You can combine both of course, but people will tend to start with one or the other.

It's good to figure out color studies. Try to explore how a single scene might look under different light, i.e. draw the same house, from the same angle during different times of day.

My heart, it skips a beat. I've been willing myself to touch the traditional
media and do more experiments. I just find Photoshop somewhat, ummm. cheaper.

The mullets are cool, but some '80s need to stay in that era. Tom Jones for example.

Bread crumbs are the orange. Texture from olive oil. I like to clean my plate with bread.

Hey nice set of value studies here. You should really concentrate on drawing first though, if you can master drawing then your value sketches will look that much better.

Love this technique mate! Inspired me to give it a go. Lot's of fun looking for an image within an image. No idea how you manage to make your little images look natural on that plate though ( olive oil ) ??. Suppose I better have a gander at the blog. Anyhow great work!

somewhere, but they are just so hard to find. The search engine isn't powerful enough!.

I'll come back with a prequel sb. Full of all the stuff I should've been doing in the first place.
And I'll finish off the trilogy with some finished stuff sb. Hopefully out before Christmas season of 2082.

Bri Bri: Post #60 in your sb really has given me eyes. Literally. It helps hugely in specific brainstorming.
Instead of relying on pure texture & random blotches, it still helps giving clues as to what I want to be finding.
edit: How did I get it looking natural. Skill mate, skill. Hehehe. Soft round @ 10% exposure. Dodge and burn. It feels like spray painting. NO fumes. Bonus.

I strongly suggest trying a quick digital pic, or better yet, a watercolour brush stroke, from your own rhythm and flow.
Kick started in your brain, transferred into motion through your panzy wrist, through the brush and on to the canvas.
I find it really fun. It helps after each section of real life studies. (At least for me)

Squint your eyes! Looks for the big shadows. In that last portrait you seem to have gone for the details too quick. You should work on figuring out planer structure to give it a greater feel of depth.

I like the technique for the donut belly illustration. I could see it in some sort of editorial work about eating disorders or something. The one thing that bothers me is that I didn't catch on that it was a donut immediately.

I'm not even going to bother critiquing you on the typography XD

Mighty Dwardo, How are you man? The stuff is looking good. Some people say it is best to compartmentalize the various aspects of drawing and painting, but I disagree. I find that method to be exclusive and when I desire to gain knowledge, I need to be inclusive in my approach. Drawing improves painting and painting helps drawing. I strive to learn it all at the same time. Each discipline teaches me about and strengthens my knowledge of the other disciplines.

Skintones:
when you have problems with them, how about a study? Sargent? Caravaggio? try to repaint a picture.

Face color is complex, the trick is to go wild
-color zones of the face, google them.
-places that stand out are naturally more burned by the sun
-bloodvessels and skinthickness are differently distributed, bringing different colors to different places (red cheeks, cooler skintone under the eyes)

If in doubt, create some color cubes {see the beginning of Loomis’ chapter on color in Creative Illustration} to experiment with and determine what palette you will use. I find it is best to plan these things before diving into the final art.
My basic palette- 1.Titanium white 2.Cadmium Red Light 
3.Cadmium Yellow Medium 4.Yellow Ochre 
5. Burnt Sienna 
 6. Burnt Umber 
7. Ultramarine Blue. 8. Alizarin Crimson 9.Prussian blue 10.Raw sienna 11.Naples Yellow
Be aware of the main concerns, what is the hue, chroma, value and is it warm or cool?
Color occurs on the edge of light. Use the most pure colors there. The application of white does not create vivid color, use it sparingly, or it will create a chalky look to the skin tone. Halftone is the bridge between the areas of light and dark. You will find most textures occur in the areas from the edge of light to the beginning of half tone and are most vivid there.
Where bone structures come to surface despite the muscle volumes, the color is more pronounced, like toes, fingers, the face, knees or ankles.
Human skin is translucent. Translucency is especially noticeable in infants and the elderly. Pay attention to light passing through the skin of ears and finger edges.
Human skin is reflective. Clothing and surrounding objects can cast a glow onto skin, so observe your subject carefully.

GMS: I kinda wanted to put imprints on the sloshies but, I don't like the rubber/plastic diggin into my foot when it gets to that point.
I like them new, in real life or in a digital. Bad memories I guess.

Skintones... My watercolor teacher taught us a trick, which would need some translating into other media. Might be worth it.

You start out with blue! That gives the skin the cool colors which will keep it from becoming too yellow. Into that blue you mix yellow than red, and let it dry. You can then darken things by coming in with the browns.
