Hello all,


i m a software engineer that has drawing as a hobby. I usually draw to relax,
but latelly i was thinking about improving my drawings. I got a lot of books and i hope i have improved some

I usually use paper and pencil , but sometimes i venture and use ink

C&C welcome ( but please be gentle with a nerd ) )

Here are a few characters i had in mind for a long time :

if I were you I would: chill out my shading a little bit, work in 3/4 for heads, think about the nose more as an extrusion from the face. Think about what your lines are telling us. Also you have a tendency to pull your cheekbones out too much. Think more about the overall value structure when you are drawing a face as opposed to localised ones and I think your cheekbones will start looking a little more natural. Those eyes are huge, which is fine... but your making more work for yourself if you want to make a convincing value structured face, made from flesh as a study:do that. If you want to make a stylized pic, do that instead. Going inbetween has a tendency to look a bit strange. That life drawing is pretty nice, if of neutral gender.

thank you for the advice .. i will try to make the cheekbones a little less evident... i think this happens because i think about the bone structure without thinking that there is some muscle on that. I have to stop that ...

btw... sorry if i misunderstood you , but what life drawing ? all were made from imagination ...

Nice work capturing those poses! As for faces, I'd say work on proportions more. What books have you gotten? I'd suggest a few books by George Bridgman like Constructive Anatomy, Bridgman's Life Drawings, and the Book of a Hundred Hands. Loomis is good too, though I can't suggest any particular books since I haven't used any by him.

for drawing faces i m using Loomis and Burne Hogarth. for hands i also got Hogarth's Drawing Dynamic Hands.

Just last weekend i got bridgman s anatomy and life drawing, although i didn get a chance to draw anything from them yet, just read a little

wow; that's some impressive progress you're showing, kyurai! espec on the light and the perspectives in those standing characters. that mentor thread must be awesome or something! keep at it!

These are pretty good if they are from imagination You have done well so far, but I think you should focus a little more on the structures and propertions of the face at the moment. You are doing well at the moment, make sure you study those books, and keep the works coming

By the way, Life Drawing is when you use a Live model for reference, not a photo

in the mentoring thread, Leanne and i , got a cool ideea: make something feminine look badass. So i chose to make an early century girl with a biker tatoo )

after that i thought about this a little more and came to this conclusion: what about the other way arround ? make something that is supposed to be rough and mean into something feminine and graceful. My take on this is a punk chick balerina... hope i get to finish it

anyway, here s the girl with the tatoo

these were inspired by CHOW: Envoy of the Khemethar. He s supposed to be amused by what he finds on the planet and she feels sorry for the poor, tech challenged people )

my second try with acrylics... getting used to them atm gonna get new brushes this weekend yeeei !

@leanne : thanks... i love charcoals. i think there s something quite nice in trying not to smear it all over my clothes everytime )

@icedearth: thank you for the encoregment i m just getting used to using paints. i never did this before, so if you have any useful advice it will be more than welcome

two more tries with acrylics... took about 1.5 episodes of star trek to make them maybe i should give it a try and paint picard ? )

Can you see it? you have a repeating pattern at most of your portraits.

Tipa, can you please detail a little ? if you mean that i draw the same faces all over again , yeah you re right. these are some of the characters from a personal project and i thought it was good practice to draw them until i get do them just like they look in my head.

Interesting characters and studies mate. If I were you I'd do more figure drawings and I would recomend doing more stuff from life, even though this is an imagination sketchbook!

If you draw the same character so fine, no pattern

I'd suggest you go look again at the face proportions rules in my class's thread, you have some mistakes that make the portraits look unreal. (maybe it's by purpose?)

Also, maybe try to add water to the acrylic, don't draw so dry. Explore the options of wetness and it's values.
Try to make more layers, even though it's acrylic, you need to try out all of it's possibilities to make the most from the color.
You can also try to put Gesso on the paper before you draw, explore that option too.
