Well I finally got the push to start a sb here, mainly from MindCandyMan's phenomally inspiring sketchbook. I still have a long way to go as a very humble student and all the great art here, as well as MCM's thread is what inspires me and keeps me going.

So anyway I'll start this off...

I'm having some trouble getting the proportions of my objects to be right... today I made some progress establishing the link between planes and how light falls on a surface. I also realized that I could use existing parallel objects in a room to determine my eye level in that room. Why didn't I realize this sooner? silly me...

good sketching,u need to work more on the prespective,in the second sketck ,and give them more contrast maybe some shading in the backgroung ,just to make them pop up a bit,hope i helped

I attempted to do a more complex still-life today, mainly involving the dreaded ellipses and cylinders. To warm myself up I scribbled a very rough, loose mini-sketch of the setup so I can get a feel for the negative spaces and heights, and I think it helped greatly. I'm rather pleased with how the end result is although it was exhausting, and I do plan to study the values for this setup tomorrow.

Sad to say I did not do the final drawing with much construction, which I'm feeling a little guilty about As one can see I am in the habit of writing reminder notes on my own pages...

August 30 & 31, 2007
Blessed cows, I've been so busy with term starting that it's been 6 days since really drawing. Bad!!

Anyway, I don't have much that is glorious to look at I feel though that I am learning something from doing nasty pages of sketches. The first page is one of 10 pages of gestural drawings done over 2 hours in a semi-busy area. I thought it was the best out of all 10 because it took me a couple pages to warm up and slowly get used to trying to jot down the essence of people as fast as possible. I think the biggest thing I learned was to look for the dominant shape/angle first instead of starting with the head like I was doing at first.

The second page is me trying to understand human skulls and what they're made of, with a skull model and following along Bridgman's book. So far I've only drawing people without really understanding what's underneath the skin. The quashed little skull on the right of the 2nd page was amusing because I had the model in one hand and was looking at it without really paying attention to the paper while drawing.... I didn't know I was seated/angled wrongly to the drawing paper because when I turned it flat it looked like that. Ahh, optics.

September 01 & 02, 2007
September 1st was a miserable drawing day. It's one of those days where your brain just doesn't really want to focus on all the intellectual, academic stuff that I still need to make my drawings better. I started thinking I would just do some warmup sketches to begin with, but as time wore on and they showed no signs of improvement (this is a great way to see what has been ingrained and what hasn't) I decided to give up for the night and just draw really badly.

The first 2 pages are the result of that. I think subconsciously I wanted to see just how bad I could draw.

Today was very much better. I started out fresh and began by attempting to get my mind to eat the "think of masses and planes" thing.

Page 3 is drawn in order from left to right, top to bottom. The first two were alright. The third one something seemed to click, if only just for a little, and if I focused on visualizing the mass of what I was drawing in my head, I found that I usually got --closer-- to the line I wanted to reproduce. It wasn't perfect but it was an interesting thing.

The fourth one was ok, the fifth one I'm very pleased with even though it looks hella crude. So far, this has been the very closest I have come to understanding planes and values, in all my drawing life.

I am also finding that I love drawing skulls.

Phew, been a long while since posting here, but that's mainly due to school. Here are a bunch of drawings from figure drawing class.

These were all done on a big 18 by 24 sketchpad with the exception of the charcoal drawings which were done on D'arches paper. For some reason he really wanted us to use D'arches paper, I have no idea why.

I haven't used a big pad in forever and initially it was unwieldy, but I've grown to like it (still hate carting those things around though). The tall thin guy has a very odd face that I have a lot of difficulty trying to capture.

For the black bald guy he was fun to draw, being muscular and not atrophied and/or fat like a portion of models are. We drew him nude first and then he was clothed and placed in the same position so we could see where the cloth gathered and puckered at the points of tension, which was a very helpful exercise overall.

Then we moved into charcoal drawings; now I haven't done charcoal in over a year, and the last time I tried it I used charcoal pencils extensively and didn't really 'get messy' with it. The first drawing I did of the guy with the top hat turned out alright, something is wonky with his arms. I was trying to get familiar with the medium.

The last one I'm very happy with, the girl with the printed shirt and hat. There seems to be a vast difference of quality between the first drawing and this one, I don't know why. This last one I really took the time to try and pin the contours as accurately as I could.

Hey D. Nice sketchbook you got going here. I can sympathize with the perspective stuff, its a bugger until it 'clicks', lol keep it up and you'll get it soon enough. Nice skull sketches, good forms, good understanding. Now, try to let this knowledge effect your shading when you start 'drawing' faces. Keep it up dude :-)

One of my drawing instructors, Mr. Jewell, showed me some examples of gorgeous ink wash work and so I decided to give it a try. Here's a skull I painted with ink wash on cold press paper.

The other image is a generic guy sketch out of my head, in Corel Painter. I don't know why but I wanted to.

Messed around a bit with Alchemy today. It's so fun! Definitely an instant cure for artist's block, or to just relieve frustration...

This piece has got some Photoshop in it but most of it is from Alchemy.
