    sketc[7|7|10]hbook

    Hello,

I had a sketchbook thread here last year, but I wanted a fresh start...I recently finished art school and came back here because I want to work on my skills. I have a lot more ideas now that I want to get down now...

    Thanks for looking!

**I do not post in this sketchbook anymore, please visit my sketchbook over at CGhub if you would like to see recent work. Thanks!

Your life drawing looks really good, keep up with those studies. The character sketch looks a little disproportionate. I think it's his legs, they seem a little short. Other then that it's a cool design.

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. I like what you've got going here. I really like that figure drawing 2 images up, that turned out really nice. I dont have any crits really, but just to keep updating and flesh this sketchbook out. Cheers'

The Original [E] - Thank you, and yes his legs are too short...I've since fixed the drawing but haven't scanned it yet :/

    ArtZealot - Thanks man!

Krato - yea that drawing is completely disproportionate...makes me angry I didn't notice it right away.

Samuel Gray - The use of light is something I'm always trying to get better at..I'm looking at alot of Caravaggio and baroque artists right now, really want to get better at values and use of light. Thanks for stopping by!

    darknight - Thanks! :]

I feel bad for not having been able to update sooner this week...been pretty busy recently with a new job

Here's how the last piece I was working on turned out, as well as a digi sketch of an alien I did one night, and a sketch of some kind of crazy vampire dwarf thing...I dunno.

very nice works mate.I see your values are improving.Keep pushing them more and maybe play a little with the variety of width of some outlines in the rendered ones.Keep up the good work!!!

xxPurple Nugxx - you just have to keep working to get better at it, I can't always get down my ideas as easily as I would like, but the more you draw the better you get at it. Thanks for stopping by man

    Ostroponis - thank you

kingkostas - thanks, and I will! you're not the first person to have told me about paying attention to my line width and edges..I think now that I am starting to get back into working in my sketchbook I will work on line variety as much as possible. cheers mate

don't have much of an update today...just some digital sketches. I'll have sketchbook drawings up soon hopefully!

    *updated

Great sketches. Now if you render them just think that not every edge need to end with the same width of outline (or i must say when render there may be no outlines actually, because you are rendering everything. So a "outline" can be produced by neihbor contrast values if needed

    keep it up

Nice work dude, at this point I still like your traditional sketchbook sketches better than your digital stuff, but keep pushing it! I think in those digital sketches you should try pushing values near a focal point as soon as you start. Having good contrast from the beginning really helps the process. Looking forward to seeing you improve and seeing those sketchbook drawings!

kingkostas - thanks for the advice, I'm going to try my best to make sure I start delineating edges using values rather than line...this is something I've noticed recently and I know I need to work on it

    VanDog - thanks!

Kambei Shimada - thanks for the support!

Jasper - I will take your advice about pushing values towards a focal point... and will post the sketches soon. Thanks man!

Ok so I am taking the one sketch from the last post and taking it further...for now I am just figuring out the values before I get into color. I did a second version with some slight changes, but I think I like the first better..

the first character looks good, the shield on the second version is really low though.. the shield is controlled by the hand and the forearm, so the center of the shield should be moved up so the straps can fit on the forearm. look up some shield refs so you can hopefully understand what im saying. note the strap for the hand and forearm.

Cool character designs, I really like the brushwork on the portrait in post #8, nice and loose with cool texture, should definetly get that goin in your character designs.

Krato - I decided in the end not to go with the shield on this character design, but you're right about the shield...I found a great site with a bunch of medieval reenactment photos that have great reference of people using shields though, here's the link : http://www.oook.cz/kolin/ . Should be useful in the future!

corza334 - thanks dude! and yes I enjoy doing the loose stuff...still experimenting with textures at the moment..I've only just recently started using texture brushes, for the longest time I just used only a couple brushes.

Gloominati - hmm yea I might go back to that portrait sometime, since you liked it :] thanks for stopping by man.

Ivan Turcin - thanks for the kind words, still have so much to learn though!

MattGamer - thanks Matt! I will try my best to update more

Here's an update on the character design. I got rid of the tonality in the background because I think it might help me to work on getting the values right. Still working on the values before I move into color..

aaaand here's a mountain landscape that I just started

I've been getting nothing but crap in my sketchbook the past week...sigh

here are some older sketches though.

whee loving your sketchbook pages. :] and on your character... a pure white background will change how you view the values than if you have a mid-grey background. it all depends on what you want to start with and to just go from there. the more you make the more you will understand what your doing. haha simple obvious advice but sometimes i neglect to understand it. ;] go go go!! :]
