    frozenbean's sketches and things

    Greetings, fellow denizens of CA!

You can call me frozenbean, welcome to my sketchbook! I've been drawing and making art for as long as I can remember, but only recently have I started seriously attempting to do anything 100% digitally, always having used a scan or photo as the basis for anything I did in the past. Some of my efforts have been below my personal standards, but practise makes perfect and I'm determined to improve my work by whatever means necessary.

I do have some art posted in various other threads, but I thought a sketchbook would be the best way to pull it all together in a somewhat-presentable manner. So, without further ado...

    • the first image is one I started this weekend (June 6), after playing with the anatomy for way too long, these are the lines I came up with, and am now starting on the colours. I will post updates on this one as I progress

    • stepping away from digital stuff for a moment, I have some of the only other current art on my computer: life drawing, which was done over the course of about 2 weeks (a drop in class every Saturday). The top one is 38 minutes (tried to rush the cloth at the end, which was a bad idea), then about 10 minutes, then a 30 minute one at the bottom.

wow you have such a handle on anatomy, i'm jealous! The girls hand in the first wip looks a bit small though.
Your life drawings are absolutely solid, even if you rushed some parts, you got the structure of the figure in perfectly.

Thanks a lot! I'm trying to work on things other than figures now, since that's pretty much all I've ever drawn; environments and technology are like my personal Everests, giant mountains I have to climb in order to improve as an artist!

You're right, parts of that hand are a bit small for the perspective, the pinky especially. Thanks again!

Nice start! I like your digital, it would be great to see it finished! Maybe the neck is a little too thin. Anyway, your work is good! Can't wait to see your enviros and mechanical designs.

Nice work dude, I really like that first WIP. Can't really give any crits or pointers at this moment, other than to say keep up the studies!

Thanks for the feedback so far! Been feeling kinda sick last couple days. I blame my boss/co-workers for coming to work with a cold, so I haven't had a chance to get much done except for this quick "self portrait" I whipped up tonight while attempting to sketch. More tomorrow (or later today, i guess).

Edit: I just noticed that browsing through what I've posted so far, it looks like I hardly draw hands. Not true, I love hands and the digits on there! Maybe I'll post some hands next to prove (to myself) that I'm not scared of drawing them.

    nice starts on these digitals.
to go digital easier, go black and white first. then colors. some dudes in CA went to do daily selfportraits then they developed very good their digital art.

Nice figure drawings! Don't worry about the hands, just try to set aside a little longer for them in future in your life class. Nonetheless, keep up the good work!!

Thanks for the kind words, mate!

I draw hands almost constantly, actually - it's almost an obsession, as they're one of the most expressive parts of the body. With that in mind, I think it's hilarious that I haven't posted much with them in there!

    Arrow

So much for frequent updates, eh?

Unfortunately, the company I work(ed) for decided to lay off my department, so I suddenly went from having no time to draw to having a lot of time to draw while searching for work/before classes start.

So, as for this small collection of images:

numero un: some quick memory sketches I did this morning while sitting downtown sippin' a warm americano. All under a minute from glances as tourists scurried by (which is why they are all in profile).

numero deux: quick warmup sketch of a security officer idea I am going to integrate into a story I am writing currently. More on that later. About 45 mins in Sketchbook Pro.

numero trois: done from a photo I took at the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) a couple of years ago. I can't remember the title or sculptor, but it's some kind of bust (obvi).

Hope you all dig it. More to come!

That sucks about your job, but the best thing to do is utilize that time like you are
I really like number 2, and 3 is great! Hope you give us more goodies

    new stuff!

Oh man, it's been a while since I posted anything. Here's a bunch of quick sketches of tourists from the past few days, and a glimpse at my sketchbook cover work-in-progress done with acrylics (gouache and paint). Raspberyl and prinny were sort of done from reference. I did a rough sketch sitting in front of my computer and then fleshed them out while having some tea this morning.

    Hope to have more soon!

Oh man, is it 2010 already?

I haven't posted to CA in, like, forever. That should change starting right now.

Here are a few in-class life drawings that I did with compressed charcoal from last semester (around the beginning of December - old news now!).

I've resolved to do a digital portrait/study a day along with my regular sketching (which is the image at the bottom). I decided that I just wasn't working hard enough, so I have to put a bit more work in if I want to expand my skill set. So far, so good!
