Hi everyone,

my name is Sebastian, I am 21 years old and I live in germany.

At the moment I don't know what to say here, but to show you some of my latest studies. I really want draw better so I decided to work my way through the loomis books to get some fundamental knowledge of anatomy, I ignored until now ...

So here we go.
I hope i did nothing wrong with uploading the pics...

The studies are looking good - keep doing those! I can also recommend all books by Bridgeman.

The self portraits are also a great way to learn, and the last one look pretty good considering you have just started taking art "seriously".

I had a busy weekend and I didn't find the time for the selfportrait ... so I made up for it tonight

I tried to use only line and contour, no shading .... it really sucks, there are no similarities .... I had one hour (cause I have to go to bed now), and that surely wasn't enough time for me ...

Daemien Thanks for your comment sometimes I do not have the heart to sketch what I have in my imagination, because I am afraid that I will "destroy it" ... I hate that.... I am sure that I just SHOULD draw that stuff, I just can learn.

DeeLock Thank you! Yeah I really want to go through the whole two books and learn all that anatomy stuff! I havent done so much yet, but I already have a better feeling sometimes

One weeks stuff?! ok

So here are some quick poses from posemaniacs and some studies and other sketches.
I used some Auto-Contrast filters in photoshop, just to play a bit with the line, cause the scanned things doesnt look good for me ...

With the portraits I really don't get it, when I think now it looks quite fine and view the result in the mirror it looks so "displaced" ... I might check the next longer selfportrait in the mirror while it is in progrtess perhaps, not when it is finished ^^ And I really have to take more time ..

And next days I want to work harder.

Nice sketchbook - one can really see how you improove.. Just compare your latest slefportrait with the one in your first post..
And also keep studies coming - and always remember not only to copy the pictures, but try to think _why_ the lines are how they are, and what structure is discribed with the lines. I hope to see more stuff of yours soon..

some of ur ppl profiles look a little like superman around christmas, the large chest and relatively smaller hips. try to draw some varied body types - really thin, medium and extra chunky. keep up the good work guy

So this week again no update ... and I hate me for that. But I was quite busy with an acryl painting I did for a friends birthday. I do not have a photo at the moment, but I will take a picture soon and post then.


Apart from that I did some posemaniac studies (about 100 1 min and 30 5 min)
Here are 5 sheets

But the new selfportrait sucks again I started when I had not enough time ... and then I rush and loose motivation and then this happens ..... so the next ones must be better again

You did a lot of pose maniacs, huh?
Some of them allready look very good for beeing just quick pose sketches!

And do not worry about your portrait.. Art needs time.. Esecially shading! Try to work with much smaller strikes on your shadings, and try to use many types of pencils, to get a good variation of tones ;D
You dont always have to make every drawing in one sitting, so if you do not have enough time to make your shading properly its nothing bad if you just do your shading as good as you can as long as you can.. then stop drawing and restart when you have enough time to do more ;D
Of course this is always quite difficult when your drawing from life, like self portraits, because your position and the light will always be a little different.. but then your just learning.. you don't need to finish your drawings at all cost, just try to take your time and learn as much out of your studies as you can

Hey Demodeus: Thanks for your comment and tips. I think that I will try using some different pencils with the next selfportait. But I was told by my teacher in school or i read in a magazin or book not to use too many different materials in a study ... so I tried to work with one medium in all my studies.
I really like to experiment with combining diofferent mediums in my sketchbook, and there can be nice results, but with my studies I tried one medium, particularly one pencil. But using different pencils in order to improve shading and line quality sounds worth a try thank you.
And yeah, ypu must be correct: Often it would be better to take the tiome for a drawing and do it in more session. I tend to be a little (or little more) impatient... and for that selfortrait I wanted to finish at the weekend ... so I had to finish it fast monday night But next time I must begin earlier! Than I can take more time! Thanks for that good kick in the pants





Today I was in the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, sketching some cars etc Have a new sketchbook, the old one is full juheeeeeeeeee!

And some studies, now I really have to work with that model to get the basic I think.I must work not rush I think ...

It is amazing to see your work improve so much over this thread. Having said that, I'm kinda new here and am impressed pretty quick I guess ;p

Anyway, I noticed that when you use your books there is always good use of perspective, but as soon as you put it in practice the drawings tend to look flat and many times you even tend to try from a frontal view, which is boring and well.. flat.

But you're on a good way, keep on it!

Edit: My teachers kept on telling us to use the book "How to draw the Marvel way" by Stan Lee if it comes to perspective drawing (and other things as well of course). I also like the book "Drawing Force" by Michael D. Mattesi, it's a total different look on how to draw figures.

nurraymjo thanks for you comment. i really would like to show you some finished works ... but ther is no recent -.- I don't know why, but I never know what to develop further and so I only try to learn and sketch ....

Draco Dralion Hey, thank you for that motivation! Though I am not that impressed of my progress as you seem to be (I must work harder ... I didn't reach all the goals I wanted last week ) I am happy to hear that.
Yeah I think that at the moment it's of course easier to use front view (especially when I do a selfportrait). There I can measure quite easier, and I hope to learn so what the proportians are ... but I want to make more stuff in perspective from now on. Thanks for pushing me.



So here are some recent studies ... after all I think that I have learned a lot in the last weeks and that I better know the proportion and see more the mistakes I do ... but this is the beginning. Now I have to use that new knowledge and do more own stuff not just copying those studies ....

Ah and I missed this weekend's selfportreit ... that bugs me -.- but I'll start it tonight and finish this week, that at the weekend I can do number 9 as I should.

I measured so many times and it should be correct but it isn't ... my face isn't taht wide ... and my nose is not as well ....
next time I must consider my "feelings?", "own imopression?" too, not only the measurements ....

hey eiki you're progressing really nicely! measuring is good and all but i say follow your gut on the next sp. I see that you're simplifying a lot of shapes to how you think they look, so don't be afraid to draw something like a noes as a combination of unusual and haphazard lines rather than the expected "nose" shape. keep it up!!

Hey papervampire Big thanks for the tips! I didn't notice that while studying proportion stuff and measuring quite much and often, that I drifted away an simplified the "objects" I tried hard to place correct ... But I see, you must be correct! So thanks for showing me that

The 9th portrait is nearly finished (when I am home again and have time I'll finish this (again some days to late argh)
But with the 10th portrait this weekend I want to try to look closer and really paint what I see. I want to learn that!

Could someone tell me what is correct and what is wrong with that perspective study I attached? I really am uncertain about perspective ... Did so many other studies as well, but I only know the basic things to be correct ... and the more different things as these are always confusing.

those hands are really nice.. solid.. Your constructing them very nicely. Are they from photos? The forshortening is great.
