tandy1000: I often feel displaced with digital, there's something so marvelous about traditional mediums that just can't be emulated, like you said, and it's not a look but rather the feel of the materials, pushing paint together, smudging stippling scraping. I'm lucky to have both to use though Thanks for the comment

rustik kid: Hi, I'm not sure which orange red colour you mean exactly, on my oil palette I use yellow ochres, a (fake) vermilion, and some sort of earthy red, no cadmiums really, sorry I can't answer better, I don't really think alot about the colours I'm using, more about the colour that's being made and whether it needs more violet or blue or red or yellow, cooler warmer, etc. Thanks for the comment about composition, that's something I don't have alot of experience with, I've been reading and trying to study it on my own, so hopefully I'll be able to integrate it more and arrange the paintings better.
Art_addict: Hey, thanks for finding your way into my sketchbook, it seems we just missed eachother last year in New Mexico, you were painting Raven in the spot I was in just before I left class. About your question, the digital painting with the back is more from imagination/ memory, I didn't actually look back at that drawing of Raven while I did the digital piece, it was drawn over a year ago, but I find that with every long drawing (or painting) I've done helps me when I'm working without a reference. It is curious to me though, if I'm not using reference, how much is really invented and how much pulled from the reservior of memory. Anyway, thanks for looking.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been working on several traditional pieces lately, not too much digital, but I bounce back and forth which I like. Hello David,

Yes, it seems we just missed each other. I was only visiting for a week. Shame, I would have liked to paint alongside you.
Painting out of your imagination like that is really impressive.. do you feel it takes the same amount of focus, conceptualizing the form in your mind, compared to doing it from life or more so? I think of that as something very intimidating, personally.
In general, I like your color sensitivity, I spot an Assael influence there as well... and your drawing and paint handling is quite nice. However, I think you could push your sense of form, identifying the smaller shapes more and make them integrated into the whole figure, even when painting in a more loosely manner.
2 weeks ago I went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam together with Toby and Mercia and we stood in awe in front of a later self-portrait of Rembrandt. The paint surface was quite rough as is often the case in his later work, but it's handling, contrary to what most people see or believe, was not. All tiny subforms wedged into one another, packed onto larger parent forms, and everything was stitched together in a very controlled, logical way. Everything was beautifully structured with immense attention to the tiniest forms. Imo, it seems even though at first glance they appear to be painted quite roughly, his decisions and brushstrokes are as refined and controlled as in more smoother work. It was stunning! I think that is something that could push your work to another level as well.

I very much enjoy looking at your work and will keep an eye on this sketchbook!

Art_addict: Yeah, I'm sorry we missed one another too, I'd like to hear your opinion on how Tony's teaching compares to Ted's and Tim and Michelle's, I've been thinking of trying to get into a class with one of them...I feel mostly when I'm rendering out a figure it's more from memory than imagination, the imagination part is more for the initial gesture, which is usually a mess of lines of that are meant to really get a feeling of a pose, so I guess I kind of just go by instinct...but if it's a strong enough initial sketch then laying in the details is just a matter of drawing on everything I learned from Tony and working from life...Hope that helps answer your question a bit---thanks for the advice about sub forming too, that underlying structure is definitely something I'd like to keep in tact, I really appreciate you mentioning that.

Oh wow, that last batch was absolutely fantastic. The one with the electrified head and some of those life paintings were just absolutely tear bustingly beautifull. PLease please please never stop

Yep, about time for a visit. And wow. BAM! Glorious scintillating painting in post 66! Who are/were your mentors? Anyway, your paintings are a joy to behold! Aah, the conceptual stuff has blown me away. You're treading a path I so very much want to explore just as you are doing with some incredible results. Colorwise and theme...Wow! As Art Addict mentioned, flavors of Assael, tho your work has it's own very strong voice.
