Hello all! New here. Name's Angela I have lurked and drooled over Conceptart.org for literally years without getting up the courage to post (pathetic, yes...) until I made myself go to Reverie and got kicked in the bum hard enough to make me post something finally. So here is a start!

*MOVED POST* A few stages of a recent expression study of a girl using an excellent photo book as reference, two old figure studies from photo reference, a super old sketch I did for a CHOW that I admittedly never had the guts to finish or submit (CHOW99 - Herald of the queen), some sketches from life that I did at Reverie, and current CHOW that I am actually working on and hoping not to pansy out (exciting!)


Great to finally get on here! I look forward to getting to know many of you much better, I am a big fan of a lot of people's work that I see round and about these parts



Well I finally finished a CHOW! Which is really exciting Not really pleased with the results at the moment, but a small triumph in and of itself! I was much happier with the ridiculousness of the facial expression before I started rendering it. I made a lot of silly amateur mistakes and got frustrated with myself for being so rusty, but all in all it was good practice and that's what it's all about, right? And since I forgot to say it last time, comments and critiques are WOOONNNNDERFUL and are always very appreciated, as I am on a quest for improvement

Sketches using a beautiful Superman Comic as reference - original images and copyrights belong to DC. Last one is of a chick who didn't have hair but I tried my hand at inventing some... meh.....

Thanks for the critique in the chow section , i see your stuff is coming along nice , following a more stylized representation of the body. You shouldef used in your chow the same technique of work you use in your drawings , they look good. I noticed that the smile ,on the woman's face from chow illustration , is not quit a sign of happiness and its unnatural , you should study some face muscles under different expressions , this is one of the hardest things to draw , a good smile ... take care.

Giorge - Thanks for looking! And yeah, I'll definitely be doing more expression studies. It's something I'm very interested in and hoping to get a lot better at.

Here is a quick sketch I did from imagination tonight, actually in a friend's sketchbook... Been looking at a lot of Mucha and Arthur Rackham lately (Sorry for the poor image quality, all I had on hand was a webcam to take a picture of it)

So I started this digital portrait painting of Mandy Moore from photo reference FOREVER ago and never finished it. Well tonight I found it! And decided what the heck, might as well get this thing done (if you go find the reference, yeah i know the hair's all screwed up...). Also a 3 hour study of a Craig Mullins piece that is from about the same time long ago that I finally touched up my mistakes on a bit tonight (let me know if it is not okay to post studies of other artists' stuff...). MAN I need to get back in practice. Workin' on it *Must do more digital painting again*

A "speedpaint" I did tonight. Though it wasn't as speedy as I'd hoped... wanted to make it in an hour and it took three. But it is my first in months so it's the beginning of getting into good habits I hope

Painted from photo reference by an awesome food photographer named Michael Ray from his website... I hope that's okay... I don't really know how to go about these things yet.... Also, definitely looking for critique

That last painting is pretty good form wise, but the color that you picked for her skin is a bit too yellow/orange I think (Might just be my monitor)

Might want to get some more pink in there.

Your figure studies are good as well, though I think you could work on anatomy and proportions a little bit more. And perspective as well.

You say your speed paint of Jenny McCarthy took longer than intended - just out of curiousity, what sort of time frame were you aiming for?

If I start a speed paint, I never realise how long it has taken (I should probably time it), I just end up calling it a 'speed' paint if I do it within one session. That is still probably like an hour... (I'll have to try a bit quicker).

Your studies are very photo realistic and detailed. Why not try to do a still life from life, just an apple on your desk. I'm also curious about your digital painting methods.

Hi again Angela! Those last 2 studies are looking really good, love the use of the color. The one thing I'm starting to notice is that you need to work on edge control- the tomatoes largely look airbrushed except for the green parts. It draws those areas into focus, which is great, but you may want to do it a bit more subtly (I haven't seen the source photo though). The Jenny McCarthy one just has inconsistent edges- they're too hard all over the body, too soft on the face in comparison, her left leg is too soft, and then the ground and background are barely registering at all. Check out Elwell's edge tutorial on the site, it helps out a lot on the subject.

I did notice your Dallas sketches before as well, bummer that I missed you there. Maybe next year .

Hey, so glad you got a sketchbook finally! Yeah! Keep posting please. All I can say is on your pencils to watch your proportions. I notice the left shoulder of the reclining woman seems kind of wonky, so just be careful of that kind of stuff. Glad to see you got to go to Reverie - I wanted to go so baaaad!

Wow, very neat indeed! Those face studies looks great, and so does your pencil stuff, looks like you got the female body down pretty well. I miss some more men though, since that herald is so old, I'm kind of thinking you're better than that male anatomy wise now
