Trying to do a master copy today, The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio. Colors, values, shapes are off but....let's see if I can get this finished :/

my main critique from the study is that you've lost the contrast. the heavy-handed atmosphere in Caravagio's work is just crazy. yours has a very evenly lit feeling. you'll lose the lesson of it, but throw a soft light layer on top and hit the areas in cast shadow and the bg with a big fuzzy round using black or any warmish near black. adjust opacity to taste and then turn the layer on and off to see the difference.

good work, though. now do it in oil if you really want to learn a lesson or two ;]

Thanks a ton Sourgasm, it really made a ton of difference to my eyes. I was thinking "Why are these colors so off" but it was the contrast that was a huge problem. I still lost the similarity, but now I see the huge gap in value in the actual painting. Though this seems off still viewing online.

I don't think doing it in PS is that helpful, but oils are really expensive here ( plus I've never painted in oil ) so it's better than nothing.

This master study is coming along really nicely. In addition to what sourgasm said about the contrast, I think there are a few drawing errors - particularly in the faces - that make things seem a bit off. I'm being kinda picky with that crit simply because I have something to compare it to...I may not have noticed other wise. In specific:
-The shape/size of Jesus' nose and cranium are off - both too big
-St Thomas's chin is a bit too big and his neck is too straight.
-The dark-haired man in back needs a wider sideburn, which will solve the side of his face looking too wide. He also needs stronger cheek definition.
-All the characters could stand to have the values in their faces actually tightened a bit, mostly in the mid tones of the shadowed side of their faces.

Is there a reason you re-composed the painting? I feel like the crop throws off the compositional balance because your version puts Thomas' face right smack dab in the middle of the picture and since it's both highly detailed and the strongest facial expression, our eyes are getting locked there.

Like I said earlier, this is a tough critique..but only because I think this has great promise! Keep working on it, it'll be damn good by the time you're done with it!

Thanks for the crit Brinkman! The crop was in because the highest res reference photo I found was itself cropped, so I didn't want to guesstimate from a lower res image, then I said what the hell and did it anyway. Hopefully I fixed the errors. Probably going to leave this as is for now and say it's ok.

The landscapes are great. I'd like to see where you take this, bring in some of your own elements perhaps?

For some reason I worked a week on the first version of this week's CHOW, grew frustrated, then trashed it. Then I felt better doing the second one the night before it was due.

wow what a funny story!, yep that was one of the ones I voted for too, You know Dermot power says that the best of his own work is the stuff he just rips through because
thats when he is really loving doing it.
