    In progress

It seems nothing really goes as planed lately, and I'm filled with uncertainty and doubt. I'm searching, but don't know what I'm searching for.

I'm starting this sketch book. Hopefully I'll find what I'm looking for alone the way.

These is a character design I did for a Chinese novel, "Daomubiji" (Grave Robber's notebook" working English title). People are translating it into English right now, hopefully you guys will get to read it. It's really cool book.

I did this little drawing during grad school, just a random sketch. I really liked her and always wanted to do a color version. So about 4 years later, I finally get around and decide to do a color version. But after I finished the refined sketch, she turns into a completely different concept. LOL that was fun....

Here is 05 version of "the Lady"

    The Knight

When I draw those two sketches, I never thought of doing a matching panel, but after I was done, they looked kind of nice together. That's where the matching panel painting came from. Also at the time, I saw Michael Parkes' two panel painting about Dante and Beatrice. I never liked Michael Parkes' works, but I really like the feel of those two paintings. an innocent Beatrice and a serious and tortured poet.

I don't really have that much thought for my panels though, I just like to draw pretty pictures.

    Here's the original 05 design:

    Here's the new design.

I always have the feeling, there're something magical about drawing with pencil and paper. and that magical feeling just got lost in digital. I'm not sure if it's just I didn't do digital long enough or digital has a different kind of magic that I have yet to discover.

I didn't get much done today.

Very few people here draw from line art. Looks like people just start with rough color patches and add detail to it. I just can't draw that way, every painting I did came from a black and white line art, and I work from one area to another, normally in separate layers like skin, clothing, weapon, background... good thing about this method is if I screw up one part, it won't mess up the rest. But the down side is sometimes I get into details and forget about the bigger picture (literary). I think I'll try working with color from get go, see if I like it that way.

You have lovely lineart. You know, what I really liked seeing - as I always do - is when you took those old pieces, went back to them, and gave them an update with beautiful digital coloring. Even more so, the Chinese take on the 'knight' and 'lady' theme tickled my bones because I love Chinese-inspired costuming and hairstyles. Are you Chinese by chance?

Your color sense is very strong and those hues are gorgeous. I think you already have a great sense of structure when it comes to the face, but watch out for the hands. I noticed on the piece with the lady that her revealed hand looks unfinished when it comes to the polish on the clothing, hair, and face.

Keep it up. Your SB looks promising.

ShroudStar: Thank you for the comment and the encouragement. I have so much to learn, so comments and critiques are especially appreciated.

You're definitely right about the hands...the truth is, when I came to the hand part, just lost patience...now that I look back, the rough hands do stand out, when the rest of the piece is rendered with every little detail. I'll be more careful next time.

and you're correct, I am Chinese. I was born in Beijing, and came to the US in 2000.

CHOW 166 - Pride and Prejudice.

I never like the book, I don't like Jane Austen, I think her books are shadow and trivial, and the women in her book just won't stop talking!!! I mean, take Pride and Prejudice, these two sisters can talk for 3 or 4 pages...I mean Com'on!!! Don't you have better things to do?!

But then again...It's rather fun to do Elizabeth, the way I want her to be, strong, self-confident, proud, flirty and hard-headed. I enjoy the idea giving her a very modern "in your face" attitude, but still keep her costume and appearance consistent with her time period (early 19th century), I want to finish it and see how it looks~~~ It would be fun!

Here's 3 different sketches I did for her.

Lovely CHOW entry, fluorine! I thought your initial lineart was gorgeous in regards to the flowing drapery of her dress. It really fits the era that this piece is designated for. Like before, your eye for colors is superb.

I thought my hunch on you being Chinese was right. I've noticed that many Chinese people tend to draw a lot of Chinese-based art - which I've also done - and they really get finicky on the details of the clothing and accessories. Seen it one too many times to not notice it by now. It seems like part of our cultural heritage just spills over and you can't deny that ancient Chinese clothing is beautiful.

ShroudStar, thank you for stopping by. As for the Chinese influence, I actually want to take in different styles from different culture, I think it's very important for an artist to absorb new and different things. But for some reason, the art I make for myself almost always looks just a little bit "Chinese". I guess that little bit of "Chinese" just build in.

anyway, here's a new art I did. A personal project.
