Definitely more updates needed! Having said that, the recent updates that you've posted are awesome, particularly the nude figure - really impressive!

thanks for leaving such a helpful comment in my sketchbook by the way. Menzel is one of my favourite artists, although I haven't done many studies of his works. Time to change that!

Only a small update today ... First two are movement studies from various refs from deviantart, among them refs by http://tasastock.deviantart.com/ Last two are from mind. My colours always turn out so greyish =/ I spent 1 hour or so on each.

Those portrait studies are very good but If you do some from imagination your colours indeed turn grey. Maybe you can start in black and white, so you'll have more contrast.
Or just try thinking about it and add more saturation too it where you want to draw the viewers attention.

Another small update ... Last one is from mind. My anatomy from mind sucks. Need more practice!

@Lyno: Thanks for the tip, I'll try that. Haven't really grasped how to colour b&w paintings yet ... Have any tips?
@raminafshari: Why thanks =) I hope you're not feeling down but inspired.
@HerrleerzeichenS: Thanks mister! I'm from germany indeed. I'm not studying illustration or working as a professional yet but I'm working on that.

Another update. The last two and the character mug shots are from mind =) I feel I'm finally getting better at drawing stuff from mind ... It's far from perfect of course, but we're getting somewhere. I have to say drawing without ref really pays off. IMHO it's not good to always stick to refs ... You get used to the good results from painting with ref and then disappointed by the stuff you draw from mind.

Another small update. Need to update more regularly ...

A Bouguerau study. Sadly the proportions are all off ... its difficult for me to draw pictures with many people in them instead of just one or two. Also this took forever. But I guess finishing this is a success even if it took a long while. The last one is an expression meme. It was done from mind largely though I reffed a bit from my own face for the more difficult expressions. I'm aware its inconsistent ... Working on that.

Had to comment on the way you render trees/shrubs in pencil! I really like that style of illustration and Ive been working to move in that direction with ink rather then pencil.

Quick master study (Sargent). Kind of in a sour mood today, tried to draw but failed. No concentration. Le sigh.

Killer sketchbook m8 I would keep an eye on your color variation and contrast as some of your studies are looking plain and washed out in that department, but not all of them suffer from that. I hope you keep posting

You don't see a lot of Freud studies round this place, kudos for that. The time you've spent on master studies is obviously time well spent, but the stuff from imagination limps behind a little. I don't know what's more up your sleeve of course, so i can't say if you should spend more time drawing stuff from your head or focussing on sketching over rendering. But it's just a thought, you're doing damn fine overall

Some studies, one from life, a film still and an eviro study from photo (source http://burtn.deviantart.com/). I kind of hate the life drawing, it looks artificial and stiff. Need more practice.

    Tofa: Thanks for visiting!
Ian: You're right, I'm working on improving my colours ...
Nettle: Thanks. It's just practice =)
walnut: Can't see why, the man was a genius ... And you're totally right with the discrepancy in quality between the studies and the stuff from imagination. I'm kind of a coward when it comes to drawing/painting from imagination. Maybe because I'm used to good results from the studies and get discouraged when I can't replicate the same quality in stuff from imagination. Working on that too.
    Psycho: Thanks!
lionheart: Thanks. Not sure you can talk about a breakthrough though. As you can see there is quite a big gap between updates when I stopped posting but didn't stop drawing. There was no big epiphany moment if you mean that ... just practice practice practice with small epiphanies maybe.

The big shapes are looking good and that's great (the silhouettes, etc). That's really the toughest part of the battle.

RE: Imagination... if you get a sense of 3D locked into your mind, it's just a matter of getting a good gesture/storytelling pose and you can pull off good stuff from your mind, IMO.

Walt Stanchfield (from Disney) wrote a couple of good books where essentially he harped on the value of a good gesture in telling a story... you have to feel/take the pose of the model. And if your model is imaginary, you should try to feel the required pose in your own body. This helps with pulling off a good (non-stiff) pose from the mind.

I'm working on that very thing now Good luck, cuz you have what it takes to get there with your skills.
