did a speedpaint last week and decided it might be worth developing a bit more fully than i usually do

right so heres where things are so far - lot of behind the scenes stuff done, and almost ready to get stuck into something final(ish)

using the 3d as diorama /ref > NOT going to be painting over it (Big difference! ). It's something i've done only a couple of times before, and its also endorsed by James Gurney, so i'm not entirely misguided. Also doing a rough blockout of the ship has helped clarify a few things in my mind...whether any of this will make any to difference to the end result remains to be seen!

    ORIGINAL SPEEDPAINT

    FURTHER STUDIES etc.

...now all i need is the time, and patience, to finish it....!

so finally, finished! well more or less - its been a bit of a slog seeing this through this far, the initial excitement of an idea is one thing, but seeing it through to the bitter end is another.

Once i've got a few more "completed" pieces under my belt, i'll try and turn my attention to more colourful work - right now, it feels thats a seperate problem to solve, and one that i can tackle once i've worked out some issues with my fundamental drawing skills

anyway, thats it for now. Aaaand rest.

    *EDIT* DESCRIPTION!

This started as a speedpaint on the topic of "Mythical Creatures", so ended up going with something Siren-Like

"In the picture, the idea is that she sits like a spider at the centre of her lair, hoading trinkets, shiny things and favourite mementos. Waiting tirelessly, she's constantly alert for the movement of her next potential victim, that she can detect through an elaborate and far-ranging network of ropes, strings and threads, strung out across the bay."

Last image turned out great man! Wonderful control of values and edges. The only thing I don't get is the "story" behind the piece. Why is she tied down to a bunch of skulls in a swamp full of wrecked ships?

another speedpaint - this time of the very important topic of evil baby-geniuses and their quest for world domination.

Keep your eyes peeled for the hover-prams

So this is what i ended up with after a saturday locked away in the art cave - could be better, but not too bad overall. I think?!

Its been quiet round here again - as has been the case for most of this year, i've been doing fewer pieces, but trying to spend a bit more time on things when i get the chance. So hopefully a case of quality > quantity. Thats the theory anyway

Having said that i do miss the 'ol speedpaints, so might have switch things up in a bit (but possibly after a bit of a break to recharge the creative batteries, and enjoy whatever sort of summer we're going to get round here)

Right, so what we have here is a couple of more warhammer themed pics - a trusty old spacemarine, and a less well known (to me anyway) Empire greatsword from the warhammer fantasy universe. Theres some process shots and even....ANIMATED MOTHERFLUMPING GIFS!

Very happy with some bits, not so happy with others, but overall represents a big effort at trying to up my game a bit. Some valuable last minute crits from some extremely talented friends really helped too

    WH40K SPACE MARINE

    Process Shots

Process - animated gif (might need to click or save it to see animation in all its glory)

    Empire Greatsword!

    Process

Process - animated gif (might need to click or save it to see animation in all its glory)

And thats its for this update - time for R and R, and hopefully a bit of sunshine...

hi, thanks for steps the rendering of last work is great

but composition isn't, because all of them look on viewer and it cause felling as if they don't care about their surrounding and life threat.

well thanks for the input - its not an opinion i completely agree with, but i do appreciate your perspective on the picture. Certainly something to consider in future pieces

very, VERY disappointed to hear that the mighty Total Recall is going to be rehashed into some inevitably inferior form - so had a bit of an arnie moment and in a fit of martian despressurisation inspired madness did this

Also had a bash on sculptris - really good, for something thats completely free. Not going to replace zbush, but such a good introduction to 3d-sculpting. V. Impressed.

me again...i recently did this sort-of inspired by something else entirely - i'd wanted to do a pinup style piece of princess peach, but my sketchbook ended up with this. So rather than fight it, went ahead and did this terrifyingly-pumped, red-mushroom-addicted version of Mario

    Sorry Nintendo

been working on some studies lately - want to tackle a few areas, anatomy and colour theory especially. Film stills are a great reference for this sort of thing, so I started off with mr. burgundy here - its always really interesting how many subtle shifts of tone/colour there are in just plain ol bog-standard skin...
