Excerpt from the VANITY FAIR article "Out of the Shadows and Into the Limelight", April 17th, 2137:

"... it's no wonder such a historical figure would grow wise, not weary, of the culture that had so willingly embraced, and at the same time loathed, the very idea of him. In front of the blind eyes of the public The Carpathia Towers sprung up in what still remained the pinnacle of decadence in the United States, New Los Angeles. His so-called "coming-out" gala trumped the Election Night victory, and it's no wonder. People were practically electing him to the position before the actual President had a chance to take the seat. The very idea that what was once a cash-cow for Hollywood was a real and very "alive" figure swept a nation primed for his type of eager hedonism and millions flocked to the deco edifice he had constructed to welcome them..."

Chaosrocksyou and your family are in my prayers,

kevin mayle Definitly thats a draculas castle type thing, I think you need to make
the castle pop out from the bg a little, and maybe experiment a little with your pallet.
    Awesome Envirement keep it up!

revenebo I really like that you went for Interior, you totally pulled it off too.
Dracula's silhouette with that big shadow casting is really cool

NicHolS Your structure is really good, the village in the foreground is well done.
I think what would help this be Dracula's castle is the color of the castle, white and red
doesn't seem Dracula enough to me, even with the bats. Really Impressed man, question? how long do you spend on a environment with Krome studios?

Duq this looks pretty good, I like the way you worked out the lighting with clean shapes on the castle, this is a good painting. I think the overuse of white in the reflection of the moonlight made it come off a bit stale and The lighting on the trees isn't reflecting the moon. Awesome awesome painting nice to have a draculas castle in the folio

fughi from yuggoth Nice to see some pencils! nice and scribbly, I see we have a little eye of sauron goin on, I think some reference material would help not to copy but it just helps. And I dont know if you have used a grid to figure out how things look falling into the distance but that would help as well. Nice one thanx for posting

Mark BotNice one !Blood moonvery gothiqe castle,I think the red moon would reflect a red light onto the castle, and I would like to see a splash of more color. Thanx for posting its awesome

tomonagaCool Stain glass! great job making the castle appear like your looking up at it as well I think The Main issue is the foliage needs more detail, and the jump from
detail on the castle to less detail as it gets pushed into the atmosphere is too quick, I think it should be more gradual, This is a great environment it says Gothic Dracula style all over it keep posting

Mishkin the first thing I thought was man Dracula castle isn't white, then I voted for it its just too cool, I don't know how you do it but keep doing it

MarzWelcome to Concept art! That piece is awesome, I like that style sooo much. very loose and cool.

PixelFish its neat, kinda cartoony, very nice castle design. I think its a bit to light, The effect of the stars in the sky could be done better, I have to put my face to the screen to see it, and there are too much, all in all this is a great piece you should be happy.

L0bo thats just nuts, I love your stone work ant those dog heads, great dracula design as well, I think the splatterd dark texture would be better just on the stone rather than the whole painting, and the moon would look better a sharp circle because it look kinda like an explosion. my first reaction was this guys got skills

korpehnnice! very dramatic, I like the sheer size of it its epic. I think the clouds could be better did you use ref. I you could use some harder edges as well, the angle makes me have to tilt my head too. overall this is amazing again I love the sheer size of it. the bigger the better

audit its goood, I liked your first one beeetterrr. This is awesome. how long did this take you? the texture on the sky, the lighting on the hill, the wolves everything your at a good place with your skills audit, i do have a crit the stone tendrils on the castle look a little messy, Your awesome Im grateful you participated Love your work!

Ros1hehe nice I like this composition with the death statues and the whole angle is great, with the bridge going to another part of the castle across the hill that is totally awesome, I think that the detail on the towers could be brought up a couple notches I mean design into it, not so much rendering, and I am not crazy about the tops of the towers either, overall you really made this a dramatic great envirement man!

arttorneykinda like a little sunday funnies comicI think even though its a comic I think the foliage and the landscape could be rendered better I think those guys use reference too.

arghmisfit coolnes! very spooky and glowy, nice design too. I think you might of gotten a itsy bit carried away with glow though great envirement man

Tonicwow you really up'd your game dude wonderful lighting on the stone, The lighting over all actually is good, I really like what you did with the sky, I think it is more like an illustrated action scene rather than a Dracula's castle environment though,
    still it passes very awesome.

    Darknightyour my hero,

GaiusI definitely voted for this one is just epic,,I think you should start seeing if you can sell fine art prints or giclee because allot of your stuff I would want on my wall man.one day I am going to ask for one actually

corrick space dracula awesome! The painting is amazing, great design, I honestly see nothing in it to tell me this is draculas castle however, yet if a movie or game made that design be draculas castle you would figure it out on your own eventually

    k. guys hope that helps keep up being awesome painters!

thanks mate, yeah i agree looking back now i wouldve/couldve done a lot more with this topic. being my first eow i really just did the bare bones to suss out how it all operates and everything...

as for how long we spend on an env, not long mate... sometimes a morning, usually a day. id be lucky to spend 2 days on a single task unless i was under the weather or feeling off... not sure if this is industry std but it means we pump out a lot of stuff

Wow ! what a round, I didnt post any finals, cause my work sucks but, it was a good experience for me to try to do some enviro, I will sure try to participate again the next rounds

    Anyway voted for :

Marz : Man beautifull piece, really love the mood in it, and the concept is very good too !
Gaius : Pfff... what can I say, the light, the colors, the view angle, the mood... Excellent work sir !
Corrick : Man, I miss to see your stuff, you should come more often on CA and start a SB ! Really like what you have done, cause it's the only one who is really different. And it works well

Well others who I might have voted for but I didnt :

NicHols : Man really nice, but maybe you could have push the concept a little further.
Mishkin : Awesome image, awesome castle, but I dont feel like it could be draculas castle.(completly subjectiv point of view )
Tonic : Nice mood, nice image, but actually I think maybe it would have been good if we had seen a little more of a castle.

    Great job everyone !

Great topic, great round, great entries. Thanks Chaos and thanks everybody for the comments!

kevin mayle nice otherworldly colors, the castle could need a little more detail. I think it's not easy to manage a backlit environment.

revenebo I must be less lazy, I must use references, I must make exercises and I must be more willing to go back on works and refine them once completed. I also should understand why my new monitor shows washed out colors.

nichols I think the village is the natural pendant to the castle and I see it as a stroke of genius composition-wise. I like the rendering (but you could have added a little atmospheric depth...).

Duq nice to see you in EoW! You've improved so much. I like what you did here, you handled the moonlight very well.

funghi from yuggoth as above said some reference to take inspiration from and a rough perspective grid (or an horizon line at least) could be of great help.

mark bot great spooky atmosphere (it reminds me of some Unreal Tournament scenario).

tomonaga I like the towering silhouette of the castle but the building itself asks for some detail more. The lighting is weird, it looks like the sun has just set and the moon is already high in the sky, I like it.

mishkin great rendering and design of the castle, nearly industrial-like.

Marz your first post on CA rocks, very dark! I like the "impressionist" style.

Pixelfish nice overall effect, did you use a 3D model as a base? Lighting could be pushed a little further.

Lobo you should work on sfx! I think the lighting and the winged creature shift the focus from the castle but the overall effect is great.

korpehn I like the atmosphere and overall effect. Some detail more could help.

audit Great, bur I preferred your first image! Looks like you're a Friedrich fan... me too.

Ros1 your first post on CA rocks too!! Great moonlit scene (some of the towers should be backlit but it doesn't really matter...). Hungry for more.

arttorney estabilishing a perspective grid, using references and painting in b&w could be of great help here.

arghmisfit dreamy and spooky at the same time... Love the lighting and the atmosphere.

Tonic even if the focus isn't on the castle itself I think the image describes the environment quite well... Love it.

darknight more castle! Its silhouette looks rather original, I'd like to see more of it.

gaius that rock... rocks! But I'd like to see more of the castle, it rocks too.

corrick the image is great but I think the topic asked for a more traditional setting. Anyway the fanged mouth on the facade is fantastic.

Neither stumped nor fearful, I have decided it is pointless for reasons that are best left unsaid.

It looks like tilting the horizon and making extreme one point perspective passing as three are the new lens flare. Did somebody put out a book recommending this or something? I'll make a note of it, anyway, for future reference.

Kevin Mayle- nice job. It was just a little too fuzzy for me.
Revenebo- voted for this although it seems strange that an apparent load bearing pillar should be hollow within this scale.
NicholS- voted for this. No complaints.
Dug- voted for this. atmospheric. Apparently you can get away with loose vegetation better than I. I can actually see that this one is pretty legit three point perspective. Some of the others dodged it by avoiding leading edge corners or else muffed it.
Fungi from Y.- I found it mildly derivative of Sauron's tower, though I like the flying saucer clouds.
Mark bot- Too dark for me. Lighting effects would help
Tomonaga- looks more like an evil church than a castle
Mishkin- Pretty good. Wish you could have laid off the tilting thing.
    Marz- more rendering please
Pixelfish- looks flat which lighting effects could have made better
Lobo- Dracula and a door. Where's the rest of the castle?
Korpehn- wins the horizon tilting contest
    audit- unidentifiable as a castle
Ros1- Can't really figure out here whether this is pure extreme one point perspective or there is some horizon tilting going on.
    arghmisfit- tilt, fuzz
tonic- for a castle interior, there is a decided lack of bounding walls
Darknight- Just a little too loose and there is not a distinct foreground, middle ground, and background
Gaius- looked and looked but can't see a castle
Corrick- text is the only thing that makes this have anything to do with Dracula's Castle. Regrettably, the text also expressly repudiates the "Transylvania" part of the assignment.
