    P.O.W.! Challenge 22--The Winner...EXTENDED

    P.O.W.! Challenge 22
Deadline: Sunday, April 19, 2009, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

    Topic: The Winner...

Again, something obvious as a title, but I think there's a lot of playing room here. You have the concept of winning covering a lot of possibilities, including racing, fighting, intellectual pursuits, love, and just plain old raw chance and gambling. It's wide open. You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a tentative maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts

    Standard Comic Book Size:

    --Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
    --Live art area: 6" x 9"
    --Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.

    Good luck.

Had to extend the Challenge for medical reasons. Sorry. See my last post in the thread.

P.O.W.! Challenge 23 will be posted before Sunday Midnight, April 19, 2009.

    ************************************************** ***

A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...thankyewthankyewthankyew...

Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

Open the dictionary at random and point to various spots maybe ten times. Then write each word you hit down in a list and see if you can make sense of some of them in context...

I don't have to do that because I was hit in the head a lot in my pitiful life...

Angry bear fight of the century!

I think I'll be doing something happy colourful and childish since all of my entries have been dark so far. But the idea I have is way too similiar to a certain Pixar short. :/

Of Course! How the hell can you do a decent comic without a fight...and lots of nudity and sex and watermelons and peanut butter...and a Studebaker transmission?

    Thumbnails and text!

Running isn't really the best event to portray in comics, however, with a theme like this I couldn't resist!

Here are my thumb nails with the text to get a basic composition down. This will be my first attempt at doing a POW with Painter (and its been too long since I last submitted some work here). I could use some good beatings..eh..err.. constructive critiques!

Well, here's what I've got so far.

If I'd done this at it's original length, I think it probably would have been another 10 pages, but turns out it was mostly unnecessary detail.

I was trying to do some creative foreshortening on the second page, first panel.. Pretty sure I screwed it up a bit, but that'll be fixed as I go along.

Mainly was wondering if the concept was clear or not.

The (likely illegible and henceforth edited) text is as follows:

"The race is long since won. And yet here I am stepping over my fallen comrades.
I must say, I hope you're enjoying your fifteen minutes of fame... For all the death it brought.
After all, victory isn't set in stone until all the survivors are in."

    Oh boy, WIPs!
I haven't started on my entry at all, so I'm thinking about sitting out this round... Then again I swore I'd enter at least 10 before stopping, so maybe not. *MENTAL ANGUISH*

Sudsy Haha I was going to do a race too! It looks good so far with all the changing angles, I only have one critique at the moment. On the first page you have him facing left, but then you flip him to the right on the second, and then left again for the third. It's a bit jarring for the reader, and typically (and especially in this case since it's a race) characters face one direction in order to keep the flow fluid. So it would be like the reader's eyes are "following" him run to his goal as opposed to he's going back and forth and not getting anywhere. HMM Sorry... I'm not very good at explaining things, wish I could be a bit more clear.

Onyx Hooray for creative foreshortening! Cool looking character and concept. I'm pretty sure I understand it haha, are you going to clean it up more or ink from here?

Sorry to say, but I have to skip this one after all: I had a lot of work backed up after the move and this comic had to take the back seat

Good job on the WIPs, so far!

I don't know whether this will help or not, but i have to extend the challenge a week for medical reasons.

I have a three or four day problem facing me--a large brace in my upper jaw tore loose and caused some real damage (nothing life threatening, but uncomfortable as hell and I'm worried about potential infection) so I may have to undergo some very very minor surgery on Monday or Tuesday, which means I won't have access for a few days.

I didn't want to end the challenge in the middle of the week again, so let's just extend it to the next Sunday, April 19th. Sorry for the delay and any problems that causes anyone.

So I think I'm pretty much done. Unless I post a different version, this is my final set.

I'm sure a few things need tweaking though, just can't see them right now... Too used to what's been on the screen.

I hope everything goes ok and you return to us in good health! I'm not happy to hear you're having problems, although I'm a little glad I'll have a week to get mine put together. Inspiration struck me randomly the other day and I wrote the 'script' for a short comic, unfortunately I knew there wasn't a chance in hell I'd get it done in a day, (especially since I've never done one before). So a cheers to your good health, and here's hoping I can crank this out!

Eheheh...Well I gave it a shot. I hope that my concept is at least mildly undestandable. I have much to improve on, but I think I will leave it at this for now.

    Good luck with the surgery!

eekolite and Onyx, thank you for saving our pride this turn. Sorry to say I haven't been able to finish mine either because I finally just went off some really stiff pain killers last night. Everything's fine now, and I 'm back.

I'll post our poll this evening, as well as a new Challenge.

Thank you all for the attempts, and a special thank you to the two who came through.
