paint and draw unreferenced.

My strongest subjects are portraits, because I do them so often, and even though I'd like to move on to getting the hang of full body anatomy and other stuff, I very often find myself in lack of time.

Currently, my tools of trade consist of a Wacom Graphire 4 and a Wacom Cintiq, along with a version of Photoshop.

Anyway... Recent drawings, lets have a look on my computer, shall we?

moosepaws Thanks for the welcome, and yes, I will indeed pay extra attention.

AsaB Hey darl, good idea, I shall, right now... see below?

    Bit big, sorry guys

My favorite work is the third. Funnily enough it's the first digital portrait I ever finished.

Since I generally find drawing men's faces a lot harder to draw than women's, I decided to do a few more sketches tonight. It was fun and not so time consuming.

    Fayestardust's Sketchbook (updated 31-07-09)

It seems I have gone backwards and am no longer able to draw accurate portraits, but I promised myself I would upload every sketch I did to this thread, so there!

These are actually a little bit older but they looked like they could fit in here. The first being a coloured sketch dump, all referenced, and the second is a depiction of another character from my novel.

So, I decided I need to upgrade the stuff I do with pencil, most of which is horrible.

I actually went and pressed ctrl+Z when I wanted to erase a line... how sad...

Anyway, some inaccurate faces, anatomy practice and a girl I decided is named Dotty Polka. The dress she wears is actually the one I'm wearing right now.

    Hope you enjoy.

Oh, I need tips... I can only use one hand, my right one, and I lean on it constantly, thus smudging my lines. I know if it's an hold-the-paper issue I could use artists tape to stick the paper to my desk, but I think it's basically just a leaning tendency. Does anyone know where you can buy those spiffy gloves for drawing? I think the real Wacom Pros use them for their Cintiq to stop it from getting greasy but I can't find them.

    Cheers.

Three hour speedpaint and my first ever greyscale. Damn, that's not easy.

    Anyway,

James Dean, with most of my sketch erased but not all of it...

Feel free to critique this one, it'll help me improve.

Finally have some time to visit your sketchbook! Nice sketches and studies. And omg that recent speedpaint is really great! I admire everyone who's able to get something like that done in a relatively short time.

Man, it's amazing what a pain it is to draw something you aren't very good at and for that reason dislike drawing.

More anatomy stuff. Badly done. But hey at least I tried.

More really quick rubbish ones. But I'm starting to like it. I don't know if anyone actually looks at my sketchbook, but I find it amazing how motivating a journal-ish thing can be, because you get to look back and then smile broadly at your progress.

So, I'm liking this pencil thing. Is it new? Haha, just kidding. I find it easier to improve my pencil drawing skills than to really permanently improve my digital art, other than use of colour. Basically because there is no CTRL+Z on your pencil and it thus forces you to just keep trying instead of pressing the buttons. Pencil makes you fail, and then learn.

    Ok, rant over.

Pencil portrait. I actually tried to shade this time. FAIL. Ok, on to the learning...

Please give me assignments, very straightforward ones, thank you!

I found a work in progress picture of a painting I finished (scroll up) and it only just occurred to me how much I like this one better than the result.

    Simpler background?

    Great studies; you're quite skilled.
I thought some of the pieces were photos for a second. Your usage of value is really impressive.

I did another speedpainting, but it's so good (in speed painting terms anyway) that I can't really call it one. This took me five hours. It's Canadian actor/singer/dancer Drew Seeley.

very nice stuff! your realism is great, and so is your colouring.

maybe work from more references/do more studies to nail male faces? it's very hard to get the angles right

Ok, guys, this is what I do when I'm bored. Drawing one eye is always easy, but drawing the other one to match? I'm lazy tonight.

Also, I want to turn my online novel Book of Dreams into a graphic and am looking for help/a partner in crime. I posted about this on the mentor board. Please check it out and tell me if you are interested.

    Boo Thanks!!!

    ---

So, I am making these fantasy website designs for a friend who has an online rpg game called Soulhunters, and I just wanted to post a graphic (sketch) for it.

It's a dragon. Duh. I'd never drawn a dragon before, though. there are all sorts of things wrong with it, I'm aware, but I don't have enough experience to fix it. The balance is completely off.

If anyone could draw me an improvement or suggestions of any kind (paint over my pic, if you want) that would be greatly appreciated.

Drawing a dragon is pretty fun.

A little concept art for a graphic novel that I'm starting with as many people involved as possible. Well, conceptart/character design.

Steampunk world, so hence the pocketwatch...

If you're interested in joining, hardly anything is set yet, not story wise or art wise. (so we need artists and writers) so there is loads of experimenting possible, think character design but loads of conceptart too.

It's called THE KEYMAKER, and one of the characters will be the keymaker but it's not this dude. (the keymaker is a girl.)

The keymaker can make any key to fit any lock in this world. There used to be a lot but now there's just one left and she's missing. What she's needed for we don't know yet but this dude will go find her.

    We need talented people aboard.

If you're interested, please let me know (PM) and I'll send you a link to our forum, and then I'll approve you after you've joined.

So far there are five people interested in this. Yay.
