Decided to start my new sketchbook up today. Nothing extravagant, but here's my first entry in my new sketchbook.

I've decided to start a project, that has an end goal in sight. I bought a book called The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures. It's a 540 page book describing ALOT of monsters from legend and myth. There are no illustrations, only descriptions. I am starting from A and working my way to Z. This project is going to take me awhile, a long while. lol. My goal and hope is that by the end of the book, my skills we be improved enough that I might have enough talent to land a job making monsters concepts for the movie or gaming industry. That has always been my dream. And at 32 and nowhere in life, I am finally focused on realizing that dream.
So without further delay, we start in the A's with this work in progress. (I plan on finishing each one within my current abilities.):
A Bao A Qu
This strange creature originates on the Malay Peninsula.
Described as having many tentacles and a soft smooth skin, it waits for unwary pilgrims at the bottom of the Tower of Victory in Chitor. Pilgrims come to climb this tower, each level representing a further stage on the journey to enlightenment. As the pilgrim climbs, the creature grows stronger, changing color and shape, drawing the life force from the unsuspecting victim. Supposedly, the creature will only attain a final form, and be fully alive, when a pilgrim reaches the top of the tower.

Also, I plan on trying to do one of these daily, but will do other things in between occasionally, like figure studies in traditional media.

Shameless bump and obligatory self-pity moment...
I need crits and motivation to keep going. Is my artwork crappy? Semi-crappy? Craptastic? Somewhat decent? Good? Great? Childish? Crappy? Semi-crappy?
I need some direction, because I'm really struggling.
Working on this right now for a T-Shirt design for a friend.

No worries about the self pity. It happens. It's hard to stay motivated when progress can be slow. But hey, anybody that works hard on something is going to get better at it.
Right now I'd suggest working in sets. Rather than trying to pull everything from your imagination all at once, do a drawing completely from observation with elements you can use for an imagined piece. Once that's done jump right into what you wanted to make from your imagination. This will help build up a mental library of forms to use in all your later work. Let me know if that doesn't make sense.
Holy crap! I just saw that you have a cintiq. Now I'm all jealous.
Keep rockin.
Thank you Johanson. That helps me out quite a bit. I will try that out today and see how it goes. Yep, I have a Cintiq. Bought it a few months ago, because I like feeling like I'm painting on a digital canvas with digital paint. I love the thing. I sold some things so I could afford it. I did have it up for sale for awhile, when I hit one of my depressions, but decided I should keep it and push myself, rather than give up.

Another update on my buddy's T-Shirt design. I'm finding myself changing this guy alot. I'm having trouble getting depth and 3-dimensionality going on.
