Hello!

Like many others before me, I have started this online sketchbook to inspire myself to sketch daily. My ultimate goal is to be able to draw whatever I want whenever I want.

I am a traditionally trained artist and portrait painter. At the moment I am struggling to teach myself digital painting. You'll probably being seeing a lot of my experiments in the following pages. I'm 25, female, and live in Massachusetts.

quick sketch idea for last weeks Chow, Erica the Zombie Slayer. Never had the time to work on it, but thought I'd post the sketch.

2nd sketch is the in-progress sketch I did for the Joan of Arc Chow. It was the first time I participated in a challenge here at conceptart and I can't believe how much I enjoyed myself.

Nice, keep working on your faces though. I fell into the trap of making all my people look the same. It helps to study facial anatomy so you can warp and change the face depending on the size of the muscles and skull.

Good pose studies as well, more work please.

Your legs and faces from imagination are actually very well done. The faces are all cute and the legs are convincing and in natural looking poses.

I think you've been lying to use, clearly you've been drawing digitally for years!
I love this one in particular http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1243964551, the pose is great, there's lots of movement, good composition.

MrSmithe: Thank you! I have been using photoshop. I like it's brush system better than Painters. But it could just be that I don't understand Painter....lol.

Porg: Definitely something I need to work on. I'm going to take your suggestion and do a sheet or two (or more! lol) of faces with different shapes and looks. Thanks!

So here is my latest WIP for CHOW: The Bogeyman. Since I usually draw "pretty" things I've found this to be a welcome departure. I need to learn different ways of painting on the computer and get better with the different brushes. I think this is the first time I've really incorporated different brush styles in one piece. I also utilized the texture of the paper from the original sketch.

Critiques and thoughts are very welcome. Hopefully I'll have this mostly finished by the end of the day as its deadline is tomorrow.

What up Indigo! Thanks for swingin' round to my sketchbook. I really like what you've got going on in here. Your line work is beautiful...something I personally need to work on. I like your Boogey, very lanky and beautiful...I mean scary..heh. J/K. I really think you're at your strongest on the first two steps of your WIP sheet on this. Right now the highlights are bouncing all over the place, leaving me wondering where the light source is. Your figure studies look really strong, do you have any life painting studies for color? Those can go a long way when you have to start making shite up. Anyways, take care.

Ahh, how the hell did I forget about the Bogeyman CHOW!
Loving the skeletal design, and good for you for breaking out of your comfort zone. I think if you could figure out a way to place it in an environment or just on an object, just to ground it somehow; you will be on to a winner!

Oh, and thanks for the advice in my sketchbook.

I stumbled upon this while browsing through the CHOW: The City thread, and saw your sketch.

I think you have great talent to make so much detail and elegance from only a couple of lines.

Your drawings are really nice! As for a crit, I would say that your colour is too desaturated, almost like you're maintaining too much of your sketch. Try a little more vibrant and things will pop a little better I say

Looks like you have some pretty cool stuff here. I do tend to agree with monstertree here though. It kinda looks like you are working with a marker that is almost out of ink. But, I really like your face studies above. They look really nice.

Hello Everyone! Thank you for all of the wonderful feedback. All of the crits are really helpful and I really appreciate it. You guys are awesome!

CKLamb: Ahh one of my many weaknesses! Lighting! Lol. I think I had a light source in this painting at some point....I'm just not sure what happened to it. This is something I really need to work on. I keep reminding myself when I'm drawing. Any tips? Also, I've been meaning to do some digital paintings (portraits, still lifes, and figures) in color since this is something I haven't really done much of. Thanks much for the help!

Danlambert: *cough* whats that? Characters don't always float in space? *cough*. I'm going to take your advice and ground him. Hopefully add in a believable bg of some sort so I can use this as a portfolio piece.

Monstertree and Masayasu: Thank you both for your kind words. I definitely think you are right about the desaturated look to this and some of my other color work as well. Will keep this in mind for my upcoming projects. Thanks!

So on to the sketches. This is what I've spent the last couple of days working on. Wish I had more to show! First is some poses drawn from reference. I've recently discovered the site http://www.posemaniacs.com and I am like obsessed. So worked on some male poses since I really need to get better at drawing guys.

The second image is a grouping of motorcycle drawings. I've never drawn motorcycles before and had no idea they were so darn complicated. These are from stock photos from google search. Just for my own amusement. I apologize for awfulness in advance, lol. Also used a different brush then normal here, just playing around in photoshop.

Third sketch is a quickie of a robot idea that never got anywhere. Maybe I'll expand on it one day....

Lastly, my bogeyman chow entry. I want to work on some of its issues so I can hopefully use it in my portfolio...so any advice is welcome. Lots to work on.

schweeeet, can't go wrong with bikes and robots.
Nice to see some normally proportioned male figure studies in a sketchbook for once. All these huge muscular studies were beginning to give me an inferiority complex!

So I have to admit that I have a small obsession with old books/papers/ephemera. I go to a lot of flea markets and buy in bulk, if possible. I have many art projects in mind for these...but thats for later. Lately I've been buying old leatherbound scrapbooks for a buck or two, here and there. Today, my mother came across this lovely old scrapbook from 1931 at a yard sale. It's got these great, thick old yellow pages. Not a single page has been used. Now it's finding second life as my new sketchbook. You'll hopefully be seeing a lot of it in the future. Old paper has a quality to it that you just can't find today. I couldn't wait to use it, so today I sketched a quick pic of another strange obsession of mine....old clock parts. I have a basket of these just sitting in my studio!

The third image is a quick, hour and a half oil sketch I did a couple of months ago, from life. Need to do more of these.
