A line is basically a minimalist definition of form.
So it's safe to conclude that a linedrawing/contour heavy drawing is a minimalist definition an intricate structure of form such as a face, a building or whatever is out in nature.

Easiest way to learn how to define form and how the true form of an object before you goes is by using crosshatching with a pencil to see how the form is sculpturally.
With paint, it would be by defining the angle/pressure/tilt/amount of pigment on the brush.
Since with paint it's more difficult, start with much, much more explorations of form in pencil(crosshatching) of objects that are relatively simple to understand form wise.
This is why people usually start with still lives, no matter how boring they can be

So take a cup, a mug, an egg, a bowl, a vase, a bottle, wooden cube.
Make a small composition, define the outer edges of your composition.
For example a rectangle, that holds all the elements of your composition.
Then see how much percent of the entire rectangle all the different elements(the bottle, the base, the cup) take up.
This gives you a rudimentary width and height for your objects.
Now compare what you have on your initial drawing with the objects in real life, do they feel wide enough, tall enough, is the neck of the bottle too tall? Too slender? Too.. bulky.
You try and complete the initial linedrawing by asking these questions over and over again, while trying to keep the initial percentages of the objects.

After you feel confident in the initial linedrawing, start adding mass by crosshatching what you think the form feels like as if you were placing your thumb ontop of the surface.
For the sake of convenience, think the following: surfaces of the object that come to the front are lighter, surfaces that go toward the back are darker.
This is called form lighting. It helps you think of form and only form.

So the first step handled proportion and composition, the second stage handles form and value.
Now if you practise this enough, and get a rudimentary handle on all these aspects, you can try going for more advanced subjects such as a human being and eventually try and add color to the series of problems

It is at this point, after you've familiarized yourself with the concepts of form, value,composition,(maybe add some perspective too eventually) and proportion that you can start going into detail.
Most people do this by studying anatomy, training their memory or explore in general what's beneath the surface/the components of the elements you're studying, it's texture, environmental conditions and so forth.

Tutor2u is what I use for Economics readings sometimes, so that just came to mind.
