    Draw or Die

Hello everyone, my name is Eric. I'm 20 years old ( 22 now), just graduated with my associates in illustration from DCAD and Im eager to start my art career so I'm taking the time to build myself a portfolio for just that. I have an older sketchbook that I've been updating for a few years but I don't believe is reflects my skills anymore and I decided to start a fresh one. To start off I have a few digital paintings and tons of pages from my small sketchbook that I carry with me everywhere. There is a healthy mix of figure and life drawings, character, vehicle, and environment designs. I hope you like.

Critiques and comments are always welcome.

Looks great so far! You seem to have a great handle on graphite as a medium. The few digital/color works you posted feel a bit clumsy; they lack the subtle control of value and shape that your pencil works possess. So my suggestion is, more color and more experimenting with other mediums. Keep up the good work!

Really fun sketchbook to look at. I like your line quality, it's graphic and a little cartoony. But you may want to start using a straight-edge when drawing architecture. Anatomy is good (don't listen to the douche-bags on here that nit-pick about anatomy too much). You also have a good sense of lighting, nicely dramatic in some pics. The only thing I found lacking is texture. Start playing around with just drawing texture and then start incorporating it into your sketches. Please post more, I'll be checking in on your sketchbook.

Lord Senneian- thank you, you really hit the nail on the head, I've been trying to work on textures recently but more so in photoshop, experimenting with different types of brushes. I honestly never thought about it in my sketches but you're right it would bring it to another level. Thank you.

Haha, good to hear you graduated, im also at DCAD at the moment.
Anatomys looking nice, the only things that REALLY bother me are those thick black outlines. Im not against outlines but maybe make them lighter, or add a black background to get rid of them.

    Interesting stuff...

Some cool designs in your mix. I like that your are doing some figure work. I would like to see more of your stuff worked out like thumbnail ideas working towards the more finished ideas. Anyways looks like you are on the right path just keep going.

I like the design for the Fighting Seraph--that hat is really interesting. I created a "Sith Lord" for a previous CHOW with a similar hat haha. The picture so far has the possibility of being really good. The pose is wonderful, the design suggests a culture within his world, and his expression is convincing. Make sure to organize your composition value-wise though. Remember that although the picture might make sense--the lights and shadows are good, the anatomy is good, etc.--it still may not be interesting. Janaschi I think is really good at creating interesting pictures, if you want to look at her stuff.

I think your pencil work is good, but maybe you could change the style to make them more interesting. They make sense (anatomy, lighting, etc.), but the way they're rendered seems kind of boring. I really don't know much about pencil-rendering (*ahem*I'm poor at using pencils), but maybe incorporating darker values or different methods of handling the pencils. I know some really good pencil artists here--I like Chromosome's style for example--so imitating their style might help you in that respect.

Firstly, your recent work is very good. Its amazing to see so much progress on one page.

Your colours are good, but I think that your lines might need some more work, before you take on huge coloured projects. Your colouring is solid, but its what's underneath it that counts. If your lines are lacking, then the picture isn't gonna look 100% regardless of how well you colour (which, by the way, your colouring is good)

My best advice is to spend some time with posture, as I feel this is the spot you need to work on the most, from what I've seen. SOME of your work is great and doesn't need work, which is a bit confusing how some turn out fantastic, and some not so much. Make sure you get lots of perspective practice and just keep on keepin' on.

Still though, an amazing first entry Keep posting y'all! 8D

I thought I was finished with this piece but after a few days of looking at it I see some more work that needs to be done. I think the main characters anatomy is a little off, the arm I think but I'm not 100% sure, if anyone wants to do a paint over to help me out feel free. I'm going to experiment with a few things myself.
