    Anatomy of the human head

    Hi guys,

As part of my effort to improve my drawing skills (which are almost none hehe) I have been watching some tutorials from Riven Phoenix, these are my last drawings on the human head, the one on the left was made following the instructions from the tutorial, the other i made it following the tutorial and also using a real picture to add some detail.

If someone can point out where I improve this Id really appreciate it.

    Thanks.

Things are kind of skewed overall. The space between the eyes should equal roughly one eye-width for normal humans, and the nose is off on the left picture. The angle of the teeth is also a bit too tilted, and the jawbones should poke out a bit more. The way the jawbone connects to the skull is also a bit iffy.

By the way...who's Riven Phoenix? He/she sounds a little bit iffy, but correct me if I'm wrong.

    A few thoughts:
    1) Both skulls have very angular eye sockets, rather than organic
    2) The cheek bones are angular and not in perspective
    3) some of the spots you've shaded are conflicting with others (cheek and mouth area)

Drawing an invented skull is good practice, no doubt. But get yourself a real skull and draw it if at all possible. It'll help you really see it from every angle. I'd also advise, if you can, to do a sculpture of a skull--it helped me a lot.

Let me know how you like Riven Phoenix's stuff... they seemed rather slow, to me. But maybe I'm just impatient.

One thing I noticed about your latest skull is that the eye sockets are not big enough for the actual eye to sit inside correctly. The eyes should lay at almost exactly the half-way point down the skull and right now your eye sockets end above that line.

Drop those down a little and the lower half of the face including the cavity for the nose will fall into better alignment as well.

Well since I dont have a real skull I used a 3d anatomy software to analyze it better, youll see in the attachment what I did with it and a quick sketch too. I hope Im at least moving forward.

Much better. Kudos to you for investigating the matter yourself with your 3D skull and applying what you learned.
