Hey there guys. Everyone seems to be loving this thread and some really great portraits have been coming out of it. I work pretty heavily from photo reference and recently I got a solid crit about picking some pretty poor photos to work from. It was true for sure, I had been not working from the best stuff. I also happen to think that a lot of the photos we are choosing to draw/paint from in here could be better. Photos without flashes, natural light, artificial light, maybe a combination of the two. Nothing too contrasty.

So I wanted to post a challenge to ya'll that I think would be beneficial in these terms. I took some pics and tried to recreate some of the things mentioned above.

Photo 1 - I thought this would be useful because you can see how much of the blue/violet light is being bounced off the walls of my room and onto the left side of the face, but at the same time the light coming from my desk lamp creates a very warm yellowish orange on the right side.

Photo 2 - Very cool color comp. The whole pic is in an extremely low key. Just natural light, single light source from behind me.

Photo 3 - Drew the blinds a bit, warmer colors come through. Natural light coming in over my right shoulder, a bit of warm light coming from my monitor as well. Threw an odd pose in there, uh oh a hand!

Do one, do all three, don't do any, whatever suits ya.

It's seven a.m. in Friday I'm still awake and I should have sent the raw version of my master's thesis to my professor on Thursday. So forgive me, but tim, sweetie, the last picture just made this "awwwww puppy"-reaction in me. But that was all folks. Now I lurk back to the chamber to write before I can go to bed.
