Your digipainted chest seems very good! The last post of figure studies have very nice continous lines. I like it when they're as clean as you have em. I can see you vary the tone in the line a bit haphazardly (at least for my eye). They seem to almost go around in a "marching ant" pattern in some studies. I usually keep the darker line on the darker side of the drawing, but thats just what I've found to be best for me.

Would also help the scene if there was less gaps in the shading, and my eye could clearly see the change in direction from one piece of the figure to the other. But I'm just nitpicky. I think you're studies are good!

I'm seeing a lot of real progress since the first page. You've got a much better grasp of form and volume than you had, and I'd keep pushing that aspect of your work. Really make those shapes, even abstract ones, so solid you could grab them and pull them off the page.

You've still got a bit of disconnect between your referenced work/studies and imaginative work, but it's getting smaller and smaller. That's the hard part, of course, and I've still got to deal with it too. But you're definitely headed in the right direction.

redpandafire: Thanks a lot for the comment! I am trying to get my line weights right, but I am having a lot of trouble with them.

Nezumi Works: Yeah, my stuff from imagination are still really weak. But I am studying to get better! Thank you!

kyurai: Thanks a lot buddy! I am trying my best.

No image for today. Stupid Exams. Maybe later when I am done studying.

    I did well! yay!
Now school is over i can focus more on art! These are the first ones of many for these vacations. I also went to figure drawing session in the cultural center of my town. Fun stuff!

The few from life drawing session kinda worth showing. Well, even if they look like crap, i had a lot of fun!

I will stop drawing in big paper and move to normal a4 paper so I can start scanning them. These photos look terrible.

These are looking good, man a big improvement to earlier sketches, you're getting some great proportions and the form is really coming through in a lot of them. Now your free and done with school (like me!!) I'd suggest first of all doing a really in depth drawing, spend hours on it and really push it as far as you can in terms of value and describing form. Then just keep up what you're doing, but introduce more colour work and more faces. Hell lets see you do an illustration, enter a CHOW?

This is a summer for progress my friend! Take it easy

Thanks a lot LAL! I am nearly done with the hands section of Bridgman, its taking me forever.

Do you guys think its worth doing what I am doing? I am definately up to copying most of the books illustrations and i have the time to do so, but idk if that is very effective! haha.

I'm doing that with a couple of books too, so I think it's a good idea. Hope so anyway. It can get hard to resist just copying the illustration instead of studying it and learning what it says. Anyway they look really good. 160 pages in a week is really ambitious, keep going!

Hey man, thanks for the helpful comment in my sketchbook.

It's great that you're studying Bridgman and Hampton, your studies are all looking good. The main thing I'd try to be aware of though is in getting clean separation of the masses in your figures. By this, I mean try to make your overlaps a little more defined so that it is totally certain what goes behind what. Make your shapes clean and pretty. As it is, it seems like you may be hanging onto that outline a bit too much rather than how the forms are fitting into each other (structure). An example of this might be, rather than having a curvy line going from the Pectoralis and around the breast, break that line into a (relative) straight for the muscle fibers and a curve for the breast, indicating the way the straight fits into the curve. Straight vs Curve design is what it's all about. So again, rather than having a line surrounding multiple masses, break it into straights and curves for the individual masses that make up that line and clearly define how they fit together for nice structure.

I hope this helps, good luck with your work.

Digital paiting is addicting... Its 5 am haha. I had to stop or else I would wake up too late tomorrow.

I need to scan tons of pages and I will answer to comments tomorrow morning. Just wanted to show my progress in this painting. Feedback so far? I feel like I have learnt a lot with it through continous trial and error. Also, I feel like I spent way too much time.. Is it normal for me to be going at a very slow speed right now? It took me a few hours. This is the painting at like 25%.

    Thanks guys~!

Some really nice form in that last one man! really nice!
The thing that I see you missing so far is you're doing all this studying, but you're not applying! You've done 2 days of hands yes? Well you're far more likely to retain that information if you then try and draw some hands from youre head, or draw a whole figure but try to convey a mood through the hands. Implementing your studies is so important man! Get to it!!

    Peace
    Dan

Sir Cam: Thank you so much for the great advice. I have been having some problems and your advice helps alot!
    kyurai: Thanks a lot man!
danlambert: I cant agree with you more. I need to start applying what i learn! Thats the fun part and i am missing out haha.
    marc_redd: Thank you very much.

So i have been doing a lot of digital paiting experiments. Here is more progress on that figure and 2 experiments. I am going wayyy too slow on my painting so I did that last one by blocking in shapes. What i need is balance of my first and my last.. I was just trying different things, it was overall very fun. Just trying to learn

    Alternative,

Cool stuff in this thread. I haven't read all of the comments but I did look at the drawings.

    Some initial notes:

    1. I like that you're studying anatomy especially from good sources like Bridgman. Keep it up. You'll need to do more and much more in depth. Also try to do some of your own studies. If you have a access to a skeleton try drawing it from different angles and then laying in the muscles on top of that. It's hard for me to tell how much analysis versus copying went into some of the studies that I see here. Working from unique angles and working this stuff out for yourself will guarantee that you'll filling those weaker areas in your knowledge.

    2. Lighten up your lines. It seems to be that you have a heavy hand which is going to make things tough. The Old Masters would usually work very lightly and build up drawings in layers. I think that it is a grave misconception that artists should be able to just nail the final lines right out of the gate. Build up your drawings constructively...

    3. Think more 3 Dimensionally. Use simple mass conceptions such as the spheroid, cylinder, and box for the major forms and build the smaller forms out of the same solids. Draw THROUGH your work even running your lines lightly across the hidden side of forms. This is part exercise but part of the everyday bread and butter that you'll use either mentally or on the page for the rest of your career as an artist. I recommend that you do these exercises and post them here.

If you keep posting, I'll keep offering my humble feedback. I really like your voracity and look forward you challenging yourself. I think to become great we really have to be a bit nuts... way beyond obsession. Keep it up and lets see more!

Hello guys! Long time no see! I havent posted in 3 months, wow time flies.

Lately I have been packed with work for school, so I had to make the choice of cutting the time I usually spend scanning to just drawing. My time has been so limited lately.

Well, this is just a few of the stuff I have been working on. Not much since I did not want to post a million sketches, only the relevant ones.

Hello guys. Some stuff. The contrast after scanning is terrible, so things look really flat =/

    Quick pen sketches.

I really feel like my anatomy is starting to "click" in my head. I feel like I am slowly starting to understand how to lay it on top of the figure.

You seem to be doing Loomis too. Good work on it. One suggestion is to watch your line quality. It tends to be very scratchy. How about this: use a blue pencil. A lot of animators do it for their underdrawings before they go over it. It would allow you to remain loose but produce a final sketch with a more distinct form.

    Hi,

Nice sketches, you're definitely getting better and also your lines don't look so messy.

Those anatomy studies look really great, specially those of chest. I would suggest paying some more attention to proportions though, for example that last piece has too small legs as compared to head and back.

    Good job and keep posting!

    very nice !

the sketches in darker pencils have a little more sketchy lines than the others though.

I like the studies, man. It s nice that you re starting to work from reference as well. From what i see when i try these loomis/bridgman studies, is that when i redo what i studied from a reference photo, the knowledge seems to stick in head a little bit more.
