thanks a lot, guys.
as usual, i have a bunch of stuff to post and no time to post it. BUT, there are some things on the way from the school. stay tuned.
here's an illustration (which will apparently never end) and a study. i put together a schedule for myself cause i've been treading water ;p
oh, and my nibs.

The last piece looks interesting. Hey your grayscale value looks good for the second piece. ;P
Keep improving dude gogogogo. Hope everything is going good at the CA ateliers.
Your values have improved a lot, the scene with the big monster-thing with the horns looks great. I have one crit though, the guy the the monster-thing is looking at, seems the have some proportion issues. His legs looks a lot bigger then this upper body and his head looks quite tiny in comparison.
Anyways, looking forward to your next update![]()
Study is looking good so far. Check the shape of her lower jaw right before it meets her chin. It's looking too concave in your drawing. Also, don't forget all the red in the nose and cheeks!

captain yeng: thanks!
fumble: indeed he does. i'm actually going to move him around a bit before the final, so i'll keep that in mind. thanks!
caco: i probably won't revisit that study, since i'm not going to spend more than an hour or two on any of them. i will definitely keep those critiques in mind for the next one, though. thanks!
todays study. clearly not finished (or correct in general), but i don't have any more time to put in ;p
these are my first attempts at painting in color from scratch, using the HSB dialogue and not color sampling/using adjustment layers/etc. definitely helpful for me at this stage.

Wow! The giant is amazing! Nice feeling
For your color stuff I think you should try a study with more saturated colors. The 2 above look a bit dull in some parts I think. (in the castle piece for example I would say that the sky is too saturated vs the castle and grass too dull)
Nice stuff, hope to see more soon![]()
Hey, looking good.A few things to keep in mind for next time...
- The whole image is cooler than the photo, which really changes the mood.
- The central structure with the flag on it seems a bit too tall in your sketch.
- I'm not 100% positive, but I think the left side of the keep should be a bit lighter in value.

eiki, caco: yep, both right. i blocked in the castle image to light/cool with the intention to fix it before starting the details. which, clearly, i didnt
i wanted to really push the greens, but ran out of time. next time, hopefully.
bit off more than i could chew with this guy. i ended up getting an OK likeness, but there is definitely more wrong than right with him. i have a lot to learn about color temperature, interaction, saturation, etc. it looked much worse before the other atelier kiddies helped me out.

What's up dude ! You're improving by leaps and bounds ! Keep it up ! i like your stuff![]()
Just a thought: might it have helped you with this last one to use grey or another neutral tone in the background, rather than white?

Wali- thank ya
Caco- as of a few months ago, some kind of neutral tone definitely would have made a difference. after cast drawing, though, it isn't as much of a factor. i also chose white as part of the exercise. dark skin tones against white/lightvalues are a real problem for me.
more of these guys on the way. i've got a bunch of rejected thumbnails and i want to paint a few more of them up.

sweeeet updates josh!
zomg see you soon! get your nail polish kit ready, and your hair braiding skiiillzzz
I agree that some folks are godlike in rendering the any picture but when it comes to lineart is a whole different story.
Btw your lineart piece looks cool. Did you render it out in pencil first since I notice some scribbles in the shadow?
yep. i do a lot of stuff straight into photoshop, but that guy was penciled, as shown last below.
quickie finals for a alternate portfolio in which i plan to grovel for casual game cash ;P

ok i wrote you a PM but it didnt appear on sent item list ;D soo...i wanted to ask you if you could show me your portfolio when you applyed to the Conceptart.org atelier???![]()
that piece from #177 is realy one of your best. nice improvement!
(I like the linework more then the shaded one)
Epic: hey, i got your PM but haven't had a chance to respond yet. I will, though!
Kristo: thanks! hopefully this post will change your mind
current progress on the illustration for mike bierek's class (with much help from lake, zach, etc) and an old concept that i colored up for no real reason.

Wow amazing work, photo studies are great, I think they look much better than the original photos, especially the woman with camera. This monster illustration is epic too, sublime lighting and coloursAlso, nothing wrong with going back and finishing old work, it's a very satisfying pastime! Something I'll try also when I'm good enough^^
Keep it up!!
Lovely giant!
I have always been a sucker for the huge but contemplative feel
yes, better than the originals, wait what? Werewolves look cool colored out man.
You're an artist, not a meat camera. -Elwell

hey sourgasm, i just went through every page of your sketchbook and my mouth was to the floor at your work and progress. Its awesome to see what the human mind is capable of doing. I hope to improve as well. Great work.
alex, jedi, dan - thanks guys!
ol blue- YER MUH BOY, BLUE
matt- ever changing, anymore. next up is oils. eeeeek.
some visual development stuff for a new illustration. this particular process is entirely new to me, so I thought I'd share my humiliation with the interweb at large. enjoy ;P
rough concept for main character
cartoony initial version
i got the idea that he would use a canopy of trees as his web, flinging himself around by wing-like spider legs.
initial thumbnails
rough value study for tentative composition. i rarely spend more than 15 or 20 minutes on these- since everything will change a few more times. even the main character changed already ;P
-: [ sketchbook | sour.org ] :-
Oh I like the latest update! That composition looks very nice so far, glad you picked the top angle, its much more dramatic than the other ones (although I like the first one too) More!!
Cool work man :] Keep it coming !
i've really been enjoying you explore your illustration. Especially the concepts for the spider. I can so easy see your rendition of ms. muffet as a dreamworks animation or something of the like. as always, great work. see you in a few hours jeezy.
indeed, a few long, torturous hours. maybe i'll wander down the road and gaze up at your window. maybe you'll happen to look down and catch me in that moment.
it would look something like this:
