Hey all!
I hope you guys and gals are doing great.
Here's my submission for the "Newborn" contest.
I wish I had more time but im inbetween assignments and could only affors about 3-4 days on this, so I had to go with a composition with a lot of negative space.
Best viewed (and intended to be viewed) on a black background

There are a few things I could have done better I think, the blinds are too big on the window and I think I could have maybe taken the creature to a more visceral, grosser level, but I really wanted some humanity to be intact, I find the more alien the creature the less were able to see ourselves in it and ultimately we lose that connectivity and impact with the viewer. I also wanted to leave a backdoor open for the viewers imagination in case they saw it as once human.

Thanks very much for this feedback, it really makes my day when I get to hear what stories people come away with. You also pretty much tagged it right on, which is just too cool. The idea was definately an invasion type scenario.
Of course whether they landed from another planet or dimension, or were hapless victims taken over by a parasite or maybe were even exposed to some form of weird radiation and mutated, or something even more far out than that - is entirely up to the viewer, just how I like it.

Thats a stud, or could possibly be a 2X4 or maybe even a window frame given the scale to the moth. If youve ever noticed in attics or basements there are sometimes stilts or support beams in odd places.
Your basically looking through some sort of missing area to a wall, it could be missing for any reason, or possibly never completed to begin with, or maybe even boarded up - there are plenty of things that dont make absolute perfect sense in buildings. It looks more balanced if you view it on a black background, which its intended to be viewed on.
The green is illuminated fog, or dust or whatever it is thats steaming off the eggsack, use your imagination, its really only there for ambience.
I went about underlighting the eggsack like your talking about initially but it really cooled off the eggsack too much, in addition to conflcting with the pinks, creams and greys of the eggsack, and theres enough of a little ambient reflected light in there to represent it.

Its not perfect and Im certianly not pretending to be a flawless draftsman, heh - quite the contrary.

I appreciate your attention to detail and critique though.

I never save my WIP's since im constantly working over them and spending so long on each piece, there would be hundreds per work and quite frankly I dont want the clutter in my folders.
I only work on 2 layers, one of them a safety layer so I dont lose what I like, so the work tends to evolve really quickly as I try to capitalise on happy mistakes or good grooves and cant be bothering with capturing WIP's that are useful, it just distracts me.
Im a shitty multi-tasker and like to stay locked into one mode.
Filming something will be in the works soon, thats much more hands free and would be way more useful I think.

Open it up on a black background fullscreen. Thats how its intended to be viewed and it looks most balanced that way, at least I think it does and thats how it was created. It gives more of an impression that the room continues off camera, at least thats what ive attempted to give the illusion of.

Hey its not boot licking to tell someone you like thier stuff, I send man-crush love-letters to el coro all the time about how much I like his art and vision; we all like to hear it and it keeps us going.
I really appreciate the support, I never get tired of it - its what I work for, I want people to like my material and be moved enough to actually write something, it means more to me than you may think.

As for an illustrated graphic novel: thats a dream of mine. I am doing pre-pro for a short illustrated horror story that I plan on being able to finish in between my paying gigs.

Yeah, its buttock could definately be more fleshed out, and probably should be. I vaguely remember doing it but being unsatisfied with the balance of the picture afterwards and then started putting in a curtain to justify its lower half being obscured from backlighting, it is leaning over into the window-light after all. But I agree, it should be more convincing right there - I might take a crack at a touch up.

Thanks crayonmaster! Yeah its coming out of a corner there, I tried to make that upper corner with the gross membrane/hive thing be an anchor of sorts so the action radiated from it, but I dont think I was as successful as id like to have been.
