Hey you, those space zombies are awesome, and the little "Caution ; Parasitic Undead" sign is hilarious.

    keep it up!

    thanks guys ;]

i totally forgot to post my final cast painting, so here it is. oil on board some inches by some inches (i forget). i found it totally impossible to capture the value range in photo, so this is as close as i could get. i'll try again in a different lighting setup. i promise it looks better than that !

also attached some env setup speed paintings to reign in a new illustration, a crappy fantasy speed paint that looks all anal and a few sketches. i never, ever sketch to this level anymore (always just detail-less thumbs), so it was a pretty interesting little adventure.

    hope you diigggz

I second the above statement, and the colored enviro aint no joke either. Spacerape blue zombies are looking lovely, I'm digging the transformations, a lot. I'm not the expert here, but on the final image, is his cranium expanding? Not sure if we'd see those sideplanes like that if not with the head thrown back like that. Cheers!

hey guys. to answer about the oil painting, a looong time. i was working on it for 3 hours every morning at the school. i probably spent like 75 - 85 hours on that guy. granted, i was dissatisfied with the face and ended up repainting about 50% of it. also, i don't have any oil painting experience, so even the simplest of tasks was often a week long process for me. learned a lot, though.

sorry for the complete lack of updates for a month or so now. after the school got pulled out from under us, i dove into freelance and managed to get enough of it that i have no time for personal stuff. i have some pretty ambitious projects going in my (extremely lacking) spare time, but everything i'm doing in general is still under NDA. laaaame. i'll have new stuff soon, hopefully.

attached a 1.5 hour speed painting of a soon-to-be-fuckered tundra elf, most of which was on the phone with my mom heh. tried to stay zoomed out and used low-res + huge brushes. i've got more of those sitting around the hard drive that i'll upload later.

Oh man, your environments are so utterly delightful! Jumping from the first page to this last page shows a lot of improvement. You have a really great sketching style, I love it! Great job on the values in the cast painting as well. It looks very much like a photograph.

Thomas: it definitely can be a great learning process. It really depends on how you think about things, of course. I didn't learn to use contrast to convey shapes quickly, but I did learn to sit down and really figure out how angle and intensity of light can explain the subtlies of form. That just applies to this particular study, though.

Metal Fingers: The ConceptArt.Org Atelier is no more. The whole explanation would take a few boring pages. If you want the Atelier experience with Carl Dobsky and a few of the Massive Black guys, you want this: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3473

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've had a pretty crazy month. The dust has cleared now, and it looks like next month I'll be starting full time as a lead concept artist. I'll be painting crazies, creatures, monsters and desolated cityscapes day-in and day-out. I can't say anything about the project itself, but its pretty much my dream position

I can't show the work I'm really excited about due to NDA, but here are some little heres and theres. I'm trying to work in a different style with nearly every freelance piece I take on. Finding out what works, discarding what doesn't.

    e-novel character illustration

card illustrations. not happy with either painting, but i learned a lot about how to work crazy fast.

zombie guys just for more style practice. i jumped in with no pressure sensitivity and straight to color,
then cut myself off at half an hour in. i may pick up grandpa again, though. he's supposed to have a walker ;p

geez I haven't been around since ages, your improvement is nice to follow! but I'd say be more patient with your work, your studies look really gorgeous and so should everyone of your personal paintings but I really dig the pencil character, the values and mood of the e-novel illustration!!

no time for love, dr jones!

i feel like at this stage in the game, i need to concentrate on rapid ideation more than creating a polished piece of art. i spent hundreds of hours doing month long studies for over a year straight and, thanks to that, i'm pretty confident in my ability to take things to final. that said, i'm staring down about 11 months of time to create all the characters, creatures, environments and assets for a fairly large game. polish shmolish, you know?

quick doodle while watching tv with the girlfriend. may finish it later.
