It's strange blacky I can't name a single classical painter that is female,
its good to see the art scene these days is not just a boys club.

Define Classical..... Ive studied it, and its true there are very few. Although I suspect that there are some really fine anonymous works out there by women, and that if you look in other areas of craftmanship you would find equal skill.

    Artemesia Gentilischi
though Im not sure she qualifies as great

    Sofonisba Anguissola

    Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun (french romantic)

    Mary Cassat

    Berthe Marisot

    Käthe Kolowitz

    Frida Kahlo

    Artemisia Gentileschi

Who did one of the best versions of Judith Beheading Holofernes.

Sadly classical painting was until relatively recently a male preserve, for which there are plenty of 'cultural' reasons...

This link has a good selection of women artists:

Interesting choice MarkSD, can't say I agree with all of them but it's a personal thing anyway.

EDIT: Chaosrocks - I completely agree about Frida Kahlo. I love her work.

Why are you including other art movements in this?

Did you just mean "classical" paintings, which is a definitive movement and style... or do you mean "classic" sort of like "the '57 chevy is a classic car".

    I'm a little confused.

Ya I don't know how they figure René Magritte as "classical", thats about as modern as modern art gets.

Remember, this is just one person's preference. These particular works could be the ones that most inspire him. I doubt this was intended to be a definitive list.

maybe it's easier to satisfy everybody when you make a list of 10 artists for every major art movement.
Because you're giving to much credit to particular artists.
for example Breugel was great but he doesn't deserve 3 paintings in the top 50 while i don't see an Auguste Rodin sculpture,a Manet, a Mucha,a Picasso

    btw
Berthe Morisot & Mary Cassatt were a great female impressionist.

Keep up the good work though it's always nice to see a bunch of great paintings together.

    50 Greatest Works of Art

Lol - Well I seem to have generated a good few responses here so think that maybe I should clarify a couple of things

    1. First of all this is just a list of my personnal favourites, but I would like it to be more reflective of what fans of classical art generally appreciate, which is basically why I asked for peoples opinions on the list.

    2. You guys are definately right on a couple of points... I have no female artists in there and no non-europeans.... The list is going to be expanded to 100 soon though so when I choose my next entries, I will be sure to keep these points in mind

He should include in his list of personal preferences female artists and non-Europeans even if they are not favorite? hehe. that's funny...

i have no qualms with the list. They are your choices and you have your own reasoning.
The only thing i think you should do is add in why you think these are the 50 greatest. Personaly i dont agree with most of them and i would like to know why you think they are.

    Thanks For your comments

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all of your comments on my list. I'm now going to start working on adding another 50 works of art to the list. I will certainly take all of your comments into consideration when I put the list together.

Regarding the PC back and forth here on the inclusion of women in the list, realize that highly trained female painters were very very rare for hundreds of years. There are a few, but it was almost exclusively a boys club. I understand that women of the upper class were encouraged to learn some basic drawing and painting as part of their social education, but to go beyond a casual interest was not considered becoming of a lady. It's possible that of the relative handful of female painters throughout history, they just aren't in his top 50.

    its true...sad but true

and when you pick your personal favorites you always have to leave open the possibility that you willlfind a new favorite tomorrow
maybe he doesn''t include Kathe kolowitz now... but he might if he explores her work and discovers how totally cool it is

am I the one who thinks impressionism sucks? I don't understand the appeal. Looks like fingerpaint to me. And I don't get those old, old renaissance paintings where the perspective is all off and everyone has huge foreheads and buggy eyes. They look fugly to me.

    Just my personal opinion.

I'm surprised you picked Sleeping Gypsy out of all of Rousseau's works, especially considering his famous jungle paintings.

Anyone remember that one with the tiger in it? Yeah, now that was a kick-ass painting right there.

A task thats getting tougher by the minute, but if I keep growing the list - Up to 60 now plus a new section of the greatest sculptures, then I might get there in the end.
