ConceptArt.Org Foundations: Jason Manley Composition Download- recovered and complete

I have completed the first of a foundation series on the subject of Pictorial Composition. It is just about to come out of the oven. The info within is extremely comprehensive.

Topics covered in this three hour lecture and analysis download

    Composition Theory
    Principles of Image Design
Rythm, Emphasis, Variety, Economy, Movement/Continuity, Repetition, Balance, and Unity.
    Linear Design and Viewer Control
    Tonal Pattern and Value Composition
The Theory of Space and Creation of Depth
    Visual Narrative and Communication
    Lighting Control
    Mood Theory
    Dramatic Devices
    Breaking the Rules
A Crash Course in Composition History
    Assignment Given

During the lecture, many major works of art, of the best in history, are anylized and deconstructed to illustrate all points. Historical composition is one of the key tools concept and 3d artists, illustrators, and fine artists, have at their disposal to improve their works from imagination and from life. I do not think this info is all together in one place, anywhere else.

I have personally visited most of the major museums around the world in my studies of this precise topic. I have learned composition with some of my art heros and most respected colleagues incuding Jim Garrison, Mark English, Malcolm "Skip" Liepke, Gary Kelley, Jack Unruh, Marshall Vandruff, Justin Sweet and many others.
I studied in the museums. I studied in my history books. I then spent years in the industry working with all those you know from MB. The knowledge I pooled is now summed up, organized, and in one lecture video that will be out this week.

More info to come...for now, here are a selection of the many images I cover from throughout art history in order to teach this topic.

    Jason

    !!!!!!!

Wow, this is something I've been hoping that would get covered, so a four hour lecture from Manley Man himself sounds too good to be true. Can't wait. Only one question: Price? Need to know how much I need to save up.

Now we just need a color theory download...

I've not seen all this info in any one college course anywhere. It really is comprehensive. There are some areas left open to explore and grow but the roots are all in place within.

Obviously I don't know exactly what's in the download, but I'm pretty sure there's going to be waay more content than a couple college sessions has to offer. Pretty sure it's also going to be much cheaper. I go to a $25,000/year school, which comes to around $60 for a 1 hour class session (that's what somebody told me anyways :/)

If you can find an entire semester or even year of composition class in college with this much aggregated info I will sign up for that one myself. Drove me nuts back in the day that I had to go all over the country to find answers. In two years at Ringling I picked up about fifteen minutes of what is in that video..if that. I got really lucky with my earliest teacher, Jim Garrison. Two of the other teachers, ladies by the name of Darlene Swaim and Penny Watson were also really key to my early foundation studies and my understanding of deconstruction and analysis. After that I had my time with the other painters and illustrators and had most of it together by the time I hit Black Isle. Puddnhead and Sweet and Kovacs and Marshall focused on it for quite a while too. I learned a lot watching those guys. I got to understand the quick read better from that crew. Marshall's composition class is taught differently but his and that of my former mentor Mr. G were by far the best at communicating the foundations of all my teachers to date. Still it took gathering this up from all over to cover it all.

Thanks everyone...It is very simply handled, but the info is really deep. I think you will see art and your own work in a completely different light after this one. If any of the above listed topics are not familiar to you there are holes in your foundations. Best part about composition though is Im still learning even after all my studies over the years. More to learn...more to learn.

This is going to the top of the list of must have downloads.
Went to school, worked my ass off, graduated, got a job and learned I didn't know a damn thing. Looking forward to filling in some large foundational knowledge gaps.

Thank you. Yes I studied composition for ten years. That and color theory were the focus of the majority of my work and study. I have tried to sum it all up best that I could. I could go on and on about this but I also want to be sure that I only give the information required to spring out into the subject with a very solid base. The language or art is something we must all make our own. Which is why I have covered it the way that I have. There is depth there, for sure, and broad strokes as well. I really see it as opening all the right windows, letting in enough light, and enabling artists to look out into the subject and find their own answers too. First and foremost, I have gathered the language of composition, shown how many of the greatest artists who have ever lived have used those theories, and from there that magnifying glass is handed to you.

aww...you all are awesome. Thanks. I posted some of the images used to teach the topic. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. There are quite a few others as well but this should give a good taste. I cover a couple japanese prints in the beginning of the video that applies to those doing more linear flat work as well.

4 hours? That's insane haha. But it's good (or invaluable even) to have such a comprehensive and complete lecture in one video instead of spread all over the web in bits and pieces. I recognize a lot of those pieces and it will most probably a joy hearing you taking them apart. First minute buy for sure.

Now for the colour theory one.....

Yeah, same. Wow, that Icarus painting is extremely powerful. I just looked it up and it's by Herbert Draper, The Lament for Icarus, 1898.

If we're gonna be learning from paintings like that, then count me in... I'm just gonna need some money..
