    Help Eugie Grow!

    Hey Guys this is a sketchbook I am starting with my friend Kevin enjoy.

    Here's how I usually blow off steam and loosen up;

    I have a bunch of Bridgeman's stuff I want to post but I will hold off on that, (I don't really have the time to scan a crapload of pages.)
    Anyhow I need to work on my animation project here's the main character;
    Yea her left leg is really off, crits and comments are very welcomed as long as you are telling it to me straight. The harsher the better (I am a Maso.. Jk) seriously though let me know.

    So, I decided to use the medium water color for the my animation background. Unfortunately I really don't have much experience with water color, my teacher told me it's a lot like tsumi ink which i really enjoy to use. Anyhow im learning from this book "You Can Paint Water Colors," by; Alwyn Crawshaw, it is insanely insightful and I recommend it for anyone beginning to learn water colors. Anyhow after a couple of hours of beginners studies, I figured I try to do a little piece that I really didn't plan it just came out sporadically. Oh and as a bonus here are some sunset pics from my balcony, it's the only good thing about this crummy apartment.

    Spent like 25-30 minutes on this, after reading some of Henry Yan's techniques and tips I was pretty antsy to draw. Anyhow, this is Claudio from my favorite band Coheed and Cambria yea his hair is fucken crazy.

    Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.

    Nice work. The biggest problem with your character's legs, or at least the one that jumps out at me, is that her right calf seems too small. Also, her hand looks really big, it's bigger than her head.

    Keep it up!

    This is interesting
    nice little witch you got there, but either with huge hands, or a small head :p. I'd love to see the broom finished because i like the concept of the smile on it.
    Nice watercolor! Thanks for the book reference, I was looking for something like it ! Tho the sun and clouds are still a bit messy.
    The back hand of your frog (the colored one) looks really weird. I'd say it's too big... Anyways good work, keep it up

    GMC - thanks man for the advice, yea the huge hands were something I just felt like adding. But I guess it is distracting oh well.
    Wanna- Haha yea, tbh I didn't have any ideas in mind when I was using the water colors, I was just testing the techniques I learned from the book. In the near future I will post some real watercolors. Man I am dead tired got like 2 hours of sleep and went to NYC to register for Art student league classes, unfortunately the classes I wanted to take were unavailable, early bird gets the worm. However, that's okay I took a different life drawing class under another instructor who looked promising.

    Here's a mini update on the same character, and a couple of character designs. Any crits would be much appreciated thanks.

    Nice studies there, both the faces and the neck-torso update.
    Some nice characters in post #9, but the last one is a bit screwed anatomically. Her boobs seem wrong to me, they are either too much to the right or a bit too big :p
    Keep up the good work! 0.0

    Small update, been getting frustrated lately (which is good I suppose since I am challenging myself) whenever i dive into a anatomy book my urge to copy is impossible to control. So I really don't know if I am actually learning anything from the studying. So I figured I have to go back to basics and I am trying the Vilppu method. I didn't have much time today cause of work but here's a couple of sketches for the first lesson. PS sorry for boring you guys with this ordinary stuff. Oh yea thanks wanna for the crit yea you're right. One more thing Kevin should be posting sometime after may 14, he is still at school.

    Hmmm not bad, tho I'd try to work of the lines there. Lines less broken. you might want to try some cleaner lines to see the results (I'm doing the same as you are btw =P)

    I was practicing the first lesson still of Vilppus technique today and I gotta say it pissed the crap out of me. It seemed that the more I thought about the pose I wanted the more impossible it was to draw, even to just get the gesture in stick figures I couldn't do it. So after 1-2 hours of frustration, I put on some Bobby Chiu podcasts to relax and started to draw on my newsprint paper which I always keep on my desks. I just drew scribbles and sculpted the forms out whatever I saw, I noticed the more I did this the more I understood what Vilppu was trying to teach. I guess in a way this was a epiphany for me, sorry for the terrible pix but here's what I ended up with.

    Hi guys, Kevin here! Just got back from school and I'm now ready to join in on this thread. Here are a few of my sketches. They may not be as studious or realistic as Eugene's are, but I don't think you guys care about that too much. Please feel free to critique my work as constructively and mercilessly as you want. ^_^

    My mom's b-day is coming very soon so I thought I would paint her something in water color as a present (yay you guys get to finally see some color soon, not that it really excites anyone). I decided to do a couple of water color paintings (depending if I have more time I will do more) here's the line work for them, any crits would be very appreciated thx.

    Yea so photobucket decided to stop being down finally, so I can get to posting more stuff. Here's the finished water color pieces that I made for my mom, unfortunately I had only 2 days to learn how to use the medium and paint them. Luckily my mom really liked them so I am glad, I definitely am going to do more in the near future. I was also watching breaking bad (awesome show) so I tried to memorize some poses and draw them quickly onto my sketchbook, I guess they came out decently. Here's some more vilppu imagination stuff, yea I know I am a messy drawer (yea also my scanner decided to scan the stuff on the back of the sketchbook pages too since I draw on both front and back to save paper). It is also very hard to draw without reference, even if I am just using basic shapes. I started to get the hang of it after a while, and also took less time around 10-30 secs each.

    Hey, Eugene! This is Ann, Kev's sister.

    I think your progress is coming along. Watercolor needs a lot of experimentation, so have fun playing around with it. Certain colors stain, which can be handy in some situations and you can paint wet-on-wet, dry brush, or wet-on-dry to achieve different effects. One of the techniques that I found helpful was to learn how to glaze one transparent color on top of another after the previous color is dry, because not only does it give you that luminous quality but your color depth is richer. This also applies to inks and other wet media.

    Interesting to see how Vilippu works. Your gestures and poses are coming along well and I like the few where you try to get across a bit of storytelling (guy decking another one). I'll just keep it up and let the lines be natural, as you are doing. I'll be keeping tabs on this SB, so see ya around!

    Thanks for the great tips, yea I should have used more of those methods. That was probably the first thing I learned from the book which I didn't abuse enough. Oh wells there's always next time.

    Going to take a break from Vilppu for a while, I feel that I need to have a deeper understanding on the human anatomy. So, I decided to go back to Loomis again, I didn't really get a firm grasp on constructing the human head which is so important, so I am dedicating the rest of this month to it. Anyhow, enough chit chat.

    yea I messed up on the old dude and probably everyone else too

    Interesting studies man. concerning the last post, the first set of heads is, I must say, failed. Unless it is the purpose of the exercise. For the second one, the final head seems to be a bit off concerning proportions. Careful for perspective with the last post. Good you're working on studies tho, keep up the good job man
