nice paintings overall, , the small mistakes would be concerning composition for the 4th and 6th ones, the eye has a tendency to rush on the big cliff and forget everything else, forgeting the sense of perspective( what i said is ununderstandable) and it's the same for the tractor that keeps your attention an dprevent the eye to follow the flow of painting.

hi, i like your paintings, i also like the compositions, but i think they are a bit uneasy to "read". you should decide on one object (e.g. on a portrait it is of course the person) and really make it pop out! i think each of your painting is too unified. try to use contrasts! think of warm/cool contrast (warm skin against cold background) also i really like satrated agains unsaturated, it really makes things pop! then value contrasts, color contrasts, just experiment

Nice paintings you got here, i especially like the first and the last.

I like the style and quality in them, thou i agree with the others posts in that the paintings need a stronger focus, by working with contrast or colors. Not sure what to add really. Keep painting, you have come a long way already.

edit: i might be wrong about the focus-issues since the camera might disort the real colors a bit.

heh folks, firstly thanks very much for taking the time to have a gander and reply, theres so much top notch stuff here that im glad to have piqued your interest momentarily!
feil-thank you, i think i understand you abot the cliff, definatley needs something, ye ol flock of birds maby, about the tractor, was tryin to point at it with directional lines, was more concerned with putting color into the tones of the leaves with that one, painted tractors to death before, ill defo re think it though,
Katzenminz, cheers, i guess they kinda are uneasy, theres a ghostly feel to these areas, vacated, beyond use, pretty much the state of agrigulture as a buisness round where im from, everything else you said i agree wiyh and would love the skills to acomplish, ill keep trying.
gelvin, thank you, i guess i was tryin for a kind of overall design ala tonalism, workiing from memory and photos though so extruding an redesigning lighting etc, one day ill conquer my lack of technical knowledge and training-ie confusion!, thats what this forum is for though, s, how do you know ive improved? i rarely post out of fear!
cheers to all and glad to make yer aquaintance, ill be back with more soon...

Wow - considerable jump in progress here! You've got some really strong pieces! Really like the lighting on some of these. *Lady on the bed with the remote is fantastic -- and liked the SP after that a lot!
Do you stay in Photoshop the most or do you like Painter more?

some recent pshop speed paints, all under 4 hours, messing with brushes and layer types, focusing on trying to correctly spot tone and reduce information into a kind of flat pattern, a kind of overallness to the paintings, my own digital photo ref...comments and crits welcome

    seeking advice re exhibition theme

hi folks, recently had the opportunity to propose an exhibition, I'm not from a fine art background so I'm seeking advice bout formulating a theme and seeking a mentor to guide me along the path...will post this in the mentor section too, really do need advice so d'ont hesitate to comment or crit, I'm open to all suggestions..especially from experienced fine artists, painters , designers, print artists etc

Heres what I've come up with

"Postcards from the hedge, everything I own has leads"

(perceiving what you plug in/ manipulating your nervous system.)

    Thematically..this is loose

An exhibition of digital mixed media paintings and three large scale
landscapes on the theme of transience, reflection and the role played
by electric wires, plugs and computers in the creation of the art
object. A juxtaposition of traditional landscape with a digital method
    of production.

an over view of my work would be essential since I need to tie in existent work, I'm largely self thought outside of professional animation work and am seeking to set up a print business to fund my dedication to the art path.

I'm thirty one and out of work so have all the time in the world to work hard and produce some interesting pieces..

my sketch book contains the same images, i need to improve!

    an udder elf portrait

    an udder self portrait..
hi, back again, it would be easier to get a fat man through the eye of a camel than to access the ghost of the t'interwebs around here so ill keep this brief, thanks to every body for comments and crits, most appreciated,

if your droppin by feel free to leave your two cents worth so i dont feel like a total twat being the only one postin. hmmn, got to work on my neediness.

here's a self portrait i spent about 8 hrs on one nite for a challenge i saw on this forum but was'nt satisfied to post then, spent a shit load more time on it since without the mirror or the same lighting which was a big mistake and a total waste of time, postin the first version, time to move on.

heres another sloppy painting..but i do like some of the modeling because i paid more attention than usual to bounced light and shadows in terms of revealing and defining forms, and also that it does'nt look too computer. what do you guys think?

    www.rayforkan.blogspot.com

still searchin for a mentor..could it be you who helps me take my work to the next level?

what can i do to finish this piece?

heh, so here is a portrait piece I've been working on on and off for a while now,
was workin from shitty front lit photo ref as usual and wanted to test my ability to light her from a different angle.
while i was at some stages content with the introduction of color and the rendering aspect Im bored with my attempts and the result is a boring image. could realy use some outside influence and advice, what can i do to make this work....
looking forward to hearing from you,

I love your paintings. The landscape ones have a texture and crispness that makes them very vibrant! Try using a brush pen for some of your DVD drawings, I think they would suit the way you work *subscribes*

Another Irish member! I was getting so used to there only being about 2 or 3 that I stopped looking and then about 4 or 5 more have popped up in the last few weeks... months.. whatever. Toffeeliz is right, get your hands on a brush pen if you can, they're awesome. Although you won't get one in Ireland, Amazon UK sell a variety for a decent price.

Your paintings are good, really diverse while still showing your style. Did you get that exhibition? There's a lot of stuff going down in Ireland, and although the visual artists ireland people will fill your inbox full of spam, they have some great contacts and links, worth keeping an eye on.

What else? Most of your posts are oldish now soI don't know if advice on them is any good at this stage. The "siobhansmallca" looks a bit funky - but not cos you changed the lighting angle, more because your painting lost the back of her skull so her hair starts where her brain should be - but nothing that's not fixable.

I'm subscribing to your thread & I'll be back again. I think we should start an Irish SSG, just to keep us all going. Although you're far more motivated to post than I am. Fair play!

my sketch book, searching for a mentor..maby you?
yo, time for a change of thumbnail, didnt know how to do that when i started, ooops.

Heres one I made which could not have been done without the concept art community. Its directly influenced by the amazing art, tutorials etc around here and hugely influenced by one dude in particular whose fluency with a brush leaves me speechless every time, the freekin amazin zhuzhu,

photoshop, bout 6 hours, workin with colors and what, i think, is a tertiary combo. and also his brushes.

go find his stunning work in the exclusive sketch book area.

and if you personally ever read this, thanks for being deadly.

cheers, this ones for all the gurrrls back home, who no longer look remotely like this. mores the pity.

    peace.

    portrait prep study

yo, takin a break from work to do some prepatory tonal sketch for a portrait commission.

Familiarising myself the sculpture of the model from shitty photographic ref, looking at defining plains tonally, which im not happy with yet. blurred edges versus sharp ones, composition and design flow of finished image.

face on/top down lighting for now, dont think the resemblance is there yet...
    need more practice from life.

pshop painting, one flat rough oil brush. bout 8 hrs.
will post a development sequence of this when internet allows.

comments and crits more than welcome. ray

you gotta remember the edges man. not everything in a portrait
is hard edged or chiseled out. some parts are soft, some are hard. and to know
the right amounts of this sensitivity comes with years of practice.

try doing some hardcore graphite or oil portraits and dont worry about the time
it takes to finish them. you will learn more by working in traditional than you would
in digital any day. then when you come back to digital, your traditional knowledge
will kick in and you'll know what to do. that's what i've been recently doing and it
    is so helpful.

keep up the great work and dedication! looking forward to seeing more!

    orpen study

Yo folks, great to see my old Del9 Amigos and Cartoon Saloon fiends down in a lashing rain at the Galway film festival, who won?

Heres a 3 hour detail study of a three hour study by William Orpen of Sean keating.

    Man of the West.

One rough oil brush at 100% opacity, trying to commit to a correct tonal range and order them right up to the highlight, aint got it yet but its the way to go.
(have a goo at the original, both of these guys were masters at it)
this was done from shitty internet ref, stayin the hell away from details

    hup!
