any advice? I'm especially curious about the composition

My 1st reaction is I love this piece. RE compisition to be picky, the one thing I find distracting is that the man with guns Right arm looks almost as it runs into the mans arm behind him (the one holding the flag) I like the V shape of the neg space, and the V shape that the man with guns is making with his arms. Not sure what to suggest. Perhaps you could slightly move the man with guns to the right towards center--just slightly so his arm doesn't run into the guys behind him- (What do they call that in art school? A tangent? not sure. Anyway hope that helps.
Yeah, that's a tangent. I'm not sure if you have to move the pirate more to the center (I like the area that he's in, and keeps the composition lively), but maybe doing something to make the guy behind him recede - gray him up a little maybe?
You might also run into some trouble with the black shape that comes over the flag on the right - because the black gun that the pirate is holding is so close to it, it almost looks like the black shape is a crooked continuation of the black gun.
Also, the characters in back are so dark, they end up being a very dominated mass. Maybe try using more the color of the sky as they recede in space - it pushes them back a little farther, and looks a little more lively. I dunno, you can be the judge - I painted a little bit over your painting with the blue, to see if you liked it a little better.
Anyway, despite how it might sound with all my little suggestions, I REALLY like the piece so far!
Love it so far! I'm a big fan of this painterly style.
I was going to say that there's too much dead space at the top and bottom, but mvimislik's crop takes care of that... UNLESS this is for a book cover?

My main comment was going to be the crop too. mvimislik nailed it.
Painting is looking good!
