Thank you all for the encouragement. I really love to paint the human figure and I think that if you work hard you can be a master of the art of portraiture. I am happy to see people trying my techniques and am glad there is learning too. You guys are the best. - Zhanglu

Thanks alot for doing this Jason!

you are doing some things well..lighting is coming along ok...my suggestion is to look more at mood and who you are painting...she seems about 40 years old. Why is she pursing her lips? You must ask questions about it.

Also the eyes could be painted so they look both in the same point of space...one is slightly looking another direction.

also do not ignore the body and neck and shoulders

    Hey Jason !

Here is a GREAT GREAT FAN and supporter of yours from India!

And I don't really know how to thank you for ALL you've given me in life and my career by means of ConceptArt.org and Massive Black and All the Tutorials and Forums and All the rest!
It was you and your community thats responsible for changing the direction of my career from being a Fashion Designer to the Digital Artist that I'm now !

One small small way to thank is to Buy your Vids..... which I'm just downloading ... This is More because I feel soo soo indebted to you , and Andrew Jones, and Feng Zhu and Zhang and the entire community rather than the real need for the tutorial. I know I'll end up learning more from your videos than I'll ever learn from any Long term college courses or years of working experience.

Can't wait for the Download to finish! I Love painting Human Potraits and wanna learn more from mavericks like you ,Jason and Zhang.

Thanks, and in Hindi, BAHUT BAHUT DHANYA VAAD !

I enjoyed this and was pretty informative.

I'm kinda disappointed that there is no hi-res/psd of Portrait Caucasian Female 7_image_jpg though.

The feeling of light is a bit...it could use some adjustment. try playing in the levels in pshop and see if you can capture the value range of light and shadow better. You may want to also try some reflect light...anything to help with the feeling of luminosity. It is almost like the light is the wrong value for the shadow strength...if that makes sense...

The other thing to pay attention to is the feeling of life and soul. look at her entire face at once..and read emotion..dont look at the separate parts..look at the whole thing...what does that feel like inside? If you cant quite feel something from it then adjust based on how you would like it to feel..how you would like people to see her mood to be. Also the forward eye seems a bit dark compared to the far off eye..great move on atmospheric perspective though..just dont be afraid to put dark darks in the background too...can always soften them down with edge play for atmosphere to balance it out.

Hey Jason or anyone who has seen the video,

I know that the artist is using Photoshop, but would this video be useful to people working traditionally as well? Is it predominately about using layers, brushes. and stuff like that or does he speak about using lighting, mood, and anatomy type stuff that's useful for anyone? Thanks,

    John

Definitely. I don't have a wacom tablet at the moment since I'd given it to my younger brothers, but it was highly relevant to methods in general. Jason speaks about lighting, mood, and head structures rather than Photoshop techniques. This is usually how most of the demos are. There's always something to get out of it more than just program techniques. Either way, it's also, in my opinion, highly inspirational, so there's more to gain from it than just education.

    jiward -

The info Jason gives throughout is of a "fine arts" background, focusing on canons of portraiture and some art history. You would benefit greatly of this as a traditional artist imo... BUT if you want to wait, Coro has somthing gewd in the editing room it seems his vid about Portrait painting (trad) should be out soon ^^

Zhang Lu (? - 216) was a warlord during the Three Kingdoms era of China. After his grandfather, and then father, he was the third leader of the Celestial Masters, a religious group. He controlled a state in the Hanzhong region, which he had named Han'ning (漢寧) until 215, when he surrendered to Cao Cao, who he would serve until his death one year later.

    or

Zhang Lu (Chang Lu, traditional: 張路, simplified: 张路); ca. (1464-1538 ) was a Chinese landscape painter during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).

Zhang was born in Kaifeng in the Henan province[1] . Zhang painted landscapes and human figures in a free and uninhibited style.

Thanks, Jason and Zhanglu. You both are my inspiration and teachers.

Here's my old work. Done in 1 hour with pencil and Photoshop. I hope, these lessons will improve my knowledge.

Thanks for the crits, Jason! Helpful and spot-on. Rather than try to fix that one up, I worked on another one. Slowly getting towards those 10 portraits.

I finally found time to watch this, in the wee hours last night.
It has solid information for artists of every skill level. I personally found it helpful to watch the traditionally trained ZhangLu, as he painted the most beautiful pictures in digital form. I did not expect the valuable information regarding exploration of the subject’s inner world, since it is not discussed nearly enough and perhaps many artists miss the importance of this step when creating figures from imagination. There are also fine tips on being an artist. Jason is easy on the ears and the soundtrack choices were perfect. Thank you.

One thing I noted (looking at a lot of these pieces) but I don't remember specifically mentioned but implied when he mentioned studying Sargent is that I think a lot of people should also look up articles on edges and edge control. While simple observation of real objects help, one thing I noted with Zhanglu's works is a very practiced and designed sense of edge control.

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913 was by Elwell that talked about that practice. So not only keep in mind Jason's lecture, but using this to understand when you paint will help your overall piece too.

Look at Zhanglu's pieces and look at the articles on edges...why did Zhanglu make a hard edge in some places, softer in others? What effect did it have on your eyes, what did it do to the personality of the character he designed?
