I think this is a great exercise to do every day I want to do many expressions with different lighting effects..hope my face doesn't scare you too much :]

Wow..I worked a long time on the portrait this time but I ended up scrapping it and returning to more comfortable area in my drawing ability..I promise tomorrow I'll push it to the uncomfortable zone again

I like em! These two latest ones seem to lack the definition the first one had though, you might wanna set up a lamp or something so you get stronger shadows so that the shapes of the face gets easier to recognize.

And ye you should definitely leave your comfort zone (me too for that matter...), keep it up! ^_^

Ok I took your advice, Imaginary, and I made the sketch while facing the window and sun and then once looking away from. I sure went out of my comfort zone with this and it shows.. my shading is really off and I worked so long trying to get it to look right , is not as easy as I thought :<

Great start to you thread! Your self portraits have alot of character to them, which is great. Try and push yourself a little out of your comfort zone, as It will really help you understand which areas you need to focus on. Great work so far though, Keep it up

Ok, this is really out of my comfort zone..
1. Its in tonal values and I've never done one before..

3. I used Gouache in Painter instead of my comfort tool, conte.

Oh ya, and I sorta cheated, I looked at a photo of myself from a wedding I went to last month because I couldn't stand how I look tonight

That's a huge improvement from the first posts! Only crit i have is that it might be a bit too dark, it's great for being your first try though.

Ah and your leaving your comfort zone, awesome! ^_^

the one based off a photo is stronger than the rest, as far as structure goes. remember to be aware of your skull, it'll help with finding the jaw line, size of the eye that fits into the eye socket, etc. remember, you can feel your own face and find this stuff, you can't really do that with anybody else. (i guess you could, but not without being strange? oh well)
the under-structure is the hardest thing to get right when you start out, most artists rush it.
nice to see you focus on the eyes, something i don't do when i do mine.
check out sargent's drawings, he can get a lot with a little, something i think may be of interest if your going to do these every day. (and he uses charcoal, heh)
great stuff, keep it up.

When i looked at the tonal study I did I was so upset and imaginary was right...SO DARK..I had to do another one with Painter this time without a photo, because I really felt like a cheater. I made this funny face in the mirror and started over. This took about an hour or so. It could use some more work since my nose doesn't look right but I'm good with it for now.

Thanks for all the tips virus I did that with this one, I have a really weird skull , I definitely am going to sketch my self portrait as a skeleton sometime.

I did some charcoal studies and referenced sargent, and wow, it helped so much. I'll scan them to my sketchbook later. I really feel an improvement already. I'm happy

My new set of daily SP's

I feel a great improvement because every time I finish something I think it's great then when I look at it the next day I think it looks BAD. So I guess I'm going to hate these tomorrow but I like them for now.

I promised I'd do one with markers with a comic book feel to it so there are two since the first try is a big fail.

These are some fun self portraits, nice to see all the expressions in them- those are really, really hard to do. That last pencil one, while not as 'finished' as some others, is probably the best of the bunch- you seem very aware of the structure of the head in it, no drifting eyes or anything, and there's very little more important in drawing a head than construction. Can't wait to see the next one!

I really love the contrast on SP8, It's very striking. 9 is great as well. The only thing I could suggest with your pencils is try to use a small range, so you can push your values a little more

A quick Charcoal for today, I'll put some effort into tomorrow but this is still a first for me to try blending the dark of the hair right into the face...did it work?

don't be afraid to blend and erase out the whites as well. i think the grace of charcoal comes from the ability to mess with it after you make the mark on the paper...
nice dark vs light play going on. good stuff. =)

Thanks for dropping by my thread and giving advice I really appreciate it.
A tip for the next self portrait or observation drawing in general, really focus on your face see how everything goes together, how lines curve etc. Its amazing what actually really focusing consciously can do to your drawings. If your not doing that already .

I like the last one, I think I'll try charcoal too like #8 too. I kinda dont feel like giving advices or critics today, just keep it up daily and youll improve in notime. Good luck

You charcoal one is lovely Great job. Did you use Willow or Compressed? I tend to use a mixture myself and obviously use the compressed for the more defined strokes i want placed down. I will have to do a charcoal one, I;m not sure if I have one posted yet.

Karein I used a compressed one but did very lightly, I have a lot more charcoal studies I need to scan to show you.

Okay I'm really excited about my SP's today. I really feel a HUGE improvement with my hand-eye coordination and observation skills. I wanted to test that feeling by drawing my SP's entirely without guidelines and in one go with INK so theres no room for mistakes. Sure, I made some mistakes anyhow but I think it came out pretty good overall. These ones almost look like me too. Haha. I'm so scary

You do look battered in today's portrait, but it adds to the variety in your collection.

Todays sp, got it over with first today, I promised I would do one in full color digital, this was done on Painter and I used Gouache and the blender tool, I probably could have mixed in more red tones but I got tired...and I realized how much it didn't look like me so I'll make a better one tomorrow starting off right

I still did my best with this , even though it doesnt look it.

It's the best I can do for now..

I love the character in your self portraits so far, you've been doing a good job of regularly mixing it up with color, expression and lighting. I can definitely learn a lesson from you in that regard! The digital works are coming along, it seems like you're getting a more solid likeness each time. This last one looks like you went a little too yellow in the overall scheme of things. As you said, you need some red, but don't let yourself get too into the greens and yellows either. Keep pushing! Lovely thread so far!
