Pigeonkill – Thanks for looking. I will start doing other angles via photos soon. I’m just digging learning pencil work in front of a mirror right now. I am listening but Ill just be a little slow to get to doing other stuff.

Andres333 – Thanks for stopping by.

Jaro – Wow Jaro, I can’t believe you went to so much trouble to explain that to me. I really appreciate it. I’ve started playing around with that in some studies I’ve done. Ill try it in a finished drawing soon. Thanks man.

Thor’s Hammer – Why did I know that you’d like the severed head? Get well soon brother.

danlambert – Thanks for riding me about values again. It’s taking along time to sink in hey. I’ve played around with two mirrors and done a few profile studies. I’ll get something finished and posted soon. Other subjects are really needed soon, I know. I do doodle and draw other stuff but I feel I’ve been on a roll with these SP’s. As soon as they go stale, Ill start doing other stuff that is presentable.

Arish – Strong lighting is on the to do list. I look forward to experimenting. I’m really limited with space and time with drawing, plus I’m lazy aaaand I feel that each drawing is teaching me so much that I’ll probably do the photos, twin mirrors, strong lighting stuff when I go a bit stale. Thanks so much for commenting I really appreciate it.

Hala – Haha. Sorry for grossing you out. No more horror themes for a while.

Jeff Lai – Thanks a lot for your nice comment. They mean allot, especially when I see your outstanding sketchbook. You keep up the good work.

Kingkostas – Thanks mate. Please come again and I look forward to more of your stuff.

    Peetaer – Thanks dude.

MeticoloR’ – Thanks Western Australian French man.

Thanks everyone for your great input and help. I will do different stuff soon but I’m really learning heaps right now so just a few more weeks of this.

Hey, I really like this SP... nice job on the textures of the hat! It almost feels like I could touch it... I also like the grainy texture of the lines.

One small crit though - it feels like your ears disappeared ... I know the hat covers most of it but wouldn't the bottom of the earlobe be sticking out or something?

^^ What he said! Check back and see how far you've come! Maybe time to break out the paints or coloured pencils. Or maybe charcoal? I've still to figure out how that ends up on the back of my ear when I use it......

Wwwwow! The improvement in here is just incredible! Wish I saw that kind of turn around! I know it sucks to hear this- but with portraiture the proportions are the most important part. Its fun to get into rendering but if the proportions are off, then you are building a tower on a loose foundation. That said-you are making LEAPS every post. Keep at it-this is great fun to check out!

Hala – Thanks Hala. Your continuous support is awesome and appreciated. I know, I know - team chow, but when it's over, sp's please.

Virus – Thanks man. I love that straight up and down line direction. I saw it around here on CA some place and copied it. Its really fun to do and it has a nice look to it when it’s done right – something I hope to achieve in a year or two!!.

GMS – Thanks Granny. I notice that people are freaking at your sketch book cause they think you’re not around. They need to see the posts in Team Chow to know that you’re on fire right now. Amazing stuff coming out man.

No87 – check this dude out. Straight outta the blocks with brilliant sketches and digital portraits. Thanks for commenting here brother. You enhance the self-portrait sub-forum with your cool skills.

Shamandalie – Thanks little Shamandalie. Or do you only look little because Zal is so tall??

Liz Edwards – Thanks Lizzzz. You sure do really good dinosaurs. Oh and characters. Oh and armour. Oh and sp’s. Oh and guns. Oh and planes. Oh and….. you get the idea.

Jamesy – Thanks man. Southern hemisphere, South Eastern Australia, Melbourne, winter, night time, 9 degrees C (48 deg F), warm hat = good. I think we are about 4.7 miles from Antarctica.

Arish – Thanks Arish. I triple checked my hat pose. There are no ears visible, I promise. Those flappy ear bits on the hat are quite far forward, so Im probably guilty of not expressing that properly. But they’re wide and completely cover the ears. It is indistinguishable black shadow up under there when I look at it in the mirror. Thanks for helping me, please keep giving me crits.

Snootchy – Thanks for the kind words Snootchy. I know you work in the medicine field and I’m sure you can get either drops or a spray for tearing beads of joygasm. I appreciate you taking the time to look when I know you guys are flat out with the team chow.

Alesoun – Hey Alesoun, I know it’s not very adventurous but in this one I used colour pencils, though they’re all black ‘n grey. It felt completely different so Im starting to get the idea of the way that other media will change things up. Thanks for taking an interest in my pics. I’m very grateful.

Witek – Thanks for looking man. Your book is fantastic.

Sebbonaparte – Thanks dude. Keep up your hard work.

Sirkenneth – Thanks brother. I’m loving your book. Thanks for commenting here man. My proportions and eye measuring and line relationship judgment are sooo bad, you would never believe me if I tried to describe it. More than once, I have spent the entire 2 hours of a drawing session erasing with nothing to show at the end ‘cause I just can’t get proportions right. It’s improving the more I do but it’s got a zillion miles to go. Thanks for the support and kind words.

I bought a few Faber Castel Polychromos color pencils. Just blacks and dark greys. They feel so smooth on the paper after using graphite. This was meant to be just a quick sketch to check out the pencils but I kept going ‘cause they were so nice to use.

Very cool! I really like the studies of your nose from the two different positions... I think I might try some of those. Hmm, I've never used color pencils really, they always make me angry because I can't erase them very well... you look like you have got them down pretty well though.

    Hi jigje,

I think you're off to a very great start! It's great that you're doing self portraits instead of drawing portraits of celebrities. A lot of people do that when they first start off (I was one of them ) And it seems like it's looked down upon by art colleges. I think that's mainly because they're photo references though, I'm not sure.

My professor has some great handouts for portraits. She has a forum on here too. Let me give you the link to it.

Oh my goodness! Haha, you have already found her. You actually posted right before she posted her handouts for portraits.

In case you haven't stop by it for a while, here it is anyways.

    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...=137050&page=6

Keep practicing! You're improving so don't stop.

hey there , thanks for the kind words, well im kinda tall i guess
anyway i can see alot of improvement from ur first page to the current one. its really great. for advice, check on values on the contour of the face , like the deepest point like the end of the lips and eye socket, it has dark values, to push and contrast the rest of the face.

but i have to say, you are going pretty nice alright take care

Hi jigje your improving really fast which is great inspiration for me to see. I think it was danlambert who thought you might be good at caricatures and I feel that also. I think it might be because of the expression you manage to capture. Anyway well done on a great effort so far I can see you are building quite a following and I'm glad to join them and watch you grow.

haha yes man--please kick my ass once CHOW is over so i make more SP's.
this latest one shows a great improvement in values and rendering--it really has life and comes off the page (doesn't it feel so nice when you start experimenting and then you don't stop? )

    moarrr!!

Good stuff dude, those values are looking mighty nice with those new pencil things. A deep black is a sure fire way to get shit to pop! (used sparingly of course). I love it when you start something thats supposed to be small, then just keep going because your enjoying yourself, hurray for drawing!
Also got some great form going on with those nose studies at the bottom, keep up the hard work man

Yo Ji ! Really great improvment ! Your values looks incredibly good, and create a nice sense of light ! Just be carreful with eyes, i think it's the biggest weakness in your portrait ! Do more eyes studies, maybe they looks a bit flat, try to more think that there is the eyeball inside, it'll give more shape ! Keep it up !

Cdejong – Thank you Conner. Color pencils are fun for sure. Keep up your good work mate.

ArekusuVo – Thanks for the link. I’ve actually been there often in the last few months. Very cool thread. She’s your teacher? I reckon you’re quite lucky. Thank you for commenting.

Zalxemptyx – Hey Zal. I appreciate the tips. I just glanced at the image Im about to post and I need to push that stuff more. Ill get it next time. Thanks big Zal.

Twan – Thanks mate, your hard work is paying off, I see improvement in your sp’s. Keep it up.

Marian Rowling – Thanks for your encouragement. I have a following? I think it’s just you and my mum. Hang on….my mum doesn’t even know about this!! Haha. Thanks Marian.

no87 – Thanks Alex. I look forward to your cool sp’s man. Your last one really grabs me brother.

Halalala – Ok, so sketchbook forum seems quiet without you guys around so much, but on the plus side, all yours, Grannys, Matts and Snootchys good work is at a one stop shop in the Team Chow !! Very convenient.

Danlambert – Thanks for all your help and advice Dan. Values, values, values. Sheesh, Im thick. Sorry about that.

Walid D – Great crit Walid. Thanks man. I know my eye drawings are wacky but I’m working on it. Good to see you back around CA.

This is my first digital self portrait. I LOVED doing it. It took me forever with not much to show but I’ll be faster next time ‘cause I learnt so much about Photoshop doing it. It’s not an awesome Liz Edwards sp or funky no87 piece or Sketcheth masterpiece but I’m happy with it for a first go.

Thank you Liz Edwards for giving me so much cool advice. She patiently answered every question I had so thoroughly and I could never have worked out some issues without her kindness. Sorry if you cringe at being associated with junk art Liz.

hey great job man!! your proportions came out right still! I always have trouble witht hat when it comes to digi stuff. did u do a sketch first and paint over the sketch? or did you paint in shapes first??

my only suggestion is do the hair in Chunks--less lines--and for the texture you'll only need a few wisps (unles you going for hyperrealism, more power to ya!!!)

Looking good, can we see some more neck muscle too please?

That's awesome! Especially for a first go - I should dig out some of the horrific portraits I did in PS when I was starting out, eesh!

Perhaps pay more attention to the hair next time - especially the hairline. Just add strands so it changes nicely from forehead to hair. It'd look more complete if you added your shoulders, too. Not that there's anything wrong with creepy disembodied heads xD

Glad I could have helped now paint another!

looking good. don't be afraid to really work the colors you see. flesh isn't "flesh" colored =) really look at the reds and grays, purples, greens, etc...
