Nicely done man, this latch batch is showing good things. Although my monitor is shit contrast wise so I can't be sure, but I think that 1st value study is in need of soem darker darks, and some lighter lights. Currently it's all in the greys and has no focal, even just adding some contrast to the eyes or something I think will help. Also (and this is purely because of Jason Manley's words in the portraiture download) MAKE-UP!
I'd suggest maybe doing some pages of feature studies, mouths and eyes in particular, as you seem to be drawing pretty much the same ones everytime.
That last reffed painting is beautiful, the colours in particular. I think the only thing letting it down is the sketchy marks on her jawline. They work in the rest of the image and add a lot of life to it, but I think just cleaning up that edge, maybe a couple of others will add the cherry on top. I realize it's probably just a quick study but I really like it!

    Peace
    Dan

I love that you're rotating between referenced studies and sketches from imagination; that's totally the way to go. Just keep at it and you'll get there!

    Today was mostly about implementing
Seems like the female portraits got better

So I'll be shifting my focus to anatomy for now which is really lacking

Hey man u have some new cool stuff

Though on the selfportrait? the posistion of the ear is rly off, and that makes it look weird.
Remember the simple rules on the face, lowest point on the ear equals lowest point on the nose, and top of the ear is eyebrow..

On the pilot girl ,, the helmet shouldve been bigger and there needs to be a little more thought in the neck and shoulders.
I think the rule on that is that the wideness of the shoulders should be 2.5 heads?.. (could be wrong :X )

Anyway, all with all it rly cool and its always awsome to see someone work this hard
    So keep it up!

/\ What Roger said, but I think for females the shoulder width rule is 2 heads.

Great job on the TD piece Mark

Dam, youve really been keeping up the hard work. I think I saw a few more things. For the high key practice face in post 214, at that extreme angle from below it might help to make the lower lid a straight line and the upper line more curved. The straight line can help show overlap and the curved line can help show the roundness of the eye.

You already mention it, but I think your noses need some work. I actually made a note sheet a while ago that might help http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1241803411 . I also think you should curve the brow line a bit more.

It might also help to block in the planes of the face more, right now your features are just sort of floating in space.
    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=151539
    http://www.dhfa.net/Artiststatement2.html
    http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1432

I think your eyes are also a little off. It might help to study the eye socket and the planes that the eye sits in, to help with the shape of the eye. make sure to get the ellipses of the irises right, and dont feel like you always have to paint in the iris or the specular highlights. you might also want to vary your line weight more the upper lid is usually darker, it also seams like you tend to outline the eye a little bit.

Theirs also a neat exercise that you can do that I have been trying lately. First you take a photograph turn it to grayscale and then apply a posterize adjustment layer to 2 levels. Then copy the resulting shapes in pure black and white, repeat without the filter. you can also play around with different levels.

It goes a long way towards getting a quick read, likeness, separating light and shadow, and understanding the planes of the face. you can also use the adjustment layer on your originals to make sure that you can still recognize the faces in their abstract form (like that one post about the adjustment layer in my sketchbook, the face should still be recognizable after you apply the filter). You have already done something similar here http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1254087622
I am just suggesting to try it with reference, its a really good exercise.

hope this helps , keep it up

Right so these two days I was busy with shit like catching up on my sleep and movie queue, sparing some time to hang out with friends, a school field trip (which I couldn't skip ), my dad returning from abroad and lots of other bullshit excuses, I suck... I know

Expect me to return to the 12 hour routine tomorrow.

Those 'excuses' are called life dude. It will do you no good completely locking yourself away. Obviously study is important and you will need to make sacrifices to do this, but experiences are what shape us. So don't beat yourself up, use the times you're away from your art to bring something new to the table when you go back, and also for observing, which is an often overlooked but hugely important part of what makes an artist.
You may find that giving yourself a break every now and then allows you the time to process what you've been learning, which will help you improve.

    Peace
    Dan

I think you guys need to start taking some of these td images and pushing them further afterwards. That last one of yours has the makings of a really good illustration man. Do it! Nicely done on those faces too man, especially the tricky angle at the bottom, might want to have a look at eyes and eye structure a bit though, yours are looking a bit flat. Holler at me for the next TD!

Your movie scene paintings are really awesome! Don't worry so much about life getting in the way of doing your studies. As an artist you need life experiences to draw inspiration from too. It's a good thing to hang your with your friends sometimes.
