Pixie totally ! i aim to have a couple finished out master studies done by the end of this page

il never draw on a blank sketchbook page again ! haha its too fun to paste a bunch of stuff in and mess around

so its been a whole folks !

heres a few sketch/study and a mono print i did at a print course im taking once a week, im learning a ton hopefully by the end il have ended up with a decent body of work


i need to get back in the flow , thanks all keep up the good work !

painting from a photo i took on my NYC trip back in December St Patrick's cathedral i believe

first the drawing now the under painting

going to work this one quite far

on a canvas thats quite big maybe 28 or 30 inches height

another print (mono print ) plexiglass plates ) abstract landscape just learning about the process

i like whats happening on the top half, learning a ton

water based ink im working with color next week then woodblock and coligraph in the next 7

Hey thanks for checkin out my sketchbook man! Your storytelling in your envior's are getting better, and I see what you were saying about color exploration. I'll definitely be getting my acrylic game up for real. I also like the photo with the great reflective ball you took. I think it has great artistic merit.

once i finish it out more with more concrete lines and color (still in the early stages right now )

try to keep the consistency going on your last piece, the top of the container is more round then the bottom. looks good though, try to make a smoother if you can and less grainy.

Granny here you go man first one is picking up some colors through light washes

second one is some heavier application of paint

from this point on il start working with oils on top now to keep the colors vibrant


this is a pretty small painting like 9 by 12 inches

the umber underpainting is giving a nice warmth

So is the underpainting acrylic? I have problems doing larger paintings with acrylic because if you mix a colour and finally get it right, get a glob on the board/canvas/paper, by the time you go back to you pallet the paint you mixed is 100% dry, or at least sticky. I've tried using retarders, but they don't help too much without really thinning out the paint. Different thicker mediums too. (They're fun to make 3D swirls and stuff though). I'm starting to think that you just have to put down layers like watercolours. My avatar was painting was pretty much different thicknesses of glazes, and it was around 12 x 16.

*sigh* maybe I'll gust have to get some oils....

Anyway, the painting's looking great! The one thing that bugs me is the water. Water is clear so it generally reflects the colour of the sky. Right now it's a bright blue, and the sky's a grey...

You're right, the underpainting really makes it nice and warm! It'll be neat to see how it turns out.

hey Pixie ! hope things are well... so right now im using acrylics yes, i work very fast and acrylics lend them selves to that IMO

as far as mixing colors if i want to keep working around a specific color i mix a bunch of it in to one big glob then sort of have a little tree branches of that color (a cooler and warmer beside it sort of thing ) big globs dont dry as fast

the only thing i mix with my acrylics is water (i used to use matte gel way back but it doesnt really do that much for me )

oils i find are very nice to finish up a painting because the light shines through the pigment hits whats behind and then comes back to your eyes where for the most part arcrylics stop the light right at that coat (acrylics are fast drying so when you just want to get paint down and start playing with your color to find the right ones you have a lot of room to move )

i find the more you mix colors the easier it is to mix the ones you want just like lines the more you do it the easier it is to weed out the ones you dont want.
so after a while it gets a lot easier to just mix up the same color you were using again its very important especially if you're working on super large paintings for any period of time (like that painting of the cathedral im working on right now is like 28'/34 or somethin )

as for the blue its mostly just supposed to sit underneath the color i will be adding after with my oils because the shadows in the water were a very cool grey/blue some very vibrant (Warm light / cool shadows ) hopefully it will clear up a bit when i work the painting more

Thanks for that post! I did an acrylic over the weekend and tried to keep it thicker which worked to a limited extent.

I disagree on the point that acrylics don't let the light reflect of of lower layers. Acrylics are very good at letting light through, depending how you work with them. Part of what affects that is the paint itself (yellows for example are nearly impossible to get a 100% opacity with unless you put a very thick wad on -- actually if you go to the Golden website they'll give you a rating on all of their paints for this as well as other values) and how thickly you put it down. If you're mixing a lot of white into something to get it lighter, then it goes a bit chalky because white is generally a very opaque paint, as opposed to putting down thinner layers. You could achieve a lighter colour by making the paint thinner too.

Pixie hey pixie ! thanks for the follow up though im sorry to say science backs me up as far as how oils let the light through better... something to do with the pigment load and Oils medium VS Acrylic (ive had many old expierenced amazing artists tell me this and also about 8 months of intense trial & error )

im not saying acrylics cant have that vibrancy and luminosity (those are mostly noticeable when your colors are showing through the colors behind them getting to the canvas and back ) but for the most part oils just lend them selves to such things (in the department ) also when oils dry its more like they "harden" so they retain the color almost as if you just put it on wet

i guess i was being a little blunt on the point bashing acrylics i hope this post clears it up a bit ( i happen to know this Artist (In real life) CA is real life i just meant in every day life haha not on interwebs ) he actually uses quite watered down acrylics in thin glazes to build up his paintings giving an Oily very luminous look hes a pretty prominant Canadian Painter right now http://www.alanbateman.com/ )

(i live near a printmaker " Bob Hainstock " google him super wicked work just blows me away ) he has been kind enough to have me over to his studio let me use his press and give me a bit of guidance .... )

BlackDelphin i was worried you had left us forever when you hadnt come on for a month its great to see you posting again ! haha yeah pretty much he was that kind of nuts for sure LOL !

PxieTrick get in touch with a few local galleries help out if you can thats how i started to get to know people in the scene helping move stuff talking to as many artists as i can pretty much !

so im pretty pumped about Collagraph printing if you dont know pretty much you build the Plate (the plate is the thing you ink and put through the press ) with lots of gesso/ modeling paste and glues with paper junk and whatever else you can inking is a lot different then monotypes or woodblock because there is a lot more texture to work with

im going to make a few more plates soon and hopefully pull a bunch more prints in march

these were just to fool around and learn a lot pretty much Collagraph printing lends it self more to abstraction and texture

also if you guys wanted to use these for texture brushes haha go right ahead hit me up with a PM if you want...i'll send you a high res file

i know im goin all FINE ARTSY on y'all but this is where i feel i am learning the most i could see concept art as a job down the road but right now i feel like its a good time to explore


these paticular prints are probably around 14-18 inches at the longest so quite a decent size
