    Shifty's Sketchbook

    Hi there,

I've been browsing the forums on and off for several years now, not making any real use of my membership unfortunately. I'm at University studying a slightly unrelated field but in my spare time I still love a good sketch!

I hope to use this thread for constructive criticism and essentially become an active member of the forums!

Here's some random digital sketches, for now:
I might scan some pencil work at some point too.

Thanks in advance for any input and advice

A quick play around with the first image tonight. Attempting to fix issues with the armour and add some more detail:

    Very rough.

Trying out some new brush sets. Colours were sampled from the reference image.

    Any criticisms?

I find I can block in colour and form quite well but I lack the ability to add detail.

Working on developing painting techniques, under painting etc. No references used.

A very quick sketch, again no references. Trying out tiger1313(?) brush set:

I like your very stylized almost abstract style. Its neat to see the different brushes you use since they create a lot of textures.

    Thanks for your comment

I love artists who almost replicate the feel of traditional mediums, hence the textured brushes.

I try to detail the work but end up liking it better loose and as you said, stylised.

maybe you should put a few details into your paintings, to get a focus. Now everything is quite uniformly. Just explore and keep sharing!

I love the textures your putting in to the work, so many conflicting brushes yet it melds together seemlessly. Have you ever tried painting for real with a printing roller? As your style reminds me of a friend of mines old work. I think your digi style might benefit from experimenting with real painting.

Keep it up! I look forward to seeing more

I painted with water colours as a child but longed for the opportunity to paint with oils! To this day(now 20 years old) I've never tried painting.

Here's a painting I've done in the last couple of hours taking into consideration the points brought up by Ivan:

I'd like to call it a speed painting but I spent more time on it than I'd have liked.

I also edited an earlier painting:

    Thanks.....In what way?

Some brutally honest criticisms on my painting, figures, subjects and lighting would be overly appreciated.

I think detail just comes from practicing. You might try some master copies of artists you like, but on the other hand you approach it with such panache that I would be hesitant to suggest that you do anything that would damp down what you're doing.

Painting a lot will get you where you want to go. Still lives, is what people tell me. Also human figure painting, and working in lots of different media. For you that might mean some paintings in the more digital style-- hard round brushes, transparency brushes, et cetera. I find that if I do things in different styles I end up improving.

Hi Strela, thanks for your input, it's hugely appreciated!

I wasn't quite sure what you meant by this:
You might try some master copies of artists you like
    Master copies?

I saw your post earlier, took your advice and decided to do some figure sketching this afternoon, in an attempt to improve my detailing and shading. I hope you like:

Reference from DeviantArt - Most of the time was spent getting the proportions correct - It's easier without references, I find :p

edit: Deleted the first one, as I felt it wasn't as good and also a bit crude for the thread.
