International Portrait and Composition Month - Portrait Gallery and Crit Thread!!

Hey CA peeps! So I've been painting these heads for the past two years over at the NEXT GEN ATELIER...and I figure as a shameless plug for my upcoming head painting download, and in honor of CA portrait and composition month, I'd post some of them in here, to encourage you to do some yourself and post your paintings too!

***quick edit insert by Jason Manley: See the below post by me or click here to find out more about this months portrait activiteeeez http://conceptart.org/forums/showpos...98&postcount=3 ***

Head painting from observation is one of the most challenging things an artist can tackle. I have learned so much from painting people. I'ts helped me not just in my career but also in being able to say what I want with my art. You literally never stop learning new tricks when drawing people from observation.

So take part, see what you can do, and post them here. They can be whatever media you like , and as much as i can find the time. For those supporting the community with downloads--you will get dibs on crits and input. I'll be happy to answer questions and give some pointers along the way. So that said, let me kick it off with this dump of heads some self portraits and various other studies, all from life. I've posted a lot of these before, but I figured it appropriate to stick them in here as a way to kick off the next month of art making. Best of luck in all your portrait painting endeavors!

Holy moly man! Coro that is the most portraits I have ever seen dumped in one day. Ever.

It's on!!! International Portrait and Composition Month starts now!!! Fingers crossed and maybe we can get Andrew Jones going again on that which he built his fine art career on. Android? You in?

Any media. Any styles. NEW WORKS ONLY!! Self portraits, people portraits, hell...even pet portraits (as long as a person is in them!!). Faces faces faces faces heads heads heads heads. The head painting here on CA is going to get better. It is an area we can all improve in and with a good push I think we can see the artwork improve across the site. Please take your time and do a good job. This will not be a race but a nose down, face deep, exercise in outward expression of the inner soul, anatomy, surface, brushwork (or lack thereof), and media.

Since it is portrait month, those who pick up coro's upcoming download will have a shot at getting crits here too! Both Coro and I will be around to offer crits and input for those who are posting their work (those supporting the community will get dibs by picking up Coro's download and help us all have this place to share)....I do not have a whole ton of time but I have enough to help quite a few this month. I am working on something too...fingers crossed I will have enough time to finish it. Gotta try though. However, everyone here is encouraged to crit and help others with constructive, well thought, input and ideas. This will be a very active thread. No doubt we will all learn some things by August 1st. Want to learn with us?

    Time to get started!!

    Possible assignments:

    1. Self portrait
    2. Portrait of a member of the opposite sex
    3. Portrait of a family member
    4. Portrait of a person you are in love with
    5. Portrait of a person who you wish was in love with you!
    6. Portrait study from the great masters
    7. Abstract portrait which communicates your inner self.
    8. Editorial portrait of a public figure
    9. Editorial portrait of a celebrity
    10. Portrait from imagination (any)
    11. Portraits of strangers (coffee shop, airport, or anywhere else)
    12. Portraits of strippers! Some of you are old enough and are up for adventure. Go for it.
    13. Portrait of the elderly (go draw at the old folks home! I used to do that when I was a kid and they love it and the place will say yes I'd think!)
    14. Portrait of a child
    15. Double portrait
    16. Portrait of yourself as the opposite sex
    17. Portrait of a famous artist.
    18. Portrait of someone sleeping.
    19. Portrait of someone who is of a race other than your own.
    20. Portrait of a homeless person. (in honor off Mr. el coro himself!)

    See you!!!

    I second that Android notion.

I'm definitely going to have to try and do some stuff for this. My portraits right now are nothing special, which gives me all the more reason to work on some.

I should do this. It can't be that hard... and I need something to break away from what I'm struggling with now. Could be a great learning experience too. I'm going to make a mental note to try assignment number 5 sometime this month.

Those both look really nice. On the first one though, the faces look too much like you applied a cut out filter to them (I'm not saying you did, it just leaves that kind of impression). Maybe go for something a bit more dynamic and organic next time you try that style, even if it's not precisely accurate.

Also, I don't know if you've already experimented with color on that second one, but a few well placed colored strokes could really make it pop.

I am game for this. I need to work on drawing (and hopefully painting) faces so I can keep the ones from imagination pretty fresh and unique. And building my skills would help a lot too.

Hey all. I'm a complete beginner (I did my first SP May '09) and my beginners scratches probably shouldn't be here in this thread but I want to collect the karma of at least trying and participating. I really want crits. In two months my drawings have improved only because of the kind advice Ive received on this site. I love CA.

    This is a self portrait.

Here's a portrait of an English student, from life. I know I messed up, but I feel crosseyed, trying to get all the proportions right. Crits appreciated.

Huzzah! I finally made time to do this... I wasn't going anywhere with what I was doing before. I said in my previous post that I was going to do Jason's assignment number 5 but I ended up painting myself:

    Name: selfportrait.jpg
Views: 5737
Size: 51.0 KB

Notes: I have shaved eyebrows that are growing back... Sorry if this makes your eyes bleed. I have a birthmark on the right side - THAT'S NOT A MOLE. kthx. Someone actually mistook it for that once. It's also how people recognize me.
This was based off me looking into a tiny compact mirror taped to one of my speakers. It's not totally accurate since my chair was irritating my back, my desk is wobbly... The mirror slid down twice, etc. My mom recognized me instantly without me saying anything, which is a good sign because the last time I attempted something like this she didn't recognize me at all. o_o

I was on quite the portrait kick for a long time, but I still need to improve especially capturing likenesses. Maybe we should have a Torso month I joke, I joke.
