Hey guys. I love praise. Who doesn't? Keep praising if you like something I do or think I'm making progress. That is so appreciated and enjoyed. But PLEASE tell me what I'm doing wrong as well. I know I can get better faster if you guys give me your crits and tips. The crits will be more appreciated than the praise. Mind you, when I come to your 'books, I'll have no knowledge or expertise to crit you with, so it don't work both ways. Haha

Liz - Ta Liz. Maybe my confidence is growing. I think I was fighting it - tired etc, instead of it fighting me! Its all over now and I won. Haha.

Troubadour - Im a fan of any girl that draws a good ninja. Thanks, I really do want to try different media. I had no idea even what pencils to use just 2-3 months back. I saw a guy sketching in pen today and it was great. I might give that a real go soon but I really want to go DIGITAL.

Hala - Thanks Jersey. You are right. My shadows always feel too complex and I cleaned them up a little for this one. Gotta do much better though.

Granny - I do believe what you say man. There is no way on earth I could learn to draw on my own quickly and painlessly the way I feel I am here at CA. Im sure that all who get around CA and look and listen are improving heaps, all the time, and moving to awesome epicness. SOOOOOOO glad you are back and BETTER off than you were before. Marvelous.

This new one is pretty nice, though I do have one crit, your hair looks a bit like a chuck of plastic. I think it's mostly because of the outline you put around it, blocking the lighter values in with no depth. That hand looks really good. Love how your portraits never lose the interest factor.

looking good. remember, outlines will flatten something real quick- the hand looks a bit like a sticker placed on your drawing because of it.
i like the one with your tongue sticking out- the dark value on the collar would look great in the background- take a look at Sargent and George Seurat's drawings. keep it up

OK, so I promise I’m not too twisted, however, when I was trying to think of new ideas, this popped up. I love the drawings of Horiyoshi III, the great Japanese tattoo master and illustrator, and I haven’t actually seen a scene like this in his work but he does do severed heads really well.

I know the background is lame. I’ve concentrated on drawing what I see in the mirror and not from imagination for the past 3 months. I guess that’ll develop over time. I now know I can’t draw crows, rats or clouds.

I'm seeing improvement already from your first page, to your current drawings.

I have one fun suggestions. Maybe you can ask a friend to take a picture of you with different angle, one at the side or below the chin with different lightening. Then take that photo and draw from that. This way you can explore the angles that weren't possible with just a mirror and you might make your drawing feel more 3d.

Hey Jigje! Some really nice things happening with these portraits.

Something that I have been trying to do recently is to shade in the direction of the planes of the face. I find it helps to convey depth more effectively and also helps to improve your understanding of the overall structure. It also eases the temptation to use outlines to define some areas.

Here's some images that show you what I mean. The first is from a book called "Drawing Heads and Hands" by Andrew Loomis.








I hope it is some use to you, I found it helpful. Keep up the good work!

Great updates my friend. I really like the head on a stick. You're self-portraits are getting to be more and more interesting and refined. Keep at it and keep chugging them out. I'll be back in the fray soon.

haha, that last one is sweet. Maybe could do with punching up the darks and lights a bit, it's all looking a bit midtoney at the moment (that could just be the picture/scan though so feel free to tell me to shut up!). At the moment the head in the back has more contrast that the head in the foreground which in terms of picture making is a bit of a no no. Higher contrast areas in the foreground or in areas of focus/importance, lower contrast as things are pushed back. Also, the cast shadows from the impaled heads in the back suggests a different lighting position to the face in the foreground.

May I suggest trying a few portraits from more extreme angles. Like some more overhead positions, or from below, or profile. You could do this using mirrors if you have more than one, or alternatively work from photographs. Obviously working from life is prefered but it's going to be difficult to understand the structure of the head is you only have yourself to work from from life. Aaaaaaand I just realised Pigeonkill has already said the exact same thing , but far clearer. So yeah pretty much just ignore that last paragraph.

One last thing, I'm not sure how set you are in drawing just selfportraits, but maybe try having a go at a female portrait, either from life if someone will sit for you, or using photos. Drawing women is so similar and yet so incredibly different to drawing men, and I really think you'll find it interesting. I found that it helped me to develop a bit of a lighter touch, as more often than not a female face requires much more subtle control of values and such to make it look feminine. Or, old people. They are probably my favourite thing to draw as theres just so much going on with wrinkles and folds and stuff. Maybe try doing a portrait of yourself, them making yourself look older. I don't know, I'm just babbling now. Whatever you do, keep at it man

Hehe, I really like the last two SPs. Just wanted to add another suggestion - try positioning a lamp so that there's really strong lighting on your face, maybe from an unusual angle (bottom left corner, say) - and then you can play with the values & shading.

And I agree, taking pictures from an unusual angle is a good idea, especially with a strong facial expression - it's fun to draw and really makes you rethink how the face is structured, etc...
