    Refining that figure...
I do need to remember to not push so far ahead with the figures before I have the background more figured out though.

And more on that figure... I need to go back and work on everything else now, I think.

Cool WIP- I like they way you are going about drawing. Do more life work though if you can, and try to use more value. Darker darks and lighter lights will make things more powerful-if you use it right. Keep it up!

Painting from life is something I haven't done much of. I've known I need to push my values more for a while - I wonder how much of this is due to not taking enough risks... anyway, if painting from life will help with that (and I don't see how it could hurt) I'll have to give it a try.

Some work on the foreground and lighting

Got rid of the shooting star (which was drawing too much attention) and replaced it with clouds. Also some work on the caster and the foreground.

The shooting star could work if you made it smaller and lighter. Remember that stars are not actually very bright when seen from the earth. They often barely show up in regular photography because they are so soft compared to the light that we're used to.

If you decide to keep the clouds you just added, it might be better to soften them up so they're more like whispy stratus clouds.

Softened the clouds up a bit - I think I like them better than the shooting star. Also did a major change of the mage's hair and played with the fighter a bit.

you seem to have a pretty good hold on things, your anatomy visibly improves throughout that long picture your working on, and you've clearly got lots of patience, which is a prerequisite in art ;p but your values seem to be all mushed together. If you're just working in greyscale, forget about starting with a 50% grey background and work straight wtih black on white to develop greater contrast. Also, remember atmospheric perspective - values should fade in the background and have less contrast. in that big picture with the spell caster, the background seems to be just alittle too dark and detailed to me. By fading it out and establishing a sharper silhouette of the characters against the background, you'll make it much more dynamic and focus more on the characters.

I tried working from a white background - which isn't exactly what you were saying, I realize now. I'll have to try working in black and white next time - or is it just that I should start from the extremes and work toward the middle instead of the other way? I'll have to play with the atmospheric perspective next time I work on the ongoing piece...

    Anyway, here's today's:

Quick (`1 hour) painting of that bear fight - I need to do more studies for the bear.
