    Laurent's sketchbook

    Hi Guys,

I need to draw more !

I hope this sketchbook will help me to produce more work. Don't hesitate to hassle me if I don't post work and sketches often enough. Some weeks I really need a kick in the pants.

Here is a digital painting I've done last week. More to come soon !

    Thanks a lot !

Ha ha, I am having a hard time deciding if that is more cute or terrifying. The detail in it is so easy to overlook the first time one sees it. Especially in the mouth. Really wonderful painting. I think, the only crit that comes to mind, is the eye ought to pop a little more? Maybe deepen the contrast in it? But it is a personal preference.
I can't wait till you add more, it'll be a treat!

Thanks I always have to contain myself when I add detail - I put my headphones on, sip a can of diet coke and often go overboard with it

Here're a couple of sketches I did before I began the painting. I'm glad I went for something cute at the end - cuteness should rule the world.

I don't know, that first shark is looking pretty smooth. Wouldn't mind seeing a painting for him, too.

I do like sharks, indeed, they're like tigers in fish disguise. I draw other animals though - I'll post more paintings tonight

And here is another quick painting I did last year. Like the shark with the can of coke, these are paintings I'd do in a couple of hours in the evening. I should do more of these as they really helped me to experiment with new techniques...

Here is a new painting I've just finished. I've also added a couple of sketches I did while brainstorming the main idea.

Ask me to draw a bloodthirsty shrimp and I'll feel right at home. But ask me to draw a person and I'll struggle and sweat. I mean, I can do something quick but getting it "right" can sometimes take hours. So let's practice a little. I especially like the one of the far left, I may do a painting of her later

Hey, i love your adorable aquatic creature drawings, those sharks are the best, i love the little hammer head. But those are over a year old, yowza! I'm really glad to see you posting again after dropping off last year.

I really dig your pencil rendering skill, and your critter design is top notch. You say you struggle with people but they don't look bad. I hope to see you practice more with human anatomy and gesture drawings sometime now that you're posting again though. keep up the good work, you've got the talent, you just gotta hone it!

    Thanks mate !

I know, I freaked out a bit when I saw the date on my last post... time flies !
I really need to practice more with humans, I've had this project of comic book going for years and I need to get "fluent" in human anatomy before I start. But I won't give up on my pet critters ! Thanks for your awesome feedback !!

Thanks Oatestwder, I really appreciate your feedback - by the way, I have done more color paintings since the ones I've posted here. Some are in my gallery, others on my personal site.

Here're two new sketches. I couldn't get the space-girl proportions quite right - damn! - so I gave her a giant spider-robot to cheer her up.

Ok, I got a bit carried away with this one. I started with the elf girl then I felt I needed something in the background... and as such I ended up with this big dude. My brain is overly screwed sometimes...

Halloween is around the corner so it's a perfect time to get into spooky (and silly) mode. I've decided to draw all sort of weird creatures this week. Don't let the critters bite !

Thanks insanelight, I really appreciate your feedback.
It's actually funny how #22 came out, I didn't have this composition in mind at first, I only wanted to draw the girl - but then I carried on and the big guy just came out. I love this kind of creative process where I have no idea where I'm going and then - bang ! a big dude in the background !

Here comes 2011 and my first sketch of the year - I did a bit more work on this one and ended up with a color version. It was kind of fun, reminded me the time when I used to paint with inks, I'll probably do more of these in the future. I wanted to post something before, but I was on vacation in France and I've been cultivating my jet lag since I got back - sort of a bad excuse, really, I could I've got my pencils out rather than watching movies, but my brain was in a fog and refused to answer my calls.
