Clothed Figure Painting with James Kei - Available Now!!

Another insightful video from James... hope you guys enjoy it!

James continues his figure painting series with a clothed model this time around. The video begins with a bit of real life character design as James picks out a costume and accessories. He then takes a loose gesture through several stages of refinement until the painting reaches the level of polish necessary for this study. Throughout his painting James reveals insightful tidibts of information gleaned from years of work and study. We've also included 30 minutes of unedited footage so that the viewer can see the actual pace and rhythm with which he places his strokes.

    50 minutes. 1280 x 760.

I'm disappointed. I thought James would have gotten the guy in his avatar in clothes and painted him

Seriously though interesting, one of these I'll have to get sometime. I noticed his workspace changed from his last one and there's a color wheel.

    Hey guys. It's finally done.
I had a great time dressing up a model to my specifications, or in other words designing a character. You really absorb how to create a character from scratch simply by watching a model put on various buckles and belts. It can be applied to give a fictional character more believability.
I learned a lot, and I hope you guys learn something too.

If you have any questions in relation to the download. Techniques, settings, etc.... please feel free to ask them in this thread and I'll try my best to answer them.

    Thx.

    Hi James,

Thanks for taking the time and doing these videos. I really like the approach you take on the clothed figure and your tips about designing the shadow shapes will definitely help me in my studies and with some of the problem I've been encountering on my own pieces.

I really liked how you blended some of the edges on her left arm and hip.

The only thing I would say I missed that I really liked on your previous video was the smaller window with the model. I find it helpful to check the model and to see where you are heading.

Nonetheless another great download!! Thanks again James and Aaron.

Havent had a chance to buy this yet. Saw that the colourwheel could be found elsewhere. Was just wondering since I saw some tools there- those in the download or not?
I saw chalks and some others and was just wondering how you have set up for those "natural" types of brushes, or just anything that can mimic a traditional media (yes, I create my own brushes, but other people can sometimes innovate and thus it is a great basis to have other peoples brushes )

btw, Im getting this one as soon as payday comes (wednesday), regardless of tools or not, but still would be interested in them

oh, and thanks for the high-def refference of the model

There were no tools included in the download, but the video itself is worth the money, i also loved that this video was in widescreen format. With the other massive black dvds when i watch them fullscreen u get black on the sides and it just annoys me ^^. Also nice work on the green screen, usually u guys just have a full square window with the artist talking, it was a nice change to have your image cut out .

this looks beautiful! just downloading thanks james (again) and everyone involved!

i saw those other quick figure paintings you posted in the other section. guys you so should photgraph your models and publish sets as reference material to study and paint from to supplement the vids!
it would be great to do this from life but there is no way to get models (with costumes like that!) for a whole bunch of people i guess. without alienating all your friends by making them stand around in funny cloth too often that is.

    keep em coming!

James I'm a little confused about something. You state early on that you start the document at like 2000 pixels? Does that mean like 1250 pixels tall by like 750pixels wide? Oh and you rock.

    Studio Colrouphobia:
For the most part, I'm using Whit's brush set. There will be no tools included in this download.

    ManaBurn:
    2000 pixels X 1600 pixels.

    Rist:
The 30 minute unedited footage is a separate file from the tutorial. So you get 2 video files.

Do we get a blooper reel? I dunno, I just find it more humanizing and entertaining seeing you guys mess up. Just reminds us all that many that produce great art are just really humans

This tutorial was very insightful I have to say James and his model, I think her name is Chloe, did a fantastic job incorporating both the idea of a clothed figure exercise and a completed character design. So in other words I feel as though I got a two for one in this download because Chloe and with the result of James finished work looks like a bad ass character. So great planning on James part.

Other things worth mentioning is one, James has great presentation, everything he says is presented very clearly and directly and are things that many artists especially myself overlook.

For example I really appreciated him going into detail about designing shadow shapes and the rhythms of of highlights things I never really think about.
Wes has been beating this stuff into my head for over a year now and I have still not completely grasped the concepts.
Overall A great Download! I know I will be watching this one many times over. Great work James!

You hit us again with another one!

Hey James, just watched the download, very inspiring first off. Watching your process is a great help, in addition, listening to the tips/advice and problem solving destroys most art classrooms I've experienced.

What was really great to hear was your insight on simplifying forms into shapes when painting from a model or using reference. It was something I believe I been intuitively doing, but hearing and seeing you implement this has solidified this process into my head further. Another reason why this a positive why of working especially when using reference is sometimes the complexities of the reference are to much to internalize and use from memory (Wes has done a great job of beating this into Mine and Aaron's head).

Another great lesson was brush stroke to purpose ratio, every brush stroke should have a purpose, this maximizes the efficiency and work flow. (I should be using quotes here from James).
I could go on and on, this download was really great from both the demonstration and theory/philosophy perspective of the artist. I would recommend anyone who is interested in character design or studies from life should invest in this download. Its simply priceless.

Thanks again James for another one

Thank you for clarifying that James.

I noticed Kei is using some whit brushes that were included in Whit's speed painting tutorials. The F flat brush at least. The chalk brush is brought out later when he's doing some work on the sweater and stuff.

As far as I can tell from rapid pausing, he's using a round tip brush set to air flow 60 percent opacity 100. Pressure sensitivity to control flow and opacity on. And pressure to control size on. I think he set his minimum diameter to somewhere around 25% on the last one. He sets the levels on that early on and I didn't rewind back to check yet.

    Hey James,

I'd bought your tutorial earlier, not realizing it'd came out today; really phenomenal~! I, personally learned a lot from it, and from your first figure painting tutorial. I like how you improvised and drew out her character to look out to the viewer; I can see what you mean by forming a connection with the audience. Hope to see you soon in Dallas! Thanks again, and take care~

    Sincerely,
    -Slade

Thanks a lot James! Excellent video. I wish I knew what you were doing when you switch between the brushes and the eye dropper. I'm brand new to digital painting and really, color theory in general. This was an excellent video that really inspired and encouraged me. Another thing I didn't realize is how impatient I really am with my art (considering this was a 4 hour painting).

    Thanks again, James.

Aaron, just thought id let you know; the buy this link on the massive dvd page adds a digital painting figure download (James' first video) to the cart instead of this one... so we ended up buying both which is cool by me, but might annoy people who already have the first one.

downloading both now, they'll be done by tomorrow

thanks in advance James and Aaron you guys rule!

I forget how cheap these are sometimes. £10 for an hours training! Usually you can be paying £40 for 2 hours with the other place (which would make it roughly £20 for equivelent).
